Trihalomethane concentrations in tap water as determinant of bottled water use in the city of Barcelona

Bottled water consumption is increasing worldwide, despite its huge economic and environmental cost. We aim to describe personal and tap water quality determinants of bottled water use in the city of Barcelona. This cross-sectional study used data from the Health Survey of Barcelona in 2006（N = 5417 adults）. The use of bottled water to drink and to cook was evaluated in relation to age, gender, educational level, district and levels of trihalomethanes（THms）, free chlorine, conductivity, chloride, sodium, p H, nitrate and aluminium in municipal tap water using Robust Poisson Regression. The prevalence of bottled water use to drink and cook was 53.9% and 6.7%, respectively. Chemical parameters in water had a large variability（interquartile range of THms concentrations： 83.2–200.8 μg/L）and were correlated between them, except aluminium. Drinking bottled water increased with educational level, while cooking with bottled water was higher among men than among women and decreased with age. After adjusting by these personal determinants, a dose–response relationship was found between concentrations of all chemicals except aluminium in tap water and bottled water use. The highest association was found for THms,with a Prevalence Ratio of 2.00（95%CI = 1.86, 2.15） for drinking bottled water and 2.80（95%CI = 1.72, 4.58） for cooking with bottled water, among those with 〉 150 μg/L vs. 〈 100 μg/L THms in tap water. Conclusion： more than half of Barcelona residents regularly drank bottled water, and the main determinant was the chemical composition of tap water,particularly THm level.

Involvement of Autoimmune Diseases in the Pathogenesis of Chronic Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a condition based on an immune-mediated mechanism that determines the premature hyperdestruction of the thrombocytes in peripheral blood, as well as their deficient synthesis at the level of the bone marrow. The chronic immune purpura could be of primary, idiopathic cause, as well as of secondary cause, occurring in the context of other pathologies. The characteristic of the primary form of the disease is the presence of isolated thrombocytopenia, defined by a platelet count under 100,000/mm3 in peripheral blood, in the absence of supporting causes for thrombocytopenia. In the secondary form of the disease, the decreased platelet count is due to associated pathologies involving an immune mechanism, responsible for the occurrence of thrombocytopenia. This study aims to emphasize the involvement of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), dermatomyositis, rheumatoid polyarthritis or antiphospholipid syndrome in the pathogenesis of secondary thrombocytopenia. Furthermore, the study was conducted on a sample of 40 patients, divided into two groups: The first group comprising asymptomatic patients diagnosed with thrombocytopenia following routine tests, and the second group comprising patients with hemorrhagiparous symptomatology (petechiae, ecchymoses, epistaxis, gingivorrhagia), who went to the doctor in order to determine the etiology of the hemorrhagiparous syndrome. The average value of the thrombocytopenia of the patients included in the study was of 60.20 ± 19.75 × 103/μL. Laboratory investigations performed in order to establish the etiology of thrombocytopenia showed that 80% of patients presented positive antiplatelet antibodies. moreover, 20% of the patients in the study showed positive anti-double-stranded DNA, 20% were identified with IgG anticardiolipin antibodies, while antinuclear antibodies were present in 10% of the patients.

Human prion-like proteins often correspond to nucleic acid binding proteins,displaying both globular domains and long intrinsically disordered regions(IDRs)(Harrison and Shorter,2017).Their IDRs are of low complexity and resemble in amino acid composition to the disordered yeast prion domains,being usually enriched in Gln and Asn residues and depleted in hydrophobic and charged ***,these sequence stretches are named prion-like domains(PrLDs).Prion-like proteins can aggregate into amyloid fibrils,which can accommodate incoming protein monomers,propagating thus the polymeric fold,both processes being。

myeloproliferative neoplasms(mPNs)occur due to the abnormal proliferation of one or more terminal myeloid cell lines in peripheral *** suffering from mPNs display a high burden of cardiovascular risk factors,and thrombotic events are often the cause of death in this population of ***,we provide a brief overview of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome and their epidemiology in mPNs and examine the common molecular mechanisms between dyslipidemia,metabolic syndrome,and mPNs,with a special focus on cardio-vascular risk,atherosclerosis,and thrombotic ***,we investigate the impact of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome on the occurrence and survival of thrombosis in mPN patients,as well as the management of dyslipidemia in mPNs,and the impact of mPN treatment on serum lipid concentrations,particularly as side/adverse effects reported in the context of clinical trials.

Aims mediterranean coastal dunes are habitats of great conservation interest,with a distinctive and rich *** the last century,Acacia spp.,native from Australia,have been introduced in Portugal,with the objective of stabilizing sand dunes,and since have become dominant in numerous sand dune *** invasion process led to the reduction of native plant species richness,changed soil characteristics and modified habitat’s microclimatic *** aim of this research was to typify and compare,in mediterranean sand dune ecosystems,the ecophysiological responses to drought of Helichrysum italicum and Corema album,two native species,and Acacia longifolia,an exotic invasive *** addressed the following specific objectives:(i)to com-pare water relations and water use efficiencies,(ii)to evaluate water stress,(iii)to assess water use strategies and water sources used by plants and(iv)to evaluate the morphological adaptations at leaf and phyllode *** In order to obtain an integrative view of ecophysiological patterns,water relations and performance measuring methods have been applied:predawn(ψPD)and midday(ψmD)water potential,chloro-phyll a fluorescence,oxygen isotopic composition of xylem,rain and groundwater(δ18O)and leaf carbon isotopic discrimination(Δ13C).The leaf characteristics of the three species,as well as the histochemistry of non-glandular trichome cell walls,were also studied to identify morpho-traits related to drought *** Findings The results support our initial hypothesis:although *** clearly possesses a degree of resistance to water stress,such ability is provided by a different water strategy,when compared to native *** relied on morphological adaptations to restrict water loss,whereas the invasive species adjusted the water uptake as a way to balance their limited ability of restricting water *** corroborate that woody native species(i)have a conservative water-saving strategy an

Genetic mapping and survey of powdery mildew resistance in the wild Central Asian ancestor of cultivated grapevines in Central Asia

The misfolding and aggregation of a-synuclein is the general hallmark of a group of devastating neurodegenerative pathologies referred to as synucleinopathies,such as Parkinson’s disease,dementia with Lewy bodies,and multiple system *** such conditions,a range of different misfolded aggregates,including oligomers,protofibrils,and fibrils,are present both in neurons and glial *** expe rimental evidence supports the proposition that solu ble oligomeric assemblies,formed during the early phases of the aggregation process,are the major culprits of neuronal toxicity;at the same time,fibrillar confo rmers appear to be the most efficient at propagating among interconnected neurons,thus contributing to the spreading ofα-synuclein ***,α-synuclein fibrils have been recently repo rted to release soluble and highly toxic oligomeric species,responsible for an immediate dysfunction in the recipient *** this review,we discuss the current knowledge about the plethora of mechanisms of cellular dysfunction caused byα-synuclein oligome rs and fibrils,both contributing to neurodegeneration in synucleinopathies.
