The presence of heavy metals such as arsenic(As)and chromium(Cr)can be considered one of the most toxic heavy *** study aims to develop and evaluate a graphene oxide(GO)based material functionalized with ferrihydrite for the removal of As(V)in the presence of Cr(VI).The adsorbent ferrihydrite-functionalized graphene oxide(GOFH)was characterized by SEM,FTIR,XRd,XPS,surface charge,BET and *** adsorption capacities for As(V)and Cr(VI)were 160 and 66 mg g^(-1)respectively at pH 4 and 298 K,fitting the Langmuir *** binary systems,GOFH adsorbed As(V)with an adsorption capacity of 137 mg g^(-1)in the presence of 20 mg L^(-1)Cr(VI)at room *** analysis revealed an exothermic and spontaneous ***,GOFH effectively removed several coexisting anions from groundwater,including SO_(4)^(2-),CO_(3)^(2-)and Cl^(-).This work evidences the potential of GOFH for competitive adsorption of priority pollutants from complex *** GOFH material represents a technically and economically viable technology for application in groundwater decontamination,as it requires inexpensive precursors and ambient conditions during synthesis and operation.

Precipitation analysis of as-cast HK40 steel after isothermal aging

As-cast HK40 steel was aged at 700, 800, or 900℃ for times as long as 2000 h. Microstructural characterization showed that the primary M_7C_3 carbide network contained a substantial content of manganese, in agreement with the microsegregation of manganese calculated by Thermo-Calc using the Scheil–Gulliver module. The dissolution of primary carbides caused the solute supersaturation of austenite and subsequent precipitation of fine M_(23)C_6 carbides in the austenite matrix for aged specimens. during prolonged aging, the carbide size increased with increasing time because of the coarsening process. A time–temperature–precipitation diagram for M_(23)C_6 carbides was calculated using the Thermo-CalcPRISMA software; this diagram showed good agreement with the experimental growth kinetics of precipitation. The fine carbide precipitation caused an increase in hardness; however, the coarsening process of carbides promoted a decrease in hardness. Nanoindentation tests of the austenite matrix indicated an increase in ductility with increasing aging time.

Effect of homogenization process on the hardness of Zn-Al-Cu alloys

The effect of a homogenizing treatment on the hardness of as-cast Zn–Al–Cu alloys was investigated. Eight alloy compositions were prepared and homogenized at 350 °C for 180 h, and their Rockwell 'B' hardness was subsequently measured. All the specimens were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and metallographically prepared for observation by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results of the present work indicated that the hardness of both alloys(as-cast and homogenized) increased with increasing Al and Cu contents; this increased hardness is likely related to the presence of the θ and τ′ phases. A regression equation was obtained to determine the hardness of the homogenized alloys as a function of their chemical composition and processing parameters, such as homogenization time and temperature, used in their preparation.

developing targets for radiation transport experiments at the Omega laser facility

Targets have been developed to measure supersonic radiation transport in aerogel foams usinff absorption spectroscopy. The target consists of an aerogel foam uniformly doped with either titanium or scandium inserted into an undoped aerogel foam package. This creates a localized doped foam region to provide spatial resolution for the measurement. development and characterization of the foams is a key challenge in addition to machining and assembling the two foams so they mate without gaps. The foam package is inserted into a beryllium sleeve and mounted on a gold hohlranm. The target is mounted to a holder created using additive manufacturing and mounted on a stalk. The manufacturing of the components, along with assembly and metrology of the target are described here.

Sustained volume decreases in simple renal cysts after sclerotherapy using NBCA with or without hydrodissection

The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of sclerotherapy using NBCA(Histoacryl Blue(?);***,Melgungen,Germany),with or without hydrodissection,for the treatment of simple renal *** and Methods:Patients who presented to an interventional radiology clinic for the diagnosis of symptomatic renal cysts which had previously been identified at an outpatient clinic were selected for inclusion in this study.A total of 28 patients were randomly divided into 2 groups,based on whether or not they underwent hydrodissection along with ultrasound-guided NBCA-based *** were performed at 0,7,and 180 days postprocedure to record the residual volume of the renal cysts and to determine the efficacy of the ***:A total of 32 cysts in 28 patients were treated with sclerotherapy,18(64%) females and 10(36%) *** average age of the patients was 61.8 years(range:33-89 years).All patients reported an improvement in symptoms associated with the existing renal cysts at 7 and 180 days post-procedure,and at 7 days post-procedure a statistically significant reduction in cyst volume was observed(all patients:96.8%;group A:96%;group B:97.6%).The reduced cyst volume was still observed 180 days post-procedure(all patients:98.6%;group A:98.2%;group B:98.9%).There was no significant difference between the two treatment ***: There is a significant and persistent reduction in the volume of renal cysts,in addition to an improvement of the associated symptoms,after treatment with NBCA-based sclerotherapy,with or without hydrodissection.

