With the increasing global water scarcity,wastewater irrigation has become widespread,but it can have detrimental ecological *** wastewater contains valuable nutrients for plants,improper treatment or the use of untreated wastewater in irrigation can negatively impact soil fertility and plant *** study is divided into two parts:firstly,a phytosociological survey was conducted to identify plant species with the highest importance value index(IVI)in the vicinity of wastewaterirrigated ***,a comparative morpho-anatomical analysis was carried out to investigate the morpho-anatomical adaptations of the species with the highest IVI under wastewater irrigation compared to normal water *** results of the phytosociological survey revealed the presence of 51 plant species in the vicinity of the wastewater-irrigated areas,with varying relative densities and *** inoxia exhibited the highest IVI(28.79),followed by Xanthium strumarium(24.34),while Lippia nodiflora showed the lowest IVI(1.86).The morphological growth of *** was superior under normal water irrigation,but the average root length was greater under wastewater *** cell anatomy,cell thickness and cell area characteristics in the dermal,ground,and vascular tissues of the stem and root tended to be greater under wastewater ***,the opposite trend was observed in leaf anatomical analysis,possibly due to the combined effect of wastewater and climatic *** and root xylem thickness were greater under wastewater irrigation,whereas phloem thickness was higher under normal water *** number of vascular bundles in the stem,root,and leaf was higher under wastewater treatment compared to normal water irrigation,but their arrangement was circular in the latter and scattered under wastewater *** inoxia demonstrated strong adaptive potential under wastewater irrigation,as indicated by its highest relative d

Metal-based engineered nanomaterials (MENMs) are increasingly being used in people’s working lives. Although MENMs have important effects on soil ecosystem and play an important role in solving soil environmental problems, the hazards associated with MENMs cannot be ignored. Therefore, more and more scholars have studied the behavior and effects of nanomaterials in soils in recent years. In this review, we explore the articles on MENMs and soil ecosystem retrieved from various databases from 2013 to 2022. We discuss the mechanisms of MENM toxicity, the current state of soil ecosystem, the ecological effects of MENMs on soil microbes, earthworms, and plants, and the ways by which soil organisms take up MENMs. We now know that although MENMs have positive effects on soil ecosystem, their potential hazards are not negligible. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effects of MENMs on soil organisms. Meanwhile, we should pay more attention to the negative effects of MENMs on soil ecosystem while exploring their positive effects on soil ecosystem in future research.

Soil mineral nitrogen dynamics in fallow periods in a rainfed semiarid Mediterranean agricultural system

Rainfed agricultural systems in semiarid Mediterranean environments are subject to erratic but often heavy rainfall *** an agronomic practice,fallow periods can be included even within the existing European Union common policy for crop *** study aimed to quantify the effects of previous mineral fertilization on soil mineral nitrogen(N_(min))content and potential nitrate leaching during no-till fallow periods of crop *** Leaching Estimation and Chemistry Model(LEACHM)was used for soil N_(min)prediction after *** fallow periods,N_(min)measured in the soil profile increased by an average of 125 kg N ha^(-1),whereas the model showed an average increase of 95 kg N ha^(-1).The amount of nitrogen(N)leached was estimated to be 11–38 kg N ha^(-1).The N balance simulated using LEACHM might differ from the actual *** calibrated LEACHM underestimated soil N_(min)after a drought period followed by soil water replenishment,probably due to a pulse in soil C and N mineralization caused by the wetting of dry soil,but overestimated soil N_(min)after occasional rainy spells when soil quickly became saturated,probably due to occasional nitrous oxide emissions not being fully accounted for by the model and specific preferential water flow,which might lead to greater nitrate leaching than that simulated by LEACHM using the convection-dispersion *** results show that soil N_(min)measurements after fallow periods cannot be well predicted by *** findings of this study provide a support for fertilization planning for crop rotation systems including a fallow period to avoid overfertilization in the following cropping season and reduce N environmental impacts.

