INTROdUCTION Project based learning(PBL)fully engages students in the subject area,promotes teamwork,transdisciplinary collaboration,allows student teams to engage and solve community design problems and can ultimately lead to broader student ***,however,presents significant curricular challenges,including project definition and meaningful student *** authors began the process of exploring PBL through a National Science Foundation Transformation Undergraduate Education in Science,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics(TUES)*** program was piloted for two semesters under the TUES award and has now completed its eighth semester overall operating as a special curricular track in parallel with an existing,traditional curricular program in Building *** four years of dedicated PBL program experience to inform their efforts,the authors are currently reworking the existing Building Science program curriculum to fully integrate a PBL capstone during the senior year while establishing a clear curricular path,creating a sound base of projects,and maintaining resource limits that include,but are not limited to,facilities,materials and *** this paper,the authors discuss their successes and difficulties with imple-menting PBL in an undergraduate design and construction program by reviewing twelve years of both spontaneous and planned project based PBL experiences in an undergraduate design and construction program.

Naproxen-induced liver injury

BACKGROUNd: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIds) have been reported to induce liver injury. Patterns of the injury usually range from mild elevations of liver enzymes to sometimes severe fulminant hepatic failure. Likewise, naproxen is a propionic acid derivative NSAId that was introduced in 1980 and has been available as an over-the- counter medication since 1994, but has rarely been reported to cause liver injury. METHOdS: We treated a 30-year-old woman with jaundice and intractable pruritus that developed shortly after taking naproxen. We reviewed the medical history and liver histopathology of the patient as well as all previously published case reports of naproxen-associated liver toxicity in the English language literature. RESULTS: The liver biochemical profile of the patient revealed a mixed cholestasis and hepatitis pattern. Consecutive liver biopsies demonstrated focal lobular inflammation, hepatocyte drop-out, and a progressive loss of the small interlobular bile ducts (ductopenia). The biopsy performed two years after onset of the disease showed partial recovery of a small number of bile ducts; however, 10 years passed before the biochemical profile returned to near normal. CONCLUSIONS: Naproxen-associated liver toxicity remains a rare entity, but should be considered in any patient presenting with cholestasis shortly after its use. Liver injury is most commonly seen in a mixed pattern characterized by cholestasis and hepatitis. The resulting liver damage may take years to resolve.

Where physics meets chemistry： Thin film deposition from reactive plasmas

Functionalising surfaces using polymeric thin films is an industrially important field. One technique for achieving nanoscale, controlled surface functionalization is plasma deposition. Plasma deposition has advantages over other surface engineering processes, including that it is solvent free, substrate and geometry independent, and the surface properties of the film can be designed by judicious choice of precursor and plasma conditions. despite the utility of this method, the mechanisms of plasma polymer growth are generally unknown, and are usually described by chemical （i.e., radical） pathways. In this review, we aim to show that plasma physics drives the chemistry of the plasma phase, and surface-plasma interactions. For example, we show that ionic species can react in the plasma to form larger ions, and also arrive at surfaces with energies greater than 1000 kJ·mol^-1 （〉10 eV） and thus facilitate surface reactions that have not been taken into account previously. Thus, improving thin film deposition processes requires an understanding of both physical and chemical processes in plasma.

Geographic patterns of plant-herbivore interactions are driven by soil fertility

Aims Geographic patterns of the intensity of plant herbivory in relation to climate factors have garnered little general support and appear to be species ***,plant-herbivore interactions are also driven by resource availability,such as soil nutrient content,and it remains unclear whether broad-scale variation in soil factors is reflected in herbivore consumption rates across species’***,we know little of how intraspecific variation in tissue quality associates with edaphic and climatic factors,and how this variation controls herbivore *** resource availability hypothesis(RAH)predicts that plant individuals growing in low-resource environments will have lower leaf nutritional quality and more constitutive defenses,which will result in lower rates of leaf *** We collected leaves from the old-field dominant species,Solidago altissima L.,from 20 sites across 10 degrees of latitude in the Eastern USA to determine the percentage leaf area consumed by insect *** obtained soil and climate data for each site,as well as plant functional and defensive traits,including specific leaf area(SLA),leaf carbon:nitrogen(C:N),and trichome *** Findings Although we found no significant latitudinal trend of leaf consump-tion rate,there was strong evidence that leaf herbivory decreased with leaf C:N and trichome density,which themselves decreased with soil N,supporting our hypothesis that the RAH applies for intraspecific variation across spatial ***,high precipitation seasonality and soil nitrogen predicted decreased *** results suggest that spatial variation in herbivory can be driven by factors other than herbivore communities and climatic gradients,and that bottom-up processes,where plant traits and soil fertility control leaf consumption,must be incorporated into spatial predictions of herbivory.

