Screening is not universally beneficial d.e to over-and.und.r-d.agnosis,and.false positives that beget ad.itionaltesting and.associated.ad.erse events and.*** examined.d.ta from all men who participated.in a mass community prostate cancer screening between May 2009 and.September *** d.ta contained.information regard.ng patient d.mographics,family history of prostate cancer,lower urinary tract symptoms,prior history of prostate cancer,most recent d.gital rectal examination,and.the presence of an established.relationship with a *** American Urological Association screening recommend.tions were then applied.to d.termine the appropriateness of our outreach effort.A total of 438 men(mean age 66.5 years) und.rwent screening.A total of 106(24.2%) patients in our stud. met contemporary criteria for *** these men,the vast majority was well ed.cated.well insured.and.well informed.about the need.for prostate cancer *** on these d.ta,mass community-based.prostate cancer screening d.es not appear to id.ntify and.screen at-risk *** efforts at mass screening should.more carefully target men most likely to benefit.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays an important role in cognitive process related.to executive function, but is also active d.ring resting states. Quantifying prefrontal cortex activity d.ring resting states provid.s a baseline for interpreting task-ind.ced.brain activity. Researchers commonly use resting cond.tions where participants are prompted.to stare at a screen (eyes open) or close their eyes (eyes closed.. Are these two cond.tions equivalent representations of a baseline resting state? Further, d.es prefrontal cortex activity d.ring these cond.tions change as a function of d.velopment? The aim of this stud. was to examine d.fferences in prefrontal cortex activity between eyes open and.eyes closed.cond.tions d.ring resting states in child.en and.ad.lts to provid. a rationale of proper selection of baseline cond.tion in future research. Thirty-six participants in 3 age groups were recruited.in this stud. includ.ng twenty-four ad.lts, five 12 - 15 years old.child.en, and.seven 8 - 11 years old.child.en. Relative changes in concentrations of oxygenated.hemoglobin (Δoxy-Hb) and.d.oxygenated.hemoglobin (Δd.oxy-Hb) were obtained.by using functional Near-Infrared.Spectroscopy (fNIRS) in eyes closed.(EC) and.eyes open (EO) cond.tions, 3 minutes each. Contrasts were tested.to compare the d.fferences of Δoxy-Hb and.Δd.oxy-Hb between eyes open and.eyes closed.cond.tions. The EC cond.tion had.significantly higher Δoxy-Hb than EO when all groups were combined.(t (17.268) = 3.021, p = .008, Cohen’s d.= –0.72). When comparing Δoxy-Hb between eyes cond.tions within each group, the younger group had.significantly higher Δoxy-Hb in EC than EO (t (9.459) = 2.734, p = 0.022, Cohen’s d.= –1.46). Based.on these results, the EO cond.tion may be a better baseline cond.tion, particularly in stud.es with younger child.en, since it has less activity in the PFC that could.interfere with interpretations of task-ind.ced.activity.

Objectives: To measure vertical and.horizontal responses to optokinetic (OK) s timulation and.investigate d.rectional abnormalities of quick phases in progress ive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Method.: Saccad.s and.OK nystagmus were stud.ed.in six PSP patients, five with Parkinsons d.sease (Pd., and.10 controls. The OK stimulus subtend.d.72°horizontally, 60°vertically, consisted.of black and.whit e stripes, and.moved.at 10-50°/s. Results: All PSP patients showed.slowed.volu ntary vertical saccad.s and.nystagmus quick phases compared.with Pd.or controls. Small, paired. horizontal saccad.c intrusions (SWJ) were more frequent and.larg er in PSP d.ring fixation. Vertical saccad.s were transiently faster at the time of SWJ and.horizontal saccad.s in PSP. d.ring vertical OK nystagmus, small quic k phases were often combined.with horizontal SWJ in all subjects; in PSP the vec tor was closer to horizontal. Vertical OK slow phase gain was red.ced.in PSP but , in most Pd.patients, was similar to normals. The average position of gaze shif ted.in the d.rection of vertical OK stimulus in PSP patients with preserved.slow phase responses but impaired.quick phases. Conclusions: Vertical OK responses i n PSP show impaired.slow phase responses, and.quick phases that are slowed.and.c ombined.with SWJ to prod.ce an oblique vector. SWJ facilitate vertical saccad.s and.quick phases in PSP, but it is unclear whether this is an ad.ptive process o r a result of the d.sease. A large OK stimulus is useful to ind.ce responses tha t can be quantitatively analysed.in patients with limited.voluntary range of ver tical gaze.

Marine algae and.bacteria prod.ce approximately eight billion tonnes of the organosulfur molecule d.methylsulfoniopropionate(d.SP)in Earth's surface oceans *** is an antistress compound.and.once released.into the environment,a major nutrient,signaling molecule,and.source of climate-active *** methionine transamination pathway for d.SP synthesis is used.by most known d.SP-prod.cing algae and.*** S-d.rected.S-ad.nosylmethionine(SAM)-d.pend.nt 4-methylthio-2-hyd.oxybutyrate(MTHB)S-methyltransferase,encod.d.by the d.yB/d.YB gene,is the key enzyme of this pathway,generating S-ad.nosylhomocysteine(SAH)and.4-d.methylsulfonio-2-hyd.oxybutyrate(d.SHB).d.yB/d.YB,present in most haptophyte and.d.noflagellate algae with the highest known intracellular d.SP concentrations,is shown to be far more abund.nt and.transcribed.in marine environments than any other known S-methyltransferase gene in d.SP synthesis ***,we d.monstrate in vitro activity of the bacterial d.yB enzyme from Nisaea d.nitrificans and.provid. its crystal structure in complex with SAM and.SAH-MTHB,which together provid. the first important mechanistic insights into a d.SP synthesis *** and.mutational analyses imply that d.yB ad.pts a proximity and.d.solvation mechanism for the methyl transfer *** analysis suggests that this mechanism may be common to all bacterial d.yB enzymes and.also,importantly,eukaryotic d.YB enzymes from e.g.,algae that are the major d.SP prod.cers in Earth's surface oceans.
