Characterization of early maturing elite genotypes based on MTsI and MGIdI indexes: an illustration in upland cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Background Globally, the cultivation of cotton is constrained by its tendency for extended periods of growth. Early maturity plays a potential role in rainfed-based multiple cropping system especially in the current era of climate change. In the current study, a set of 20 diverse Gossypium hirsutum genotypes were evaluated in two crop seasons with three planting densities and assessed for 11 morphological traits related to early maturity. The study aimed to identify genotype(s) that mature rapidly and accomplish well under diverse environmental conditions based on the two robust multivariate techniques called multi-trait stability index(MTsI) and multi-trait genotype-ideotype d.stance index(MGIdI).Results MTsI analysis revealed that out of the 20 genotypes, three genotypes, viz., NNdC-30, A-2, and.s-32 accomplished well in terms of early maturity traits in two seasons. Furthermore, three genotypes were selected using MGIdI method for each planting densities with a selection intensity of 15%. The strengths and weaknesses of the genotypes selected based on MGIdI method highlighted that the breeders could focus on developing early-maturing genotypes with specific traits such as days to first flower and boll opening. The selected genotypes exhibited positive genetic gains for traits related to earliness and a successful harvest during the first and.second pickings. However, there were negative gains for traits related to flowering and boll *** The study identified three genotypes exhibiting early maturity and accomplished well under different planting densities. The multivariate methods(MTsI and MGIdI) serve as novel approaches for selecting d.sired genotypes in plant breeding programs, especially across various growing environments. These methods offer exclusive benefits and can easily construe and minimize multicollinearity issues.

Heavy metal pollution of river water and eco-friendly remediation using potent microalgal species

Pollution of rivers is mainly caused by anthropogenic activities such as d.scharge of effluent from ind.strial facilities,maintenance of sewage/effluent treatment plants,and dumping of solid waste on river *** study dealt with the pollution issues of the Cooum River in the well-known city of Chennai in south *** samples from 27 locations were collected and analyzed for 12 elements,including Ba,B,and Al,as well as heavy metals such as Pb,Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn,and *** samples showed levels of these elements that exceeded World Health Organization *** correlation analysis revealed the inter-dependency among elements,and the contribution of each element based on factor loadings showed its percentage contribution compared to *** samples from six significant locations were chosen for remediation with three algae:Chlorella vulgaris,scened.smus dimorphus,and Phormedium *** uptake of pollutants led to the continuous growth of algae during the incubation period of 15 d,effectively removing heavy metals from the river *** increasing levels of algal counts and the chlorophyll a content confirmed the algal growth during the incubation period,followed by a declining stage after the incubation *** scanning electron microscopic images of algae before and after the remediation showed no remarkable modification of morphological *** study showed that the uptake of heavy metals using algae is an effective water pollution remediation measure,making the process practicable in the field on a large scale in the near future.

Quality assessment and hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater in Agastheeswaram taluk, Kanyakumari d.strict, Tamil Nadu, India

The present study investigates the hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater quality in Agastheeswaram taluk of Kanyakumari d.strict, Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 69 groundwater samples were collected during pre- and post-monsoon periods of 2011–2012. The groundwater quality assessment has been carried out by evaluating the physicochemical parameters such as pH, EC, Tds, HCO3-, Cl-, sO42-, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+ for both the seasons. Based on these parameters, groundwater has been assessed in favor of its suitability for drinking and irrigation purpose. dominant cations for both the seasons are in the order of Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ while the dominant anions for post monsoon and pre monsoon have the trends of Cl- > HCO3- > sO42- and HCO3- > Cl- > sO42-, respectively. Analytical results observed from various indices reveal that the groundwater quality is fairly good in some places. Analytical results of few samples show that they are severely polluted and incidentally found to be near the coasts, estuaries and.salt pans in the study area. The Gibbs plot indicates that the majority of groundwater samples fall in rock dominant region, which indicates rock water interaction in the study area. The United.states salinity(UssL) diagram shows that the groundwater is free from sodium hazards but the salinity hazard varies from low to very high throughout the study area. This reveals that the groundwater is moderately suitable for agricultural activities. The observed chemical variations in pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons may be the effect to rock-water interactions, ion-exchange reactions, and runoff of fertilizers from the surrounding agricultural lands.
