In this paper, an economic model was constructed to determine the optimal wolf population and distribution across the Northern rocky Mountains. Both ecological and economic concepts were incorporated in an implicitly spatial social welfare maximization problem. This interdisciplinary model relies on multiple data sources, including current wolf population and distribution information, opportunity cost to local landowners, and contingent valuation studies to determine willingness-to-pay for wolves. Economic models tend to externalize ecological concerns and ecological models often omit the complex human dimensions of conservation policy. Accordingly, this model can serve as a guide for integrating best practices from both fields. The model presented here is sufficiently general to apply to wolves in other ecosystems and to other highly interacting species such as beavers and bison. The Northern rocky Mountain wolf was used as an example of how this economic model works, but this model can be applied far more broadly.

Air pollution causes deleterious effects on human health with aerosols being among the most polluting *** objective of this work is the characterization of the PM2.5 and PM10 aerosol mass in the *** methods of analysis include WD-XrF and *** were correlated with meteorological information and air mass trajectories(model HYSPlIT)by multivariate analysis.A morphological structural analysis was also carried out to identify the probable sources of atmospheric aerosols in the city of Sao Jose do rio Preto,*** mean mass concentration values obtained were 24.54 μg/m^3 for PM10,above the WHO annual standard value of 20 μg/m^3 and 10.88 μg/m^3 for PM2.5 whose WHO recommended limit is10 μg/m^***-XrF analysis of the samples revealed Si and Al as major components of the coarse *** the fine fraction,the major elements were Al and *** SEM-FEG characterization allowed identifying the morphology of the particles in agglomerates,ellipsoids and filaments in the PM10,besides spherical in the *** analysis by EDS corroborated WD-XrF results,identifying the crustal elements,aluminosilicates and elements of anthropogenic origin in the coarse *** the fine fraction crustal elements were also identified;aluminosilicates,black carbon and spherical particles(C and O) originating from combustion processes were *** use of multivariate analysis to correlate air mass trajectories with the results of the morpho-structural characterization of the particulate matter allowed confirmation of the complex composition of the particles resulting from the combination of both local and long-distance sources.

Traditional rural social-ecological systems(SES)share many features which are crucial for sus-tainable *** European countries such as romania,are still rich in traditional cultural ***,these landscapes are increasingly under internal(e.g.,people’s aspirations toward western socioeconomic ideals)and external(institutional changes,globalization of the commodity market,connectivity with other cultures)***,understanding the ways how traditional SES navi-gated past and more recent changes is of crucial importance in getting insights about the future trajectory of these ***,we present the rural SES from the Saxon region of Transylvania through the lens of institutional transitions which happened in the past century in this *** show that the rural SES went through episodic collapses and renewals,their cyclic dynamic being related to the episodic chang-es of the higher level formal *** episodic collapses and renewals created a social-ecolog-ical momentum for the sustainability of these *** we recognize that policy effectiveness depends on institutional stability(and institutions are unstable and prone to collapses),maintaining those social-ecological system properties which can assure navigation of societies through the challenges imposed by global changes should be in the heart of every governance *** properties includes wide extent of native vegetation,fertile soils,wide range of provisioning ecosystem services,genuine links between people and landscapes and knowledge about the social-ecological *** features could provide important capitals and memory elements for the(re)emergence of social-ecological systems(old or new).

Ecological succession of benthic organisms on niche-type artificial reefs

As part of efforts to restore fishery resources and recover damaged coastal ecosystems,artificial reefs are often anchored on the seafloor in coastal zones,to provide new habitats for marine *** aim of the study was to describe the structure of a community of benthic invertebrates colonising a niche-type artificial reef(AATN in Spanish).Nine structures were anchored at depths of 16±1.5 m for 99 weeks(22 months)in the Area of Benthic resource Management and Exploitation(AMErB)in coastal waters of the region of Bio Bio,*** results showed that,at 3 months from submersion of the NTAr,much of the artificial substrate remained bare and there were only low levels of specimens of Balanus ***,showing mean coverage of 11.26%,and even lower proportions of rhodophyta,with mean coverage of 0.34%.At 6 months,the presence of hydrozoans was seen,decreasing the coverage of the barnacles,which was aided further at 8 months with the arrival of barnacle predatory *** 8 months,new benthic invertebrates appeared and competed for the *** included sponges and *** 99 weeks,the hydrozoans dominated the substrate,followed by barnacles and rhodophyta,the first colonising organisms,leading to colonisation by motile macro-invertebrates,mainly consisting of crustaceans,echinoderms and *** AATN artificial system provides an ideal substrate for the development of early ecological succession and the use of this technology should be feasible in the recovery process of habitat damaged by anthropogenic actions and climate change.

