Constructed wetlands （CWs） are engineered systems that utilize natural systems including wetland vegetations, soils, and their associated microbial assemblages to assist in treating wastewater. The kinetic adsorption of ammonium nitrogen （NH＋-N） by CW substrate materials such as blast furnace slag （BFS）, zeolite, ceramsite, vermiculite, gravel, paddy soil, red soil, and turf, was investigated using batch experiments and kinetic adsorption isotherms. Both Freundlich and Lang- muir isotherms could adequately predict the NH＋-N adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacities of NH＋-N, estimated from the Langmuir isotherm, ranked as： zeolite （33 333.33 mg kg^-1）〉 turf （29274.01 mg kg^-1）〉 BFS （5000 mg kg^-1）〉 vermiculite （3333.33 mg kg^-1）〉 gravel （769.23 mg kg^-1）〉 paddy soil （588.24 mg kg^-1）〉 red soil （555.56 mg kg^-1）〉 ceramsite （107.53 mg kg^-1）. Some properties of the substrate materials, including bulk density, specific gravity, hydraulic conductivity, uniformity coefficient （K60）, curvature coefficient （Co）, organic matter, pH, exchangeable （or active） Cu, Fe, Zn and Mn, total Cu, and Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, Pb and Ca, had negative correlations with NH＋-N adsorption. Other properties of the substrate materials like particle diameter values of D10, 030 and 060 （the diameters of particle sizes of a substrate material at which 10%, 30% and 60%, respectively, of the particles pass through the sieve based on the accumulative frequency）, cation exchange capacity （CEC）, exchangeable （or active） Ca and Mg, and total K and Mg had positive correlations with NH＋-N adsorption. In addition, active K and Na as well as the total Na had significant positive correlations with NH＋-N adsorption. This information would be useful for selection of suitable substrate materials for CWs.

Performance of hybrid constructed wetland systems for treating septic tank effluent

The integrated wetland systems were constructed by combining horizontal-flow and vertical-flow bed, and their purification efficiencies for septic tank effluent were detected when the hydraulic retention time （HRT） was 1 d, 3 d, 5 d under different seasons. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of the organics, phosphorus were steady in the hybrid systems, but the removal efficiency of total nitrogen was not steady due to high total nitrogen concentration in the septic tank effluent. The average removal rates of COD （chemical oxygen demand） were 89%, 87%, 83%, and 86% in summer, autumn, winter and spring, respectively, and it was up to 88%, 85%, 73%, and 74% for BOD5 （5 d biochemical oxygen demand） removal rate in four seasons. The average removal rates of TP （total phosphorous） could reach up to 97%, 98%, 95%, 98% in four seasons, but the removal rate of TN （total nitrogen） was very low. The results of this study also indicated that the capability of purification was the worst in winter. Cultivating with plants could improve the treated effluent quality fTom the hybrid systems. The results of the operation of the horizontal-flow and vertical-flow cells （hybrid systems） showed that the removal efficiencies of the organics, TP and TN in horizontal-flow and vertical-flow cells were improved significantly with the extension of HRT under the same season. The removal rate of 3 d HRT was obviously higher than that of 1 d HRT, and the removal rate of 5 d HRT was better than that of 3 d HRT, but the removal efficiency was not very obvious with the increment of HRT. Therefore, 3 d HRT might be recommended in the actual operation of the hybrid systems for economic and technical reasons.

