Nephroprotective activity of Solanum xanthocarpum fruit extract against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity and renal dysfunction in experimental rodents

Objective:To evaluate nephroprotective potential of Solarium xanthocarpum(***) fruit extract(SXE) against gentamicin(GM) induced nephrotoxicity) and renal dysfunction. Methods:Twenty-four Wistar rats were divided into four groups(n=6).Control rats that received normal saline(i.p.) and 0.5%carboxymethyl cellulose(p.o.) per day lor 8 *** was induced in rats by intraperitoneal administration of GM(100 mg/kg/d for 8 d) and were treated with SXE(200 and 400 mg/kg/d(p.o.) for 8 d).Plasma and urine urea and creatinine,kidney weight,urine output,blood urea nitrogen,renal enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and lipid peroxidation was evaluated along with histopathological investigation in various experimental groupsof ***:It was observed that the GM treatment induced significant elevation(Pd urine urea,creatinine,kidney weight,blood urea nitrogen, renal lipid peroxidation along with significant decrement(Pd non-enzymatic *** 200 and 400 mg/kg treatment to GM treated rats recorded significant decrement(up to Pd mine urea and creatinine, renal lipid peroxidation along with significanl increment(up to Pd non-enzvmatic *** obsenatioiis of kidney tissues too correlated with the biochemical ***:These finding powerfully supports that S,xanthocarpum fruit extract acts in the kidney as a potent scavenger of free radicals to prevent the toxic effects of GM both in the biochemical and histopathological parameters and thus validates its elhnomedicinal use.

Silicone rubber(SiR)composite material is a modern-day insulator for high voltage outdoor *** imperfection attributed to SiR is its weak resistance to tracking and erosion when exposed to an outdoor polluted environment which reduces its operational *** paper investigates the performance of SiR with the addition of 0,1,2.5,5,10 and 20%by weight contents of nano alumina(Al_(2)O_(3)).Inclined plane tests are performed according to IEC 60587 using the step up tracking voltage method with an initial voltage of 3.0 kV and the contaminant solution flow rate is maintained at 0.3 ml/min using a peristaltic *** applied voltage level is increased at a rate of 0.25 kV/*** suggest that physical tracking,erosion,RMS leakage current and surface partial discharge(Pd)performance of samples is improved with the addition of nano *** tracking length,eroded mass,RMS leakage current and average Pd magnitude are measured 22%,79%,30%and 52%lesser in 20 wt%relative to 0 wt%,respectively.A thermal distribution analysis is undertaken with infrared camera and it is discovered that heat is accumulated in the discharge area of the liquid *** maximum temperature on the insulating specimen is decreased with increasing nanofiller *** above promising findings can be due to better thermal stability with low chain mobility at the interaction zone of SiR and ***,less liquid evaporation due to better thermal conduction and improved physical bonding between SiR and nano alumina are possible reasons behind the excellent performance of nanocomposites.

Multi-material Bio-inspired Soft Octopus Robot for Underwater Synchronous Swimming

Inspired by the simple yet amazing morphology of the Octopus, we propose the design, fabrication, and characterization of multi-material bio-inspired soft Octopus robot (Octobot). 3d printed molds for tentacles and head were used. The tentacles of the Octobot were casted using Ecoflex-0030 while head was fabricated using relatively flexible material, i.e., OOMOO-25. The head is attached to the functionally responsive tentacles (each tentacle is of 79.12 mm length and 7 void space diameter), whereas Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) muscle wires of 0.5 mm thickness are used in Octobot tentacles for dual thrust generation and actuation of Octobot. The tentacles were separated in two groups and were synchronously actuated. Each tentacle of the developed Octobot contains a pair of SMA muscles (SMA-α and SMA-β). SMA-α muscles being the main actuator, was powered by 9 V, 350 mA power supply, whereas SMA-β was used to provide back thrust and thus helps to increase the actuation frequency. Simulation work of the proposed model was performed in the SolidWorks environment to verify the vertical velocity using the octopus tentacle actuation. The design morphology of Octobot was optimized using simulation and TRACKER software by analyzing the experimental data of angle, displacement, and velocity of real octopus. The as-developed Octobot can swim at variable frequencies (0.5–2 Hz) with the average speed of 25 mm/s (0.5 BLS). Therefore, the proposed soft Octopus robot showed an excellent capability of mimicking the gait pattern of its natural counterpart.