In the last three decades,the understanding of the renin angiotensin system(rAS)has been changed by the discoveries of functional local systems,novel biologically active peptides,additional specific receptors,alternative pathways of angiotensin(Ang)?Ⅱ?generation,and new roles for enzymes and precursor components other than those in Ang?Ⅱ?*** this regard,the discovery that Ang-(1-7)opposes the pressor,proliferative,pro-fibrotic,and pro-inflammatory effects mediated by Ang?Ⅱ?has contributed to the realization that the rAS is composed of two *** first axis consists of the angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE),with Ang?Ⅱ?as the end product,and the angiotensin type 1(AT1)receptor as the main effector mediating the biological actions of Ang?Ⅱ.The second axis results from ACE2-mediated hydrolysis of Ang?Ⅱ,leading to the production of Ang-(1-7),with the Mas receptor as the main effector conveying the vasodilatory,antiproliferative,anti-fibrotic,and anti-inflammatory effects of Ang-(1-7).Experimental and clinical studies have shown that both axes of the rAS may take part in the pathogenesis of liver *** this manuscript,we summarize the current evidence regarding the role of rAS in hepatic cirrhosis and its complications,including hemodynamic changes and hepatorenal *** therapeutic potential of the modulation of rAS molecules in liver diseases is also discussed.

During spinal fusion surgery,angled screw insertion can provide a more favorable stress distribution reducing failure events(screw breakage and loosening).Finite element(FE)analysis can be employed for identifying the optimal insertion path,preventing stress concentrations,and ensuring a lower failure *** this work,a patient-specific FE model of l4 vertebra,virtually implanted with two pedicle screws,was obtained from diagnostic images and numerically *** elastic,inhomogeneous,and isotropic material properties were assigned to bone based on density distributions reconstructed from the medical *** mechanical response of the screws-vertebra system was analyzed through a progressive damage procedure,considering a stress-based *** screws insertion angles were simulated,as well as physiological loading *** each loading case,screw orientation influences the fracture mechanism(i.e.,brittle or ductile one),as well as the fracture pattern and ***,stresses in trabecular bone and pedicle screws are significantly affected by the screw *** caudomedial trajectory indicates the most safe case,significantly reducing the stress concentrations in both trabecular bone and *** findings aim to furnish a useful indication to surgeons regarding the screws insertion angle,further reducing the failure risk and improving the clinical outcome of the fixation procedure.

In recent years,hard carbon materials have gained significant interest as anode materials for Na-ion *** waste is considered one of the most interesting,renewable,available,and cost-effective precursor to obtain hard carbon(HC);however,HC properties must be finely tuned to achieve performance comparable to those provided by li-ion *** this work,three biomass wastes(coconut shells,walnut shells,and corn silk) were evaluated as potential precursors for HC preparation involving a pyrolysis process and subsequent acid washing to remove the inorganic *** obtained materials exhibited low and similar specific surface areas(resented different structures and surface *** walnut shell HC possessed a lower amount of inorganic impurities and oxygen-based functional groups compared to the coconut shell and corn silk HCs,leading to higher initial coulombic efficiency(iCE).The structural organization was higher in the case of the walnut shell HC,while the corn silk HC revealed a heterogeneous structure combining both highly disordered carbon and localized graphitized *** HCs delivered high initial reversible capacities between 293 and 315 mAh g^(-1) at 50 mA g^(-1) current rate,which remained rather stable during long-term *** best capacity(293 mAh g^(-1) after 100 charge/discharge cycles) and highest capacity retention(93%) was achieved in walnut HCs in half-cells,which could be associated with its higher sp2 C content,better organized structure,and fewer *** "adsorption-insertion" Na storage mechanism is suggested based on several *** walnut HCs exhibited an attractive energy density of 279 Wh/kg when tested in full cells.
