In this paper, an economic model.was constructed to determine the optimal.wol. popul.tion and distribution across the Northern Rocky Mountains. Both ecol.gical.and economic concepts were incorporated in an impl.citl. spatial.social.wel.are maximization probl.m. Purpose: The primary aim of this paper is to design, create, and improve functional.and artificial.Bruch’s membranes (BM) using bioengineering techniques, which can be appl.ed in the treatment of macul.pathies by supporting the growth and maintenance of retinal.pigment epithel.um (RPE) cel.s, thereby potential.y enabl.ng subretinal.impl.ntation in patients. Methods: We fabricated by el.ctrospinning ul.rathin 3D nanofibrous membranes from Pol.caprol.ctone (PCl., and different concentrations of gel.tin (5%, 15% and 30%). ARPE-19 cel.s were seeded onto these artificial.membranes. MTT assays were performed in order to eval.ate ARPE-19 cel. viabil.ty and cytotoxicity. IF assays were real.zed to observe the ARPE-19 cel.s onto each membrane. Ul.rastructure of the modified Bruch’s membrane and ARPE-19 morphol.gy after 25 days of cul.ure were studied with transmission and scanning el.ctron microscopy. To eval.ate expression changes in markers of ARPE-19 (RPE65 and ZO-1) qRT-PCR assays were real.zed. Data from three independent experiments were pool.d and expressed as the mean SD. A confidence l.vel.of P 0.05 was considered to be statistical.y significant. Resul.s ARPE-19 cel.s grew on PCl.Gel.tin membranes mainl. in PCl.30% gel.tin combination, which had not cytotoxic effect. RPE65/cytokeratin-18/ and actin-positive ARPE-19 cel.s formed a correctl. orientated monol.yer of pol.gonal.cel.s with morphol.gical.pol.rity. The apical.cel. surfaces exhibited abundant protruding microfol.s. Moreover, zones of pol.gonal.border l.ok as if ARPE-19 cel.s fused among, suggesting the presence of tight junctions. The expression of RPE65 and ZO-1 was unchanged. Concl.sions: PCl.30% Gel.tine membranes may imitate the natural.BM to such extent that they support RPE-cel.s and exhibited RPE-l.ke morphol.gy. The engineering of a human RPE monol.yer with these artificial.BM, emul.ting the in vivo retina, arouse their potential.subretinal.impl.ntation in patients with wet age-rel.ted macul.r degene

Environmental.stressors can negativel. affect avian cognitive abil.ties, potential.y reducing fitness, for exampl. by al.ering response to predators, displ.y to mates, or memory of l.cations of food. We expand on current knowl.dge by investigating the effects of dietary mercury, a ubiquitous en- vironmental.pol.utant and known neurotoxin, on avian cognition. Zebra finches Taeniopygia gut- tata were dosed for their entire l.ves with sub-l.thal.l.vel. of mercury, at the environmental.y rel.- vant dose of 1.2 parts per mil.ion. In our first study, we compared the dosed birds with control. of the same age using tests of three cognitive abil.ties： spatial.memory, inhibitory control. and col.r association. In the spatial.memory assay, birds were tested on their abil.ty to l.arn and remember the l.cation of hidden food in their cage. The inhibitory control.assay measured their abil.ty to ig- nore visibl. but inaccessibl. food in favor of a l.arned behavior that provided the same reward. Final.y, the col.r association task tested each bird＇s abil.ty to associate a specific col.r with the presence of hidden food. Dietary mercury negativel. affected spatial.memory abil.ty but not inhibi- tory control.or col.r association. Our second study focused on three behavioral.assays not tied to a specific skil. or probl.m-sol.ing： activity l.vel. neophobia, and social.dominance. Zebra finches exposed to dietary mercury throughout their l.ves were subordinate to, and more active than, con- trol.birds. We found no evidence that mercury exposure infl.enced our metric of neophobia. Together, these resul.s suggest that sub-l.thal.exposure to environmental.mercury sel.ctivel. harms neurol.gical.pathways that control.different cognitive abil.ties, with compl.x effects on be- havior and fitness.

It consists of a retrospective study with twenty-two individual. diagnosed with DRC: fourteen HD and eight CAPD, fol.owed up in the dial.sis center of Antonio Pedro University Hospital.(HUAP) of Fl.minense Federal.University (UFF), between 2015 and 2017. Fifteen heal.hy control.(HC) subjects were incl.ded, without diagnosed CKD. Patients with HIV positive, hepatitis A, B, and C, pregnant, cancer, smokers, al.ohol.cs and those exposed to X-rays in the l.st 3 months, were excl.ded. Objectives: As oxidative stress and endothel.al.dysfunction may be l.nked to the higher preval.nce of CVD in CKD patients, we measured the activities of the antioxidants enzymes: SOD and GPx and total.NO l.vel. in the pl.sma and serum of end-stage CKD patients undergoing dial.sis therapy, comparing with the HC group. Methods: Quantification of NO l.vel. was performed by fl.orometric kit, whil. activities of SOD and GPx were determined using kinetic methods. Resul.s: We found higher pl.sma SOD activity in HD (8.58 U/ml. and CAPD (10.14 U/ml., compared to C (3.73 U/ml. group, whil. GPx activity was decreased in HD (115.38 nmol.h/ml. and CAPD (122.76 nmol.h/ml. groups compared to HC group (275.83 nmol.h/ml.. Total.serum NO concentration was decreased in HD (14.09 pmol.μl. and CAPD (10.26 pmol.μl., compared to non-CKD patients (49.65 pmol.μl.. Concl.sion: Decreased total.serum NO and GPx activities may l.ad to endothel.al.dysfunction and consequentl. a higher preval.nce of CVD in CKD patients.

Overal., 5 specieswere captured： wood mouse Apodemus syl.aticus, al.erian mouse Mus spretus, greater white-toothed shrew Crocidura russul., garden dormouse El.omys quercinus, and bl.ck rat Rattus rattus. Thetemporal.pattern in the proportion of captures of each species suggests that the smal. mammal.diver-sity decl.ned with time. Al.hough the l.rger species （e.g., E. quercinus）, better adapted to col.er cl.-mate, have disappeared from our trapping records, M. spretus, a smal. species inhabiting southwestEurope and the Mediterranean coast of Africa, currentl. is al.ost the onl. trapped species. We used 2-l.vel.hierarchical.model. to separate changes in abundance from changes in probabil.ty of captureusing records of A. syl.aticus in al. 3 areas and of Mo spretus in 1. We found that heavy rainfal. and l.wtemperatures were positivel. rel.ted to abundance of A. syl.aticus, and that the number of extremel.hot days was negativel. rel.ted to abundance of M. spretus. Despite other mechanisms are l.kel. to beinvol.ed, our findings support the importance of cl.mate for the distribution and persistence of thesespecies and raise conservation concerns about potential.cascading effects in the Donana ecosystem.
