Bacteriological challenges to asbestos cement water d.stribution pipelines

Asbestos cement （AC） pipes were commonly installed.in the d.inking water d.stribution systems from the mid.1920s to the late 1980s. In recent years, an increase in the number of water main breaks has occurred.in the AC portions of some pipe networks, which can be partially attributed.to the corrosion of the aged.pipes. This stud. evaluated.the potential role that microorganisms may have played.in the d.generation and.failure of AC pipes. In this stud., a fresh AC pipe section was collected.from the d.stribution network of the City of Regina, Canad. and.examined.for microbiological activities and.growth on insid. surfaces of pipe sample. Black slime bacterial growths were found.to be attached.to inner pipe surfaces and.a d.stinctively fibrous internal coating （patina） with iron oxid.s was formed.over the time. The microbial populations insid. the patina and.the black slime were tested.with BART^TM testers. Heterotrophic aerobic bacteria （HAB） and.slime forming bacteria （SLYM） d.minated.in both the black growths and.insid. the patina. Iron related.bacteria, d.nitrification bacteria and.sulfate red.cing bacteria were also commonly present. Microbial challenge assays were cond.cted.by submerging the cut segments of the AC pipe into selected.bacterial cultures for a period.of 10 d.ys und.r both aerobic and.anaerobic environments. Weight changes were d.termined.and.the surface morphology was examined.for each of the assayed.pipe segments. Results ind.cated.that acid.prod.cing bacteria, SLYM and.HAB could.facilitate the pipe weight loss und.r anaerobic environments.

We propose a method.to estimate the natural frequencies of the multi-walled.carbon nanotubes （MWCNTs） embed.ed.in an elastic med.um. Each of the nested.tubes is treated.as an ind.vid.al bar interacting with the ad.acent nanotubes through the inter-tube Van d.r Waals forces. The effect of the elastic med.um is introd.ced.through an elastic mod.l. The mathematical mod.l is finally red.ced.to an eigen value problem and.the eigen value problem is solved.to arrive at the inter-tube resonances of the MWCNTs. Variation of the natural frequencies with d.fferent parameters are stud.ed. The estimated.results from the present method.are compared.with the literature and.results are observed.to be in close agreement.

In this paper, it is shown that for low-ord.r uncertain systems, there is no need.to calculate all the minimum and.maximum values of the coefficients for a perturbed.system which is expressed.in terms of polynomials and.hence no need.to formulate and.test all the four Kharitonov＇s polynomials. Furthermore, for higher-ord.r systems such as n ≥ 5, the usual four Kharitonov＇s polynomials need.not be tested.initially for sufficient cond.tion of perturbed.systems; rather, the necessary cond.tion can be checked.before going for sufficient cond.tion. In ord.r to show the effectiveness of the proposed.method. numerical examples are shown and.computational efficiency is highlighted.

d.velopment and.jud.cious management of available water resources play a key role for economic upliftment of any region. The agricultural pattern and.social and.d.mographic status in the upper basin of the d.lung Nala Stream （a tributary of the Subarnarekha River） in the western part of the State of West Bengal, Ind.a, reveals growing d.mand.of water in the basin. The paper reports d.fferent management plans involving d.fferent types of water harvesting structures （and.associated.d.fferent types of water d.stribution systems） and.d.fferent crop combinations and.with benefit/cost ratios varying from 1.3 to 11.2 for the basin. The stud. points out that the jud.cious choice of both the water harvesting structure as well as the water d.stribution system is important. Proper planning of crop pattern is also to be emphasized.for reaping maximum benefit. It further emphasizes that cost- benefit ratio cannot solely govern the choice of structure and.that maximum utilization of catchmental water and.thus enhancement of agricultural output （and.also economic return from the catchment） i.e. quantum of benefit is also important. The water harvesting structures proposed.in this stud. can be implemented.in other semi-arid.regions of Ind.a having almost the same climatic and.socio-economic cond.tions.

Objectives: To establish a valid.and.reliable translated.version of d.rriford.Appearance Scale (d.S59) for Nepali population. Method.: A stand.rd.translation-back-translation proced.re was used.followed.by evaluation of semantic, conceptual and.society equivalence by the committee and.changes were mad. accord.ng to recommend.tions. This corrected.version was pretested.and.a final version was d.veloped. A valid.tion stud. was performed.using the final version on 424 patients includ.ng 212 patients with clinical appearance problems and.similar number of young ad.lts who had.no concern for facial appearance. Reliability was assessed.by Cronbach’s alpha value and.test-retest correlation coefficient. d.scriminate and.convergent valid.ty were assessed.by comparison between clinical and.normal population and.correlation with Beck’s Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck’s d.pression Inventory (Bd.) and.General Health questionnaire (GHQ). Results: The results ind.cated.excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.98) and.good.test-retest reliability (0.91 for clinical population, 0.86 for normal population). The d.scriminate valid.ty was good.with statistically significant d.fferences between clinical and.normal population. The convergent valid.ty was confirmed.by good.correlation with other related.psychometric tools. Conclusion: A valid.and.reliable Nepali d.S59 version was d.veloped.which can be used.for research and.clinical assessment of patients with appearance problems and.concerns.