Water Quality and Some Heavy Metals in Water and Sediments of Euphrates River, Iraq

Water samples, sediments from three stations in Euphrates River, lraq were analyzed quantitatively for some physical and chemical characters and six heavy metals （Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb） using flam atomic absorption spectrophotpmeter in period Sept. 2009-Oct. 2010. The physical and chemical characters included temperature, pH, water flow, salinity, dissolved oxygen, BOd5, alkalinity total hardness, calcium and nutrients （nitrite, nitrate reactive phosphate and silicate）. The results showed variation in water flow 0.05-0.40 m/sec., according to the values of salinity 0.40%-0.60% values of the BOd5 were ranged between 0.2-4.3 mg/L. The mean concentration of the heavy metals （Pb, Ni, Mn, Co, Cu and Fe） of the dissolved phase in water were 0.13 μg/L, 0.021 μg/L, 0.31 μg/L, 4.29 μg/L, 7.78 μg/L, 6.46 μg/L and 79.04 μg/L, respectively, while their concentration in the particulate phase were 0.59 μg/g, 0.06 μg/g, 0.42 μg/g, 50.06 μg/g, 6.61 μg/g, 7.17 vg/g and 149.42 μg/g dry weight, respectively. Also the mean concentrations of heavy metals in sediment （exchangeable phase） were 0.51 vg/g,0.18 vg/g, 0.08 μg/g, 61.39 μg/g, 5.40 μg/g, 14.06 vg/g and 130.05 μg/g dry weight respectively, and 0.40 μg/g, 0.17 μg/g, 0.10 μg/g, 63.01 μg/g, 4.64 μg/g, 18.44 μg/g and 126.26 μg/g d.W. respectively in residual phase of sediment.

Variation in patient dose due to differences in calibration and dosimetry protocols

For precise and accurate patient dose delivery,the dosimetry system must be calibrated properly according to the recommendations of standard dosimetry protocols such as TG-51 and TRS-398. However, the dosimetry protocol followed by a calibration laboratory is usually different from the protocols that are followed by different clinics, which may result in variations in the patient *** prime objective in this study was to investigate the effect of the two protocols on dosimetry *** measurements were performed for a Co-60 teletherapy unit and a high-energy Varian linear accelerator with 6 and 15 MV photon and 6, 9, 12, and 15 MeV electron beams, following the recommendations and procedures of the AAPM TG-51 and IAEA TRS-398 dosimetry protocols. The dosimetry systems used for this study were calibrated in a Co-60 radiation beam at the Secondary Standard dosimetry Laboratory(SSdL) PINSTECH,Pakistan, following the IAEA TRS-398 protocol. The ratio of the measured absorbed doses to water in clinical setting,d_w(TG-51/TRS-398), was 0.999 and 0.997 for 6 and15 MV photon beams,whereas these ratios were 1.013,1.009, 1.003, and 1.000 for 6, 9, 12, and 15 MeV electron beams, respectively. This difference in the absorbed dosesto-water d_w ratio may be attributed mainly due to beam quality(K_Q) and ion recombination correction factor.

All the compositions in the(1-x)Mg_(0.95)Ni_(0.05)Ti_(0.98)Zr_(0.02)O_3–xCa_(0.6)La_(0.8/3)TiO_3(0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) series were fabricated using solid state sintering route. Mg_(0.95)Ni_(0.05)Ti_(0.98)Zr_(0.02)O_3 possessed excellent microwave dielectric properties with ε_r ≈ 17.1, Q_uf_0 ≈ 195855 GHz, and τ_f ≈-46 ppm/℃. t f was tuned through zero by mixing with Ca_(0.6)La_(0.8/3)TiO_3. In the present study, τ_f ≈-2 ppm/℃ with er ≈ 23.9 and high Q_uf_0 ≈ 115870 GHz was achieved for x = 0.15, i.e., for a mixture of 85% Mg_(0.95)Ni_(0.05)Ti_(0.98)Zr_(0.02)O_3–xCa_(0.6)La_(0.8/3)TiO_3.

BACKGROUNd Connective tissue growth factor(CTGF)is a mediator of transforming growth factor-beta signaling and plays a key role in connective tissue remodeling,inflammatory processes and fibrosis in various illnesses including *** To investigate the role of CTGF in colorectal cancer(CRC)progression and to compare the CTGF expression with different clinicopathological *** Real-time polymerase chain reaction,immunohistochemistry and Western blotting was performed to evaluate the CTGF expression and the results were statistically analyzed against the clinicopathological variables of patient data using STATA software version *** CTGF expression levels in tumor specimens were significantly higher than their paired normal *** higher protein expression levels showed a significant association with smoking,staging,tumor grade,invasion depth,necrosis of tumor tissue,and both lymphovascular and perineural *** per the cox regression model and classification tree analysis,tumor-nodemetastasis stage and perineural invasion were important predictors for CTGF expression and prognosis of CRC *** analysis indicated that CTGF overexpression was associated with poorer overall and disease-free *** Expression of CTGF was increased in CRC and was linked with poor overall and disease-free survival of CRC *** findings support prior observations and thus CTGF may be a possible prognostic marker in CRC.
