Functional responses of cougars(Puma concolor)in a multiple prey-species system

The study of predator-prey interactions is commonly analyzed using functional responses to gain an understanding of predation patterns and the impact they have on prey *** this,little is known about predator-prey systems with multiple prey species in sites near the *** we studied the functional response of cougars(Puma concolor)in relation to their main prey,armadillo(dasypus novemcinctus),coati(Nasua narica)and white-tailed deer(Odocoileus virginianus).Between 2004 and 2010,cougar scats were collected along 5 transects to estimate the consumption of different prey species.A relative abundance index(RAI)was calculated for each prey species and cougar using 18 camera *** compared Holling type I,II and III functional response models to determine patterns in prey consumption based on the relative abundance and biomass of each prey species *** 3 main prey species comprised 55%(armadillo),17%(coati)and 8%(white-tailed deer)of the *** I and II functional responses described consumption of the 2 most common prey species armadillos and coati similarly well,while a type I response best characterized consumption of white-tailed deer.A negative correlation between the proportions of armadillo versus coati and white-tailed deer biomass in cougar scats suggests switching to consume alternative prey,confirming high foraging plasticity of this *** work represents one of the few studies to compare functional responses across multiple prey species,combined with evidence for prey-switching at low densities of preferred prey.

In order to address the study of complex systems,the detection of patterns in their dynamics could play a key role in understanding their *** particular,global patterns are required to detect emergent concepts and trends,some of them of a qualitative *** concept analysis(FCA) is a theory whose goal is to discover and extract knowledge from qualitative data(organized in concept lattices).In complex environments,such as sport competitions,the large amount of information currently available turns concept lattices into complex *** authors analyze how to apply FCA reasoning in order to increase confidence in sports predictions by means of detecting regularities from data through the management of intuitive and natural attributes extracted from publicly available *** complexity of concept lattices-considered as networks with complex topological structure- is *** is applied to building a knowledge based system for confidence-based reasoning,which simulates how humans tend to avoid the complexity of concept networks by means of bounded reasoning skills.

Ozone forming potential and sulfur effects on in-use vehicles of the metropolitan area of Mexico City

The largest urban areas of Mexico cities have witnessed high levels of air pollution in the past few decades. The most important air pollutants are ozone and paniculate matter with levels that are still far above current air quality standard. In this work we studied exhaust and evaporative emissions of Mexico City metropolitan area （MAMC） vehicles using fuels in which sulfur content was varied from 89×10^-6 to 817×10^-6, and calculated the ozone forming potential of emissions as well as the specific reactivity of the exhaust for each average fleet-fuel combinations. data on emission levels were compared to those obtained in 2000 for the same vintage of vehicles. The almost twofold increase in emissions found could be due to degradation of the exhaust emissions control systems.

Photoelectrochemical CO_(2) electrolyzers: From photoelectrode fabrication to reactor configuration

The photoelectrochemical conversion of CO_(2) into value-added products emerges as an attractive approach to alleviate climate change. One of the main challenges in deploying this technology is, however, the development and optimization of(photo)electrodes and photoelectrolyzers. This review focuses on the fabrication processes, structure, and characterization of(photo)electrodes, covering a wide range of fabrication techniques, from rudimentary to automated fabrication processes. The work also highlights the most relevant features of(photo)electrodes, with special emphasis on how to measure and optimize them. Finally, the review analyses the integration of(photo)electrodes in different photoelectrolyzer architectures, analyzing the most recent research work that comprises photocathode, photoanode,photocathode-photoanode, and tandem photoelectrolyzer configurations to ideally achieve self-sustained CO_(2) conversion systems. Overall, comprehensive guidelines are provided for future advancements in developing effective devices for CO_(2) conversion, bridging the gap towards the use of sunlight as the unique energy input and practical applications.

