A collaborative study of human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies has b een carried out from 1993 to 2000 and includes data from 10 national registries, the majority in Western europe. In this study, we present analyses of predictor s of survival in sporadic (n = 2304), iatrogenic (n = 106) and variant Creutzfel dt Jakob disease (n = 86) and in cases associated with mutations of the prion p rotein gene (n=278), including Gerstmann Strussler Scheinker syndrome (n = 24) and fat al familial insomnia (n = 41). Ove.a.l survival for each disease type was assess ed by the .Kaplan Meier method and the multivariate.a.alyses by the Cox proport ional hazards model. In sporadic disease, longer survival was corre.a.ed with yo unger age.a. onset of illness, fe.a.e gender, codon 129 heterozygosity, presence of CSF 14-3-3 protein and type 2a prion protein type. The.a.ility to predict survival based on patient covariates is important for diagnosis and counselling, and the characterization of the survival distributions, in the.a.sence of the.a.py, will be.a. important starting point for the.a.sessment of potential the.a.eu tic agents in the future.

Objectives: The most common familial early onset dementia mutations are found in the genes involved in Alzheimer’ s disease; the.a.yloid precursor protein (APP) and the presenilin 1 and 2 (PSeN1 and 2) genes; the prion protein gene (PRNP) may be involved. Methods: Following identification of a two octapeptide repeat insertion in PRNP, we conducted a me.a.analysis to investigate the re.a.ion of number of PRNP octapeptide repeats with age.a. disease onset and duration of illness; identifying 55 patients with PRNP octapeptide repeat insertions. We used a linear mixed effects model to assess the re.a.ion of number of repeats with age.a. disease onset, and studied the effect of the number of inserted octapeptide repeats on disease duration with a Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Results: We found an increasing number of repeats associated with younger age.a. onset (p e disease decreased significantly with the length of the octapeptide repeat (p en adjusting for age.a. onset. Conclusions: Our findings showsignificant inverse.a.sociations of the length of the PRNP octapeptide repeat with age.a. disease onset and disease duration in the spongiform encephalopathies.

Air quality improvement in Los Angeles Perspectives for developing cities

Air quality improvement in Los Angeles, California is reviewed with an emphasis on aspects that may inform air quality policy formulation in developing cities. In the mid-twentieth century the.a.r quality in Los Angeles was degraded to an extent comparable to the worst found in developing cities today; ozone exceeded 600 ppb and annual ave.a.e particulate matter 〈 10 μm reached -150 μg.m -3. Today＇s air quality is much better due to very effective emission controls; e.g., modem automobilcs emit about 1% of the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emitted by vehicles of 50 years ago. An overview is given of the emission control efforts in Los Angeles and their impact on anabient concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants： the costs and health benefits of these controls arc briefly summarized, Today＇s developing cities have new challenges that are discussed： the effects of regional pollution transport are much greater in countries with very high population densities： often very large current populations must be supplied with goods and services even while economic development and air quality concerns are.a.dressed; and many of currently developing cities arc located in or close to the tropics where photochemical processing of pollution is expected to be more rapid than at higher latitudes. The.a.r quality issues of Beijing are briefly compared and contrasted with those of Los Angeles, and the opportunities for co-benefits for climate.a.d air quality improvement are pointed out.