Energetic Macroscopic Representation of an Electrically Heated Building with Electric Thermal Storage and Heating Control for Peak Shaving

As a part of the Smart Grid concept, an efficient energy management at the residential level has received increasing attention in lately research. Its main focus is to balance the energy consumption in the residential environment in order to avoid the undesirable peaks faced by the electricity supplier. This challenge can be achieved by means of a home energy management system (HEMS). The HEMS may consider local renewable energy production and energy storage, as well as local control of some particular loads when peaks mitigation is necessary. This paper presents the modeling and comparison of two residential systems;one using conventional electric baseboard heating and the other one supported by Electric Thermal Storage (ETS);the ETS is employed to optimize the local energy utilization pursuing the peak shaving of residential consumption profile. Simulations of the proposed architecture using the Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR) demonstrate the potential of ETS technologies in future HEMS.

Microbial communities biostimulated by ethanol during uranium （VI） bioremediation in contaminated sediment as shown by stable isotope probing

Stable isotope probing （SIP） was used to identify microbes stimulated by ethanol addition in microcosms containing two sediments collected from the bioremediation test zone at the US department of Energy Oak Ridge site, TN, USA. One sample was highly bioreduced with ethanol while another was less reduced. Microcosms with the respective sediments were amended with ^13C labeled ethanol and incubated for 7 days for SIP. Ethanol was rapidly converted to acetate within 24h accompanied with the reduction of nitrate and sulfate. The accumulation of acetate persisted beyond the 7 d period. Aqueous U did not decline in the microcosm with the reduced sediment due to desorption of U but continuously declined in the less reduced sample. Microbial growth and concomitant 13C-dNA production was detected when ethanol was exhausted and abundant acetate had accumulated in both microcosms. This coincided with U（VI） reduction in the less reduced sample. I3C originating from ethanol was ultimately utilized for growth, either directly or indirectly, by the dominant microbial community members within 7 days of incubation. The microbial community was comprised predominantly of known denitrifiers, sulfate-reducing bacteria and iron （Ⅲ） reducing bacteria including desulfovibrio, Sphingomonas, Ferribacterium, Rhodanobacter, Geothrix, Thiobacillus and others, including the known U（VI）-redueing bacteria Acidovorax, Anaeromyxobacter, desulfovibrio, Geobac- ter and desulfosporosinus. The findings suggest that ethanol biostimulates the U（VI）-reducing microbial com- munity by first serving as an electron donor for nitrate, sulfate, iron （IH） and U（VI） reduction, and acetate which then functions as electron donor for U（VI） reduction and carbon source for microbial growth.

Adsorption of Pharmaceutical Contaminants from Aqueous Solutions Using N,O-Carboxymethyl Chitosan/Polyethylene Oxide (PEO) Electrospun Nanofibers

Residues of pharmaceutical and direct metabolites discharged into the aquatic environment have become a challenge for wastewater treatment facilities due to their increase in concentration and their different physicochemical properties. These emerging contaminants are daily detected in surface water and wastewater discharged by municipalities. To remediate the contaminated water, various methods are currently used including primary, secondary, and tertiary advanced treatments. However, some economic and environmental limitations have forced the scientific community to develop alternative disinfection processes to purify wastewater. As such, the adsorption strategy represents a “green” low-cost and effective solution to remove pollutants from water. In this study, a nanomaterial made of N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (N,O-CMCS) was prepared using chitosan (CS) and monochloroacetic acid under various conditions. N,O-CMCS electrospun was synthetized with the copolymer polyethylene oxide (PEO) to create nanofiber membranes showing a better specificity toward diversified contaminants depending on the pH of medium. The developed adsorbent was used to remove fluoxetine (FLX) from aqueous solutions. The new nanomaterial was characterised using FTIR, NMR, and SEM techniques. Sorption batch tests were carried out using high-performance liquid chromatography and ultraviolet diode array detector (HPLC-UV dAd) under controlled pH experimental conditions to determine the contaminant removal capacity of the nanomaterial. The promising adsorption results obtained with N,O-CMCS/PEO nanofibers are among the best ones obtained so far in comparison to other commercial and synthetized adsorbents tested for FLX’s adsorption. Kinetic experiments were also performed to investigate effects of contact times on the FLX adsorption. Experimental results were fitted to both common kinetic models pseudo-first and second order. Experiments on the National Ignition Facility show that multi-dimensional effects currently dominate the implosion performance. Low mode implosion symmetry and hydrodynamic instabilities seeded by capsule mounting features appear to be two key limiting factors for implosion performance. One reason these factors have a large impact on the performance of inertial confinement fusion implosions is the high convergence required to achieve high fusion *** tackle these problems, a predictable implosion platform is needed meaning experiments must trade-off high gain for performance. LANL has adopted three main approaches to develop a one-dimensional(1d) implosion platform where 1d means measured yield over the 1d clean calculation. A high adiabat, low convergence platform is being developed using beryllium capsules enabling larger case-to-capsule ratios to improve symmetry. The second approach is liquid fuel layers using wetted foam targets. With liquid fuel layers, the implosion convergence can be controlled via the initial vapor pressure set by the target fielding temperature. The last method is double shell targets. For double shells, the smaller inner shell houses the dT fuel and the convergence of this cavity is relatively small compared to hot spot ignition. However,double shell targets have a different set of trade-off versus advantages. details for each of these approaches are described.