The Sohnari Member of the Early Eocene Laki Formation is massively deposited in the Southern Indus Basin of Pakistan and is considered a potential source rock to generate ***,the detailed paleoclimatic,paleoweathering,and depositional conditions of the Sohnari Member have not been studied *** research mainly discusses the detailed mineralogical(bulk and clay)and elemental geochemistry of the Laki Formation from two outcrop sections(Jhimpir and Lakhra)in the Southern Indus Basin,*** bulk minerals,including quartz(low),hematite,calcite,halite,gypsum,and clay minerals such as kaolinite,chlorite,smectite and illite have been discussed *** results demonstrate the paleo-environment of studied area was arid with enhanced saline and weak to strong oxidizing depositional *** chemical index of alteration(CIA)values in Jhimpir and Lakhra sections are in the ranges of 41.30-97.93 and 22.30-96.19,respectively,indicating that the Sohnari sediments experienced weak to intense chemical weathering in the source *** interpretation of the A-CN-K ternary diagram is consistent with the clay mineral contents in the studied sediments,which is characterized by the predominance of kaolinite,gibbsite and chlorite,demonstrating the weak to strong weathering state under warm and humid climatic *** chemical indices such as Sr/Ba,δU,V/Cr,Ni/Co,and Cu/Zn,U/Th and Ba/Ga show that Sohnari rocks of Early Eocene Laki Formation underwent strong evaporation,oxic water column with warm to humid and minor contact of cold climatic *** on our present data,it can be concluded that the sediments of Sohnari Member of Laki Formation from Jhimpir and Lakhra areas of Southern Indus Basin in Pakistan are related to Indio-Eurasian collision and came from the Indian shield rocks that were deposited in a brackish water body with a minor contact of the freshwater oxidizing paleo-environment depositional conditions.

Sowing uniformity of bed-type pneumatic maize planter at various seedbed preparation levels and machine travel speeds

Precision planters are important machines in the regime of modern technological *** conditions,seed metering system and machine operating parameters affect the pneumatic planter *** pneumatic planter was evaluated to determine the effect of three tillage levels(L1,L2,and L3)and four travel speeds(S1,S2,S3 and S4).The sowing uniformity of the planter was observed with respect to the horizontal distribution of seeds within a row and described by using the precision index(Ip),the multiple index(Imult),the miss-seeding index(Imiss)and the quality of feed index(Iqf).The results revealed that the tillage levels(L)and travel speed(S)had a significant effect(pdependent *** maximum Imiss(22.12%)was observed at L1 and S4 whereas the maximum Imult was observed at L1 and *** mean values of missing-,multi-,quality-feed and precision indices were 5.14%,5.833%,89.03%and 17.85%at L3,*** mean values of multi-index 17.59%,14.44%,12.40%and 10.18%,quality feed index 74.07%,75.92%,75.74%and 74.07%and precision indices 21.47%,23.26%,25.51%and 28.53%were at S1,S2,S3 and S4,*** study showed that maize could be seeding within an acceptable precise range by bed-type pneumatic planter subjected to the proper seedbed preparation level.

Survival analysis in nonagenarian patients with non-hip lower limb fractures

BACKGROUNd The United Kingdom has an aging population with nearly 1 in 5 being over the age of 65,and over 0.5 million over the age of *** treatment of acute fractures of the lower limb in the nonagenarian cohort of patients poses a technical challenge to orthopaedic *** To report the fracture incidence,survival outcomes of treating acute non-hip lower limb fractures in nonagenarians in Major Trauma *** Thirty Lower limb long bone fractures in patients of age from 90 to 99 years were identified during 12-mo at a Level 1 trauma centre from a computerized database.A retrospective evaluation performed for fracture incidence,treatment,length of hospital duration and mortality at 30-d,1-year and *** Thirty fractures(28 patients)were identified,twenty-four fractures were treated with surgery(mean age 93 years Sd±2.59)and 6 managed conservatively(mean age 94 years Sd±2.07).The mean length of the hospital stay was 18.2 d for both *** 30-d,1-year and 2-year mortality risks were 1/23,6/23 and 9/23(4%,26%and 39%)in the surgery group and 0/5,1/5 and 2/5(0%,20%and 40%)in the conservative group,with no evidence for a difference between the two groups at any time *** Nonagenarians in the surgical group had similar length of hospital stay and mortality risks as those treated *** with fewer comorbidities and admitted from their own home were offered surgery.

The half-degree matters for heat-related health impacts under the 1.5℃ and 2℃ warming scenarios: Evidence from ambulance data in Shenzhen, China

The Paris Agreement has prompted much interest in the societal and health impacts of limiting global warming to 1.5 ℃ and 2 ℃. Previous assessments of differential impacts of two targets indicate that 1.5 ℃ warming target would substantially reduce the impact on human health compared to 2 ℃, but they mainly focused on the magnitude of temperature changes under future climate change scenarios without any consideration of greater frequency of cumulative heat exposures within a day. Here we quantified the health risks of compound daytime and nighttime hot extremes using morbidity data in a megacity of China, and also identified the time-period of heat exposure with higher risks. Then we projected future morbidity burden attributable to compound hot extremes due to the half-degree warming. We estimated that the 2 ℃ warming scenario by 2100 as opposed to 1.5 ℃ would increase annual heat-related ambulance dispatches by 31% in Shenzhen city. Substantial additional impacts were associated with occurrence of consecutive hot days and nights, with ambulance dispatches increased by 82%. Our results suggested that compound hot extremes should be considered in assessment of heat-related health impacts, particularly in the context of climate change. Minimizing the warming of climate in a more ambitious target can significantly reduce the health damage.
