Red spherule coelomocytes are immune cells in the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus that have been characterizedas motile O2 transport cells. Video microscopy of living red spherule coelomocytes reveals a constitutive, dynamicarray of cellular morphologies and movements. Cells continuously send out and retract membrane blebs all over thecell surface as part of their normal cellular physiology. disruption of microtubules by perfusion with either nocodazoleor taxol had no effect on bleb formation or motility. Perfusion with cytochalasin B abated bleb formation andrevealed cells that exhibited multiple small spheres attached by short membrane extensions. Attenuation of blebbingand intracellular organelle motility were restored by washing out with cytochalasin B. Treatment with phalloidinalso abated bleb formation and revealed a smooth, spherical cellular morphology. The effects of phalloidin werecompletely reversible after washout. Red spherule coelomocytes treated with blebbistatin rounded up with anirreversible retraction of blebs into surface blebs that were greatly reduced in size, number and motility. Normal cellsurface bleb formation and intracellular organelle motility were not restored after washout of the drug. These resultsindicate that the acto-myosin contractile mechanism contributes to the dynamics of constitutive cell surface membraneblebbing in invertebrate immune cells.

Yersinia pestis,causative agent of plague,occurs throughout the western United States in rodent populations and periodically causes epizootics in susceptible species,including black-tailed prairie dogs(Cynomys ludovicianus).How *** persists long-term in the environment between these epizootics is poorly understood but multiple mechanisms have been proposed,including,among others,a separate enzootic transmission cycle that maintains *** without involvement of epizootic hosts and persistence of *** within epizootic host populations without causing high mortality within those *** live-trapped and collected fleas from black-tailed prairie dogs and other mammal species from sites with and without black-tailed prairie dogs in 2004 and 2005 and tested all fleas for presence of *** was not detected in 2126 fleas collected in 2004 but was detected in 294 fleas collected from multiple sites in 2005,before and during a widespread epizootic that drastically reduced black-tailed prairie dog populations in the affected *** and spatial patterns of *** occurrence in fleas and genotyping of *** present in some infected fleas suggest *** was introduced multiple times from sources outside the study area and once introduced,was dispersed between several *** conclude *** likely was not present in these black-tailed prairie dog colonies prior to epizootic activity in these *** we did not identify likely enzootic hosts,we found evidence that deer mice(Peromyscus maniculatus)may serve as bridging hosts for *** between unknown enzootic hosts and black-tailed prairie dogs.

Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high ***,the large volumetric expansion,poor ion conductivity and unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) lead to rapid capacity fading and low rate ***,we report Si nitride (SiN) comprising stoichiometric Si_(3)N_(4) and Li-active anazotic SiN_(x) coated porous Si (p-Si@SiN)for high-performance anodes in *** ant-nest-like porous Si consisting of 3d interconnected Si nanoligaments and bicontinuous nanopores prevents pulverization and accommodates volume expansion during *** Si_(3)N_(4) offers mechanically protective coating to endow highly structural integrity and inhibit superfluous formation of *** fast ion conducting Li_(3)N generated in situ from lithiation of active SiN_(x) facilitates Li ion ***,the p-Si@SiN anode has appealing electrochemical properties such as a high capacity of 2180 mAh g^(-1)at 0.5 A g^(-1) with 84%capacity retention after 200cycles and excellent rate capacity with discharge capacity of 721 mAh g^(-1) after 500 cycles at 5.0 A g^(-1).This work provides insights into the rational design of active/inactive nanocoating on Si-based anode materials for fast-charging and highly stable LIBs.

Tandem rapid manufacturing of Inconel-625 using laser assisted and plasma transferred arc depositions

This paper presents an investigation on depo- sition of Inconel-625 using laser rapid manufacturing （LRM） and plasma transferred arc （PTA） deposition in individual and tandem mode. LRM has advantages in terms of dimensional accuracy, improved mechanical properties, finer process control, reduced heat input and lower thermal distortion, while PTA scores more in terms of lower initial investment, lower running cost and higher deposition rate. To quantify the clubbed advantages and limitations of both processes, these were studied individually and in tandem. A number of samples were deposited at different process parameters like power, scan speed, powder feed rate. They were subjected to tensile test, adhesion-cohesion test, impact test and micro hardness measurement. The results of individual tests showed the comparable mechanical prop- erties with i20% variation. The mixed dendritic-cellular and dendritic-columnar microstructures were respectively observed for LRM and PTA deposits with a distinct inter- face for the case of tandem deposition. The interface strength of tandem deposits was evaluated employing adhesion-cohesion test, and it was found to be （325 i 35） MPa. The study confirmed the viability of LRM and PTA deposition in tandem for hybrid manufacturing.

Collembolan density and diversity in a Forest and an Agroecosystem

Collembola, commonly called “springtails” are wingless soft-bodied hexapods that are usually between 1 and 3 millimetres in length and occur in varying habits such as, soil surface and litter, under rocks or the bark of trees. The great majority develop in soil, feeding on fungi, bacteria, algae and decaying plant matter, and along with other soil fauna constitute the decomposer community. The present study examines the diversity, density, and seasonal variation patterns of collembolan fauna under different intensities of disturbance, as evidenced in a forest and an agroecosystem. Results indicate that both densities and diversity of collembola was higher in the forest than in the agroecosystem. Seasonal fluctuation exhibited an increase from spring to summer and autumn and a decrease during winter. The coorelation patterns with different chemo-edaphic factors did not show any specific *** of diversity and significant correlation values are discussed in light of landuse.

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of acute exercise on short-term memory *** computerized literature searches using electronic databases and examinations of reference lists from relevant studies yielded six studies meeting our inclusionary *** a total of six studies,16 standardized regression coefficient effect sizes(ESs)were calculated to be *** meta-analyses showed a statistically significant increase in short-term memory improvement across both the exercise and non-exercise control groups in trials 1-5[ES=0.96,95%CI(0.95,0.97),Pdifference between exercise and control groups(Q_(b)=0.40,df=1,P=0.53).Our meta-analytic review provides suggestive evidence that an acute bout of exercise prior to learning does not result in short-term memory improvement to a greater extent than a non-exercise *** research is needed to further evaluate whether acute exercise enhances long-term memory via enhanced learning and/or post-learning mechanisms.

With the introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART),a dramatic reduction in HIV-related morbidity and mortality has been ***,it is now becoming increasingly clear that liver-related complications,particularly rapid fibrosis development from ART as well as from the chronic HIV infection itself,are of serious concern to HIV *** pathophysiology of liver fibrosis in patients with HIV is a multifactorial process whereby persistent viral replication,and bacterial translocation lead to chronic immune activation and inflammation,which ART is unable to fully suppress,promoting production of fibrinogenic mediators and *** addition,mitochondrial toxicity,triggered by both ART and HIV,contributes to intrahepatic damage,which is even more severe in patients co-infected with viral *** recent years,new insights into the mechanisms of accelerated fibrosis and liver disease progression in HIV has been obtained,and these are detailed and discussed in this review.