Crustacean parasites associated with hermit crabs from the western Mediterranean Sea,with first documentation of egg predation by the burrowing barnacle Trypetesa lampas(Cirripedia:Acrothoracica:Trypetesidae)

Parasitic isopods(family Bopyridae)and burrowing barnacles(family Trypetesidae)infesting hermit crabs were investigated from shallow subtidal collections made along the southeastern coast of Spain in 2009.A total of 713 specimens of Clibanarius erythropus(Latreille,1818)and 82 Calcinus tubularis(L.,1767)were *** shells and worm tubes inhabited by hermit crabs were collected by hand while snorkeling and were cracked to determine host species,size,sex and presence of *** species of bopyrid isopods were found on ***:the branchial parasite Bopyrissa fraiseii(Carayon,1943)and the abdominal parasite Parathelges cardonae Codreanu and Codreanu in Codreanu,*** all *** examined,Bopyrissa fraiseii was found on 0.6%of hermit crabs and *** was found on 0.3%.A redescription of *** is provided and the species is documented with light and scanning electron microscopy for the first *** Calcinus tubularis harbored parasitic isopods,but one specimen was parasitized by an unidentified rhizocephalan barnacle of the genus Septosaccus(1.2%).The burrowing barnacle Trypetesa lampas(Hancock,1849)was found associated with both hermit crab species and evidence of predation on host eggs by this barnacle is shown for the first *** lampas was found in 4.2%of the shells *** present study expands our knowledge of the parasite fauna of hermit crabs from the Mediterranean Sea and indicates that additional research is needed to determine the impact of trypetesid egg predators on hermit crab populations.

Sorption of inorganic nanoparticles in woven cellulose fabrics

Titanium dioxide was deposited from aqueous suspension onto cellulosic surfaces. Titania was sourced from degussa （P25TM, 70：30 anatase：rutile）. dry uptake of particles was shown to be rapid and dominant with one-third of the deposition occurring in less than 30 s and over one-half in the first minute. Isotherms were recorded to compare the rate of titanium deposition on dry and pre-wetted cotton. In the dry case uptake reached a maximum in 30 min whereas in the pre-wetted case the uptake was seen to continue beyond 180 min. A broad trend of higher deposition occurring at lower pH was seen, corresponding to the region where surface charges were opposite and thus attractive. dry pickup was less significant at high pH. The response to varying ionic strength was complex and was attributed to the combined effect of charge screening, particle aggregation and consequent particle entrapment or occlusion. Titania deposition into the interstices of woven cotton sheets resulted in the formation of inorganic, nanoparticulate skeletons which could be isolated by controlled combustion of the cellulose and thus cotton was suggested to have potential for the templated synthesis of high surface area semiconductor materials.

Prediction of esophageal and gastric histology by macroscopic diagnosis during upper endoscopy in pediatric celiac disease

AIMTo determine the sensitivity of macroscopic appearance for predicting histological diagnosis at sites other than duodenum in pediatric celiac disease (Cd).METHOdSEndoscopic and histologic findings in pediatric patients undergoing upper endoscopy for first-time diagnosis of Cd at Stollery Children’s Hospital from 2010-2012 were retrospectively *** charts from 140 patients were reviewed. Esophageal and gastric biopsies were taken in 54.3% and 77.9% of patients, respectively. Endoscopic appearance was normal in the esophagus and stomach in 75% and 86.2%. Endoscopic esophageal diagnoses were eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) (11.8%), esophagitis (7.9%), glycogenic acanthosis (1.3%) and non-specific abnormalities (3.9%). Endoscopic gastric diagnoses were gastritis (8.3%), pancreatic rest (0.9%), and non-specific abnormalities (4.6%). Histology was normal in 76.3% of esophageal and 87.2% of gastric specimens. Abnormal esophageal histology was EE (10.5%), esophagitis (10.5%), glycogenic acanthosis (1.3%) and non-specific (1.3%). Gastritis was reported in 12.8% of specimens. Sensitivity and specificity of normal endoscopy for predicting normal esophageal histology was 86.2% and 61.1%, and for normal gastric histology was 87.4% and 21.4%.CONCLUSIONIn the absence of macroscopic abnormalities, routine esophageal and gastric biopsy during endoscopy for pediatric Cd does not identify major pathologies. These findings have cost and time saving implications for clinical practice.

The Neglected State of Organizational-Level Turnover Studies in the Chinese Context： A Call for Research

In this essay, the authors discuss the neglected state of organizational-level turnover research in the Chinese context. They provide a brief overview of the importance of turnover research in the organizational sciences, highlight the role of performance-related turnover rates research, and outline general theories and findings that appear in the Western and English-language literature. This evidence is compared with a dearth of studies using samples of Chinese organizations and in Chinese-language journals. They conclude by calling for additional theory and empirical studies on turnover rates.

H_(2)mediated mixed culture microbial electrosynthesis for high titer acetate production from CO_(2)

Microbial electrosynthesis(MES)converts CO_(2)into value-added products such as volatile fatty acids(VFAs)with minimal energy use,but low production titer has limited scale-up and *** electron transfer via H_(2)on the MES cathode has shown a higher conversion rate than the direct biofilm-based approach,as it is tunable via cathode potential control and accelerates electrosynthesis from CO_(2).Here we report high acetate titers can be achieved via improved in situ H_(2)supply by nickel foam decorated carbon felt cathode in mixed community MES *** concentration of 12.5 g L^(-1)was observed in 14 days with nickel-carbon cathode at a poised potential of-0.89 V(*** hydrogen electrode,SHE),which was much higher than cathodes using stainless steel(5.2 g L^(-1))or carbon felt alone(1.7 g L^(-1))with the same projected surface area.A higher acetate concentration of 16.0 g L^(-1)in the cathode was achieved over long-term operation for 32 days,but crossover was observed in batch operation,as additional acetate(5.8 g L^(-1))was also found in the abiotic anode *** observed the low Faradaic efficiencies in acetate production,attributed to partial H_(2)utilization for *** selective acetate production with high titer demonstrated in this study shows the H_(2)-mediated electron transfer with common cathode materials carries good promise in MES development.
