Gender Roles in the Utilization and Challenges in the management of mangrove Forests in Casiguran, Aurora, Philippines

mangrove utilization and management were observed done by men and women depending on their needs and priorities in Casiguran, Aurora. This study, therefore, tried to investigate the gender roles in the utilization and management of mangrove forests, the existing mangrove management practices and their challenges, and the relationship between gender and mangrove resources management. A mixed-method approach was used and data were obtained through triangulation. Respondents were obtained through snowball sampling and interviewed using a structured questionnaire with a few open-ended questions. Results revealed that the majority of the respondents were women (60.7%) and residents of Brgy. Esteves (52.5%) live within or near the mangrove forest. mostly married (59%) who were providing food and income for the family. They utilized mangrove woods (58.20%) with an average quantity of less than 10 board feet (34.4%) for cooking (40.2%). Roots were utilized in minimal amounts (2.50%) for mythical, medicine, and cork purposes. mollusks (93.44%), commonly bivalves (93.4%), were primarily gleaned by women for food consumption (93.4%) and as a source of income (93. 61%). On the other hand, catching of crabs (57.4%) for consumption (56.6%) and as a source of income (14.8%) and catching of fish (31.1%) for consumption (27.9%) were done by men. Both genders were involved in mangrove management practices, although only 65% of them had actual involvement in mangrove planting, 19% in mangrove nursery development and maintenance, and 16% in mangrove plantation maintenance. Challenges in management include low survival rate of planted mangroves (33%), lack of maintenance activity (20%), and lack of funds for mobilization (20%). A chi-square test of independence revealed that both men and women have no significant difference in their involvement in nursery establishment and maintenance, mangrove planting, and plantation management.

The HLP mutation confers enhanced resistance to leafrust in different wheat genetic backgrounds

In several plant species, lesionmimic mutants simulate the diseaseresistance response in the absence of pathogens. Interestingly, some of these mutants confer broadspectrum resistance to diverse pathogens. We previously demonstrated that the HLP (hypersensitivelike phenotype) mutant of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) exhibited spontaneous hypersensitive response (HR) in the absence of any pathogen input. However, when HLP plants showing HR phenotype were challenged with leafrust (Puccinia triticina) they were more resistant than plants of the motherline of comparable developmental stage that did not show spontaneous HR, suggesting that the HLP mutation may confer enhanced resistance to the fungus. In this paper we validate the aforementioned finding in several wheat genetic backgrounds. Two way crosses were performed among the HLP mutant and eight wheat commercial stocks, and third backcross progenies with and without spontaneous HR were challenged with leafrust to investigate the response to the fungus. Backcrosses to cv. Sinvalocho m.A., the mother line, and cv. Purplestraw, highly susceptible to leafrust attack, were used as controls. Third backcross progenies of cvs. Sinvalocho m.A., Purplestraw, Buck Guaraní and Pro INTA Imperial bearing spontaneous HR phenotype were more resistant to the fungal pathogen than third backcross progenies that did not carry the HLP mutation. Other four wheat stocks were as healthy as the HLP mutant. As expected, backcross to the motherline demonstrated that the HLP mutation conferred an additional resistance to the already healthy performance displayed by the motherline at adult plant stage. The introgression of the HLP mutation conferred heigh tened leafrust resistance and caused no kernel weight reduction on the backcrossed progenies. Taken together, these data validate the direct use of this type of mutations in diseaseresis tance breeding.

Species Richness and Abundance of Bivalves and Gastropods in mangrove Forests of Casiguran, Aurora, Philippines