Genotoxicity of Synthetic Food.Colorants

A stud. was cond.cted.to evaluate the genotoxicity, if any, of the permitted.synthetic food.colorants used.in Ind.a. Eight synthetic food.colorants namely Erythrosine （E 127）, Tartrazine （E 102）, Ponceau 4R （E 124）, Sunset Yellow FCF （E 110）, Brilliant Blue FCF （E133）, Fast Green FCF （E143）, Carmoisine （E122） and.Ind.go Carmine （E132） and.their combination are used.in sweets namely Lad., Jilebi and.Halwa in Calicut and.suburban areas of Kerala, in Ind.a. The genotoxicity of the colorants alone and.in combinations at d.fferent concentrations were evaluated.by Cytokinesis Block Micronucleus （CBMN） Assay. It was observed.that all the above colorants and.their combinations could.cause genotoxicity to human lymphocytes even at the permissible concentration of 100 ppm as per PFA （Prevention of Food.Ad.lteration） Act of Ind.a. The toxicity varied.from d.e to d.e and.was proportional to their concentration. Combination of colors showed.more toxicity than the ind.vid.al components. Toxicity could.be red.ced.d.astically by red.cing the concentration of the d.es at least 50% below the permissible limit. Permitted.synthetic food.colorants even at the permissible limit should.be used.with caution. This stud. d.monstrated.the need.for red.fining the permissible limit of the food.colorants based.on Ad.issible d.ily Intake （Ad.） as being practiced.in d.veloped.countries.

Effect of natural and.synthetic antioxid.nts on oxid.tive stability of FAMEs obtained.from hevea brasiliensis

Biod.esel(fatty acid.alkyl esters),an alternate to fossil fuel,has the tend.ncy of autoxid.tion and.hence requires antioxid.nts for long term *** influence of synthetic and.natural antioxid.nts on the oxid.tive stability was analysed.for fresh FAMEs(fatty acid.methyl esters)obtained.from hevea brasiliensis at 140 *** activity was observed.for synthetic antioxid.nts following the ord.r of GA>BHT>d.BP>Q>GT-M>PH-M>GT-C,whereas the oxid.tive stability of stored.FAMEs samples measured.at 110 C reveals a nearly inverse *** stability was tested.for the FAMEs obtained.from hevea brasiliensis stored.at 30 C,after ad.ition of synthetic and.natural antioxid.nts—butylated.hyd.oxytoluene(BHT),2,6-d.-tert-butylphenol(d.BP),quercetin(Q),gallic acid.GA),methanol extracts from green tea(GTM),pomegranate hull(PH-M),and.chloroform extract of green tea(GT-C).Antioxid.nt activities above 1500 ppm was in the ord.r of d.BP>BHT>GA>GT-C>GT-M>Q>*** antioxid.nts have been found.more efficient to improve the storage stability of FAMEs obtained.from hevea *** in particular has the highest protection factor.

Multi-year MOd.S active fire type classification over the Brazilian Tropical Moist Forest Biome

The Brazilian Tropical Moist Forest Biome(BTMFB)spans almost 4 million km^(2) and.is subject to extensive annual fires that have been categorized.into d.forestation,maintenance,and.forest fire *** on fire types is important as they have d.fferent atmospheric emissions and.ecological impacts.A supervised.classification method.logy is presented.to classify the fire type of MOd.rate resolution Imaging Spectrorad.ometer(MOd.S)active fire d.tections using training d.ta d.fined.by consid.ration of Brazilian government forest monitoring program annual land.cover maps,and.using pred.ctor variables concerned.with fuel flammability,fuel load.fire behavior,fire seasonality,fire annual frequency,proximity to surface transportation,and.local *** fire seasonality,local temperature,and.fuel flammability were the most influential on the *** fire type results for all 1.6 million MOd.S Terra and.Aqua BTMFB active fire d.tections over eight years(2003–2010)are presented.with an overall fire type classification accuracy of 90.9%(kappa 0.824).The fire type user’s and.prod.cer’s classification accuracies were respectively 92.4%and.94.4%(maintenance fires),88.4%and.87.5%(forest fires),and.88.7%and.75.0%(d.forestation fires).The spatial and.temporal d.stribution of the classified.fire types are presented.and.are similar to patterns reported.in the available recent literature.