Modified Da-chai-hu Decoction(MDD), a traditional Chinese medicinal formulation, which was empirically generated from Da-chai-hu decoction, has been utilized to treat severe acute pancreatitis(SAP) for decades. The aim of the present study was to explore its potential organprotective mechanism in SAP. In the present study, rat SAP model was induced by retrograde injection of 3.5% sodium taurocholate into the biliopancreatic duct, MDD(23.35 g/kg body weight, twelve times the clinical dose) were orally given at 2 h before and 10 h after injection. At 12 h after model induction, blood was taken from vena cava for analysis of amylase, diamine oxidase(DAO), pulmonary surfactant protein-A(SP-A), and C-reactive protein(CRP). Histopathological change of pancreas, ileum and lung was assayed by H&E staining, myeloperoxidase(MPO) activity were determinated using colorimetric assay, and the expressions of occludin and nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB) were detected by real-time RT-PCR and western blot, respectively. In addition, the tissue concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukin-1β(IL-1β), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(EliSA). The results showed that in SAP rats, MDD significantly alleviated histopathological damage, depressed the MPO activity and the concentrations of TNF-α, IL-1β, and MCP-1 of pancreas, ileum and lung, and reduced the serum levels of amylase [(3283.4±585.5) U·L^(-1) vs(5626.4±795.1) U·L^(-1)], DAO[(1100.1±334.3) U·L^(-1) vs(1666.4±525.3) U·L^(-1)] and CRP [(7.6±1.2) μg·mL^(-1) vs(17.8±3.8) μg·mL^(-1)]. However, the serum SP-A concentration [(106.1±16.6) pg·mL^(-1) vs(90.1±14.9) pg·mL^(-1)] was elevated when treated SAP rats with MDD. Furthermore, MDD increased the occludin expression and reduced the NF-κB expression in pancreas, ileum and lung of SAP rats. Objective: To investigate the factors favoring a positive prognosis for advanced primary peritoneal carcinoma (PPC). Methods: Twenty-four cases meeting the criteria for PPC were analyzed retrospectively for the clinicopathologic profiles. Im- munohistochemistry was used to determine the expressions of p53, Top2α, Ki-67 and Her-2/neu. Then all these clinicopa- thological factors and molecular markers were correlated with the prognosis. Results: There were 15 cases of primary peritoneal serous papillary carcinoma (PPSPC), 6 cases of mixed epithelial carcinoma (MEC) and 3 cases of malignant mixed Mullerian tumor (MMMT). All patients underwent cytoreductive surgery with optimal debulking achieved in 3 cases. Among those re- ceiving first-line chemotherapy, 13 patients received the TP regimen (paclitaxel-cisplatin or carboplatin) and 7 patients received the PAC regimen (cisplatin-doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide). The median overall survival of all patients was 42 months, while the breakdown for survival time for patients with PPSPC, MMT and MEC was 44, 13 and 19 months, respectively. The expressions of p53, Top2α and Ki-67 were all demonstrated in 11 cases respectively. None showed the expression of Her-2/neu. There were significant differences in the median survival between patients with PPSPC and those with MMMT (44 months vs 13 months, P<0.05), also between patients receiving TP combination and those receiving the PAC regimen (75 months vs 28 months, P<0.05). Another significant difference in the median progression-free survival (PFS) was identified between patients with positive p53 immunostaining and those with negative p53 immunostaining (15 months vs 47 months, P<0.05), whereas age, menopausal status, residual tumor size and the other molecular factors did not significantly impact survival. The novel bimetallic Sn-Im/Al2O3 catalysts prepared by three methods for NO reduction by propene were investigated. The results showed that the catalytic activity was enhanced significantly in the presence of H2O on sol-gel catalyst, and the maximum NO conversion increased from 46% to 92%, even in the presence of 100 ppm SO2, NO conversion was still 80%.

A new zinc coordination polymer（CP） {[Zn1.5（ttb）0.5（phen）（H2O）]·2 H2O}n（1）,（H6ttb = 3,4,5-tricarboxyl-（3?,4?,5?-tricarboxylazophenyl）benzene, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline）, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray determination, IR and thermogravimetric analysis（TGA）. CP 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c with a = 12.402（3）, b = 15.231（3）, c = 22.233（4） ?, β = 94.388（3）°, Zn1.5C21H16N3O9, Mr = 552.42, V = 4187.3（15） ?3, Dc = 1.753 g/cm3, F（000） = 2240, μ = 1.795 mm-1, S = 1.041, GOF = 1.041, Rint = 0.0169, 2.36° 2σ（I）. The completely deprotonated（ttb）6- ion in 1 adopts an octadentate coordination mode（μ8-η2-η1-η1-η1-η1-η2）. Four of the carboxyl groups are coordinated with four zinc ions by monodentate, respectively. While the other two carboxyl groups are coordinated with four zinc ions by bidentate, respectively. So, CP 1 possesses a 3 D network structure cross-linked by（ttb）6-ion. The XRD, UV and photoluminescence properties of CP 1 were also studied. Remarkably, 1 exhibits photocatalytic activities for the degradation of dye（MO） under UV light irradiation and shows good stabilities towards UV-light photocatalysis.