Evaluation of drought indices to identify tolerant genotypes in common bean bush(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

drought is one of the major abiotic stresses often causing negative impacts on bean crops in the Andean region in Colombia. An experiment under the greenhouse conditions was carried out to assess the effect of a prolonged drought period(15 days) at two different phenological stages(vegetative or reproductive) on grain yield and yield components of five bush bean cultivars(ICA-Cerinza, Bachue, NUA35, Bianca, and Bacatá). Nine tolerance indices including stress susceptibility index(SSI), tolerance(TOL), mean productivity(MP), geometric mean productivity(GMP), stress tolerance index(STI), yield stability index(YSI), yield index(YI), Harmonic mean(HM), and drought sensitivity index(dSI) were calculated based on grain yield under non-stressed(YP) and drought(YS) conditions. Based on the different drought indices, genotypes ICA-Cerinza and NUA35 had the best performance under drought conditions in both studied phases, which reflected in a reduction of grain yield ~≤40%. The biplot analysis also showed a clear superiority of these two genotypes at both phenological stages. Results also showed that SSI was more effective to identify genotypes less affected by drought. The above results allowed us to conclude that ICA-Cerinza and NUA35 may be considered for agricultural areas where long periods of water deficit are expected and can be used in breeding programs for drought tolerance.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)remains the third most prevalent cancer disease and involves a multi-step process in which intestinal cells acquire malignant *** is well established that the appearance of distal metastasis in CRC patients is the cause of a poor prognosis and treatment ***,in the last decades,CRC aggressiveness and progression have been attributed to a specific cell population called CRC stem cells(CCSC)with features like tumor initiation capacity,self-renewal capacity,and acquired multidrug *** data highlight the concept of this cell subtype as a plastic entity that has a dynamic status and can be originated from different types of cells through genetic and epigenetic *** alterations are modulated by complex and dynamic crosstalk with environmental factors by paracrine *** is known that in the tumor niche,different cell types,structures,and biomolecules coexist and interact with cancer cells favoring cancer growth and ***,these components constitute the tumor microenvironment(TME).Most recently,researchers have also deepened the influence of the complex variety of microorganisms that inhabit the intestinal mucosa,collectively known as gut microbiota,on *** TME and microorganisms participate in inflammatory processes that can drive the initiation and evolution of *** in the last decade,crucial advances have been made concerning to the synergistic interaction among the TME and gut microorganisms that condition the identity of CCSC,the data exposed in this review could provide valuable insights into the biology of CRC and the development of new targeted therapies.

COVId-19 and Indirect Liver Injury:A Narrative Synthesis of the Evidence

The liver is frequently affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)*** most common manifestations are mildly elevated alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase,with a prevalence of 16-53%among *** with severe coronavirus disease 2019(COVId-19)seem to have higher rates of acute liver dysfunction,and the presence of abnormal liver tests at admission signifies a higher risk of severe disease during *** with chronic liver diseases also have a higher risk of severe disease and mortality(mainly seen in patients with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease).Several pathways of damage have been proposed in the liver involvement of COVId-19 patients;although,the end-cause is most likely *** liver tests have been attributed to the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors in SARS-CoV-2 *** enzyme is expressed widely in cholangiocytes and less in *** factors attributed to liver damage include drug-induced liver injury,uncontrolled release of proinflammatory molecules(“cytokine storm”),pneumonia-associated hypoxia,and direct damage by the *** steatosis,vascular thrombosis,fibrosis,and inflammatory features(including Kupffer cell hyperplasia)are the most common liver histopathological findings in deceased COVId-19 patients,suggesting important indirect mechanisms of liver *** this translational medicinebased narrative review,we summarize the current data on the possible indirect mechanisms involved in liver damage due to COVId-19,the histopathological findings,and the impact of these mechanisms in patients with chronic liver disease.

Experimental study on fly ash capture mercury in flue gas

Systematic experiments were conducted on a fixed-bed reactor to investigate the interaction between fly ash and mercury,the results implied that fly ash can capture mercury *** different fly ashes,the unburned carbon in the FA2 and FA3 fly ashes has the highest mercury capture capacity,up to 10.3 and 9.36 μg/g,respectively,which is close to that of commercial activated *** is no obvious relationship between mercury content and carbon content or BET surface area of fly *** classification standard was applied to distinguish fly ash carbon *** content is not the only variable that controls mercury capture on fly ash,there are likely significant differences in the mercury capture capacities of the various carbon *** capture capacity mainly depends on the content of anisotropy carbon particles with porous network structure.
