Objective:To investigate the vasorelaxant effect of organic extracts from Apium graveolens(***)which is a part of a group of plants subjected to pharmacological and phytochemical study with the purpose of offering it as an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive ***:An ex vivo method was employed to assess the vasorelaxant *** consisted of using rat aortic rings with and without endothelium precontracted with ***:All extracts caused concentration-dependent relaxation in precontracted aortic rings with and without endothelium;the most active extracts were Dichloromethane and Ethyl Acetate extracts from *** results suggested that secondary metabolites responsible for the vasorelaxant activity belong to a group of compounds of medium ***,our evidence showed that effect induced by dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts from *** is mediated probably by calcium ***:*** represents an ideal source for obtaining lead compounds for designing new therapeutic agents with potential vasorelaxant and antihypertensive effects.

5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a fluorinated, pyrimidine analog, antineoplastic agent that is used in the treatment of several solid organ cancers. Cardiotoxicity is uncommon but life-threatening manifestations such as myocardial infarction may manifest owing to 5-FU-induced coronary artery spasm. Administering smaller doses of the drug, more frequently than not, decreases the risk of cardiotoxicity compared to large doses or with continuous infusions. We present a case of ST-segment elevation in a patient without known coronary artery disease who had presented following continuous 5-FU infusion. Coronary angiogram confirmed absence of coronary artery disease and intravenous calcium channel blockers administration was commensurate with the patient’s improvement in symptoms. We discuss the literature on 5-FU and its association with coronary artery spasm, and also briefly review chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicities to help better prepare internists and other primary health care providers to face similar challenges, particularly of the uncommon but potentially life-threatening manifestations.

Hurricane Matthew Impacts to Marine and Coastal Biodiversity on Southern Coast of Dominican Republic

A rapid environmental assessment was conducted by the staff of Marine Biology Research Center （CIBIMA）, Faculty of Sciences, Universidad Aut6noma de Santo Domingo （UASD） on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, to evaluate the effects of the hurricane Matthew on October 3, being the 14th storm of the year 2016 for the Caribbean region. The observations were carried out two weeks after the storm hit. These observations included coastal ecosystems, such as marshes, beaches, lagoons, wetlands, mangrove forests, nearshore sea grasses and coral reefs. The evaluation included observations on the magnitude of the distresses and levels of destruction---changes, produced by the intense weather and upset climate from the storm. The data gathered were recorded following a categorization of impacts. It also included a description of the different coastal communities after being impacted and affected by the storm.

Abstract The phylogenetic relationship of lecanoroid lichens is studied using two data sets:1)a 2-locus data set including 251 OTUs representing 150 species,and 2)a 6-locus data set with 82 OTUs representing 53 *** genus Lecanora as currently circumscribed is shown to be highly polyphyletic and several genera,including Adelolecia,Arctopeltis,Bryonora,Carbonea,Frutidella,Lecidella,Miriquidica,Palicella,Protoparmeliopsis,Pyrrhospora,and Rhizoplaca are nested within Lecanora sensu lato.A core group of Lecanora is supported as monophyletic and includes species of the ***,***,and *** groups,and a core group of the *** *** monophyletic clades that are well supported in our analyses and well characterized by phenotypical characters are accepted here:1)Myriolecis to accommodate the Lecanora dispersa group and Arctopeltis;2)Protoparmeliopsis for the *** group;and 3)Rhizoplaca is emended to include three placodioid taxa previously classified in Lecanora(***,***),whereas *** and *** are excluded from *** latter is transferred into *** is strongly supported as a monophyletic *** studies indicate the presence of additional clades of species currently placed in Lecanora sensu lato that warrant taxonomic recognition but additional data will be necessary before the circumscription of these entities is fully understood.37 new combinations are proposed into the genera Myriolecis(30),Protoparmeliopsis(2),and Rhizoplaca(5).

AIM To evaluate the long-term outcome of an acute hemodynamic response-guided protocol in which acute responders to intravenous propranolol received traditional nonselective beta-blockers(NSBBs) and acute nonresponders received *** Retrospective review of a protocol for primary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding guided by the acute hemodynamic response to intravenous propranolol. Fifty-two acute responders treated with traditional NSBB(i.e. propranolol or nadolol) were compared with 24 acute nonresponders receiving carvedilol. A second hemodynamic study was performed in 27 and 13 patients, respectively. The primary endpoint was development of first or further decompensation. Secondary endpoints included death from any cause, association between acute and chronic hemodynamic response, and baseline clinical and laboratory variables related to the acute hemodynamic *** Acute responders and acute nonresponders presented similar 1, 2, and 3-year probabilities of first decompensation(NSBB: 0%, 13.7%, 26.1% vs carvedilol: 0%, 20%, 20%, P = 0.968) or further decompensation(21.2%, 26.1%, 40.9% vs 21.2%, 50.0%, 50.0%, P = 0.525). A previous episode of hepatic encephalopathy was the only independent predictor of decompensation [hazard ratio(95% confidence interval): 8.03(2.76-23.37)]. Mortality rates were similar in acute responders and acute nonresponders with compensated(P = 0.428) or decompensated cirrhosis(P = 0.429). No clinical, laboratory, endoscopic or hemodynamic parameter predicted the acute hemodynamic response. In patients receiving traditional NSBB, the acute and chronic changes of hepatic venous pressure gradient were correlated(r = 0.59, P = 0.001). Mineral phosphate solubilization activity of gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus under P-limitation and plant root environment

The ability to solubilize insoluble inorganic pho- sphate compounds by Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus was studied using different cul-ture approaches. Qualitative plate assays using tricalcium phosphate as the sole P-source showed that G. diazotrophicus produced solu-bilization only when aldoses were used as the C-source. Extracellular aldose oxidation via a pyrroloquinoline quinone-linked glucose dehy-drogenase (PQQ-GDH) is the main pathway for glucose metabolism in G. diazotrophicus. In batch cultures with 5 g l-1 of hydroxyapatite as the P-source and glucose as the C-source, more than 98% of insoluble P was solubilized. No solubilization was observed neither using glyc-erol nor culturing a PQQ-GDH mutant of G. di-azotrophicus. Solubilizaton was not affected by adding 100 mmol l-1 of MES buffer. Continuous cultures of G. diazotrophicus showed significant activities of PQQ-GDH either under C or P limi-tation. An intense acidification in the root envi-ronment of tomato and wheat seedlings inocu-lated with a G. diazotrophicus PAL5 was ob-served. Seedlings inoculated with a PQQ-GDH mutant strain of G. diazotrophicus showed no acidification. Our results suggest that G. di-azotrophicus is an excellent candidate to be used as biofertilizer because in addition to the already described plant growth-promoting abili-ties of this organism, it shows a significant mineral phosphate solubilization capacity.