The diversity and abundance of bivalves and gastropods were studied from April to July 2015. Two sampling stations, Tinib and Esteves, in Casiguran, Aurora were selected based on the presence of mangrove forest, bivalves, gastropods, muddy substrate, and gleaners for the establishment of a transect line. Each station was laid with 100 meters transect line overlaid continuously with 2 m × 2 m quadrat along each transect. A total of 50 sampling units covering 0.02 ha area per sampling station were surveyed. The transect line recorded six species of bivalves distributed among five families and 12 species of gastropods belonging to eight families. Three species of bivalves and five species of gastropods were common to both sampling stations. However, Tinib station had most diverse species of bivalves (0.55) while Esteves station had most diverse species of gastropods (0.43). Both stations revealed m>Dendrostrea foliumm> (43%) (bivalve) and m>Cerithidea cingulatam> (93%) (gastropods) as most frequently occurring species. m>Dendostrea foliumm> also emerged as the densest (10,640 ind∙ha−1 and 6850 ind∙ha−1) and most abundant (58.52% and 77.84%) bivalve species. For gastropods, m>Terebralia sulcatam> (249,250 ind∙ha−1) was the densest and most abundant (96.97%) in Tinib while m>Terebralia palustrism> was the densest (747,050 ind∙ha−1) and most abundant (70.44%) in Esteves. BACKGROUND Patients with cirrhosis are at risk of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy,with resulting cardiac dysfunction and exercise *** minute walking test(6mWT)assesses functional status and predicts morbidity and mortality in cardiopulmonary *** To determine if it associates with mortality by analyzing 6mWT performance in patients with liver *** A cohort of 106 cirrhotic patients was evaluated in the outpatient setting with echocardiogram and 6mWT and follow up for one year to document hepatic decompensation and *** distance in meters was recorded at the end of 6 min(6mWD).RESULTS This cohort had a mean age of 51 years and 56%male;patients were staged as Child A in 21.7%,B 66%and C 12.3%.Walk distance inversely correlated with Child scores,and was significantly reduced as Child stages *** who died(10.4%)showed shorter mean 6mWD(P=0.006).Low 6mWD was an independent predictor of mortality(P=0.01).CONCLUSION 6mWT is a noninvasive inexpensive test whose result is related to Child scores and *** is useful to identify patients with liver cirrhosis at high risk of mortality for closer monitoring and potential early intervention.

Simultaneous Determination of Ten Endocrine Hormone Disrupters in Water Using SPE/LC-(ESI)mS-mS

The aim of this study was developed and validated an analytical method based on liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry after solid phase extraction to monitorizing ten endocrine hormone disrupters in Lisbon drinking water system. Natural and synthetic hormones (17-β-estradiol, ethinylestradiol, estriol, estrone, progesterone, mestranol and diethylstilbestrol) and some industrial products (4-n-nonylphenol, 4-tert-octylphenol and bisphenol A) were studied. mass spectrometer detection parameters were optimized, such as the best conditions for the precursor ion formation, namely cone voltage, when applying negative and positive electrospray ionization, and also collision energy for mRm1 and mRm2 transitions. The best conditions of the solid phase extraction (SPE) using Waters Oasis HLB (6 mL, 200 mg) and Isolute C18 (EC) (6 ml, 1000 mg) were also optimized. The method was validated through the application of several statistical tests and the uncertainty estimation of the analytical assay. This method showed a very good linear range for all the studied analytes with determination coefficients (r2) between 0.9962 and 0.9999 and coefficients of variation lower than 4%. There were no significant differences between recoveries obtained with the studied matrices, like groundwater, surface water and water for human consumption. In these matrices, the recovery values varied between 32 and 95%. The limits of method detection were between 0.28 and 22 ng/L. The validated method was applied for the analysis of water samples from the EPAL (Empresa Portuguesa das águas Livres, S.A.) water supply system including tap water, spring water, groundwater, and river water. Some target compounds (bisphenol A, progesterone, 4-tert-octylphenol, and 4-n-nonylphenol) were found in trace amounts in analysed waters.

Incidence and risk factors for potentially suboptimal serum concentrations of vancomycin during cardiac surgery

AImTo investigate the incidence and risk factors for van-comycin concentrations less than 10 mg/L during cardiac *** this prospective study, patients undergoing cardiac surgery received a single dose of 1000 mg of van-comycin. multiple arterial samples were drawn during surgery. Exclusion criteria were hepatic dysfunction; renal dysfunction; ongoing infectious diseases; solid or hematologic tumors; severe insulin-dependent diabetes; body mass index of 〈 17 or 〉 40 kg/m2; pregnancy or lactation; antibiotic, corticosteroid, orother immunosuppressive therapy; vancomycin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy in the previous2 wk; chemotherapy or radiation therapy in the previous 6 mo; allergy to vancomycin or cefazolin; drug abuse; cardiac surgery in the previous 6 mo; previous or scheduled organ transplantation; preoperative stay in the intensive care unit for more than 24 h; emergency procedure or lack of adequate preparation for surgery; and participation in another *** a 1-year period, 236 patients were enrolled, and a total of 1682 serum vancomycin concentrations （median 7/patient） were measured. No vancomycin levels under 10 mg/L were recorded in 122 out of 236 patients （52%）, and 114 out of 236 patients （48%） were found to have at least 1 serum sample with a vancomycin level 〈 10 mg/L; 54 out of 236 patients （22.9%） had at least 5 serum samples with a vancomycin level lower than 10 mg/L. Vancomycin infusion was administered for 60 min in 97 out of 236 patients （41%）. In 47 patients （20%）, the duration of infusion was longer than 60 min, and in 92 patients （39%） the duration of infusion was shorter than 60 min. The maximum concentration and area under the concentration-time curve were significantly higher in patients with no vancomycin levels less than 10 mg/L （ P 〈 0.001）.
