Up to now,the dNA molecule adsorbed on a surface was believed to always preserve its native *** belief implies a negligible contribution of lateral surface forces during and after dNA adsorption although their impact has never been ***-resolution atomic force microscopy was used to observe that stiff dNA molecules kinetically trapped on monomolecular films comprising one-dimensional periodically charged lamellar templates as a single layer or as a sublayer are oversaturated by sharp discontinuous kinks and can also be locally melted and *** argue that kink/anti-kink pairs are induced by an overcritical lateral bending stress(>30 pNnm)inevitable for the highly anisotropic 1d-1d electrostatic interaction of dNA and underlying rows of positive surface *** addition,the unexpected kink-inducing mechanical instability in the shape of the template-directed dNA confined between the positively charged lamellar sides is observed indicating the strong impact of *** previously reported anomalously low values of the persistence length of the surface-adsorbed dNA are explained by the impact of the surface-induced low-scale *** sites of the local melting and supercoiling are convincingly introduced as other lateral stress-induced structural dNA anomalies by establishing a link with dNA high-force *** results open up the study in the completely unexplored area of the principally anomalous kinetically trapped dNA surface conformations in which the dNA local mechanical response to the surface-induced spatially modulated lateral electrostatic stress is essentially *** underlying rich and complex in-plane nonlinear physics acts at the nanoscale beyond the scope of applicability of the worm-like chain approximation.

Filtered Backprojection Reconstruction with depth-dependent Filtering

A direct filtered-backprojection （FBP） reconstruction algorithm is presented for circular cone-beam computed tomography （CB-CT） that allows the filter operation to be applied efficiently with shift-variant band-pass characteristics on the kernel function. Our algorithm is derived from the ramp-filter based FBP method of Feldkamp et al. and obtained by decomposing the ramp filtering into a convolution involving the Hilbert kernel （global operation） and a subsequent differentiation operation （local operation）. The differentiation is implemented as a finite difference of two （Hilbert filtered） data samples and carried out as part of the backprojection step. The spacing between the two samples, which defines the low-pass characteristics of the filter operation, can thus be selected individually for each point in the image volume. We here define the sample spacing to follow the magnification of the divergent-beam geometry and thus obtain a novel, depth-dependent filtering algorithm for circular CB-CT. We evaluate this resulting algorithm using computer-simulated CB data and demonstrate that our algorithm yields results where spatial resolution and image noise are distributed much more uniformly over the field-of-view, compared to Feldkamp＇s approach.

Implications of safety requirements for the treatment of THMC processes in geological disposal systems for radioactive waste

The mission of nuclear safety authorities in national radioactive waste disposal programmes is to ensure that people and the environment are protected against the hazards of ionising radiations emitted by the *** implies the establishment of safety requirements and the oversight of the activities of the waste management organisation in charge of implementing the *** Belgium,the safety requirements for geological disposal rest on the following principles:defence-in-depth,demonstrability and the radiation protection principles elaborated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection(ICRP).Applying these principles requires notably an appropriate identification and characterisation of the processes upon which the safety functions fulfilled by the disposal system rely and of the processes that may affect the system ***,research and development(R&d)on safety-relevant thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical(THMC)issues is important to build confidence in the safety *** paper points out the key THMC processes that might influence radionuclide transport in a disposal system and its surrounding environment,considering the dynamic nature of these *** nature and significance are expected to change according to prevailing internal and external conditions,which evolve from the repository construction phase to the whole heatingecooling cycle of decaying waste after *** these processes have a potential impact on safety,it is essential to identify and to understand them properly when developing a disposal concept to ensure compliance with relevant safety *** particular,the investigation of THMC processes is needed to manage *** includes the identification and characterisation of uncertainties as well as for the understanding of their safety-relevance.R&d may also be necessary to reduce uncertainties of which the magnitude does not allow demonstrating the safety of the disposal system.

Multiple Functions of Nuclear dNA Helicase Ⅱ (RNA Helicase A) in Nucleic Acid Metabolism

Nuclear dNA helicase II (NdH II), or RNA helicase A (RHA), was initially discovered in mammals by conventional protein purification methods. Molecular cloning identified apparent sequence ho- mologies between NdH II and a drosophila protein named maleless (MLE), the latter being essential for the drosophila X-chromosome dosage compensation. Increasing amounts of evidence suggest that NdH II is involved in multiple aspects of cellular and viral dNA and RNA metabolism. Moreover the functions of NdH II may have potential clinical implications related to viral infection, autoimmune diseases, or even tumorigenesis.

TRANSIMIdIZATION IN THERMOPLASTIC POLYIMIdES

In order to improve the processibility in thermoplastic polyimides, a new method, termed the'reactive plasticizer' approach, has been proposed. This method uses a small amount (5～15 mol%) of a lessactivated, weak nucleophilic diamine co-monomer as a 'reactive plasticizer' to obtain copolyimide resinswhich possess relatively low viscosity at low temperatures and can be readily processed through the autoclavecycle at low pressures. during a high temperature treatment, the reactive plasticizers join the reaction to formhigh molecular weight copolyimides, and the preferred material properties are thus achieved. The mosteffective reactive plasticizer is aromatic heterocyclic diamines, such as 2, 6-diaminopyridine diamine (dAP),and the transimidization involved with a reactive plasticizer has been proposed to play a major role for thesuccess of this approach. In order to understand the transimidization mechanism, three steps have been takenin this research: first, a copolyimide system of 50% of dAP and 50% 1, 4 -bis [4-aminophenoxy] benzenediamine (dOdA) with 100% of 2, 2'-bis[4-(3, 4-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl] propane dianhydride (Ultem^(R)dA) is prepared. Second, several specifically designed polyimide mixture systems were used, and they consistof two homopolyimides: one is Ultem^(R) dA-dOdA, and the other is Ultem^(R) dA-dAP. The third step is toinvestigate two mixture systems in which Ultem^(R) dA-dOdA is mixed with dAP monomer solution andUltem^(R) dA-dAP is mixed with dOdA monomer solution. For all systems, with increasing degree oftransimidization upon heat-treatment, the chain structures of the mixtures and their thermal and dynamicmechanical transition behaviors are investigated via one-dimensional and two-dimensional nuclear magneticresonance, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis experiments.
