Should a fully covered self-expandable biliary metal stent be anchored with a double-pigtail plastic stent? A retrospective study

BACKGROUND The migration rate of fully covered self-expandable metal stents(FCSEmSs) has been reported to be between 14% to 37%. Anchoring of FCSEmSs using a doublepigtail plastic stent(DPS) may decrease *** To compare stent migration rates between patients who received FCSEmS alone and those who received both an FCSEmS and anchoring *** We conducted a retrospective analysis of endoscopy reporting system and medical records of 1366 patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) with FCSEmS placement at the University of Kentucky health care. Between July 2015 and April 2017,203 patients with FCSEmS insertion for the treatment of malignant biliary stricture,benign biliary stricture,post-sphincterotomy bleeding,bile leak,and cholangitis drainage were identified. The review and analysis were conducted through our endoscopy reporting system(ProVation~? mD) and medical records. Categorical data were analyzed using Chi-Square and Fischer exact test and continuous data using nonparametric tests. A regression analysis was performed to identify factors independently associated with increased risk of stent migration. We determinedan FCSEmS migration endoscopically if the stent was no longer visible in the major ***1366 patients had undergone ERCP by three advanced endoscopists over 21-mo period; among these,203 patients had FCSEmSs placed. 65 patients had FCSEmSs with DPS,and 138 had FCSEmSs alone. 65 patients had FCSEmSs with DPS,and 138 had FCSEmSs alone. 95 patients had a malignant stricture,82 patients had a benign stricture,12 patients had bile leak,12 patients had cholangitis,and nine patients had post-sphincterotomy bleeding. The migration rate in patients with anchored FCSEmSs with DPS was 6%,and those without anchoring DPS was 10%(P = 0.35). Role of the gut microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease pathogenesis: What have we learnt in the past 10 years?

Our understanding of the microbial involvement in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) pathogenesis has increased exponentially over the past decade. The development of newer molecular tools for the global assessment of the gut microbiome and the identification of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 2 in 2001 and other susceptibility genes for Crohn’s disease in particular has led to better understanding of the aetiopathogenesis of IBD. The microbial studies have elaborated the normal composition of the gut microbiome and its perturbations in the setting of IBD. This altered microbiome or “dysbiosis” is a key player in the protracted course of inflammation in IBD. Numerous genome-wide association studies have identified further genes involved in gastrointestinal innate immunity (including polymorphisms in genes involved in autophagy: ATG16L1 and IGRm), which have helped elucidate the relationship of the local innate immunity with the adjacent luminal bacteria. These developments have also spurred the search for specific pathogens which may have a role in the metamorphosis of the gut microbiome from a symbiotic entity to a putative pathogenic one. Here we review advances in our understanding of microbial involvement in IBD pathogenesis over the past 10 years and offer insight into how this will shape our therapeutic management of the disease in the coming years.

Laboratory Study on the Removal of Fluorine from High Fluorine Bearing Zinc Oxide Ore

An ever increasing demand for zinc has resulted in worldwide efforts to exploit complex and lean grade reserves of zinc oxide ore. In this study experiments were done on zinc recovery from high-fluorine bearing zinc oxide ore. First the effect of different variables on fluorine removal was investigated. Optimum experimental conditions occurred when the temperature was 1173 K, roasting time was 90 min and air flow was at a velocity of 5 m/min, the fluorine removal from the samples reached over 93%. The results obtained indicate that fluorine removal is not enhanced by adding diluted sulfuric acid or water as a binder. Second the roasted materials were leached with a diluted sulfuric acid, neutralized, flocculated and filtrated. The which satisfies the requirement of fluorine residual fluorine content in the leached content in the leached solutions for the solutions was less than 38 mg/L production of electrolytic zinc.

We report results from a neutral hydrogen(H I)intensity mapping survey conducted with a Phased Array Feed(PAF)on the Parkes *** survey was designed to cover 380 deg^(2)over the redshift range 0.3me of 1.5 Gpc^(3))in four fields covered by the Wiggle Z Dark Energy *** results presented here target a narrow redshift range of 0.73mulation pipeline was described,with an emphasis on flagging of RFI and correction for signal loss in the data reduction process,particularly due to the foreground subtraction methodology.A cross-correlation signal was detected between the H I intensity maps and the Wiggle Z redshift data,with a mean amplitude of=1.32±0.42 m K(statistical errors only).A future Parkes cryogenic PAF is expected to detect the cross-correlation signal with higher accuracy than previously possible and allow measurement of the cosmic H I density at redshifts up to unity.

Biomass responses to intraspecific competition differ between wild species and CO_(2)

Aims How growth of wild and crop species responds to global environmental perturbations has both ecological and agricultural significance in a changing *** primary aim of this synthesis was to quantitatively assess the interactive effects of intraspecific competition and elevated CO_(2) on biomass production in herbaceous *** Using meta-analytical techniques,we synthesized data from publications before 2006 that reported biomass responses to elevated CO_(2) in 321 herbaceous species grown in isolation or in competition with con-specific *** findings Intraspecific competition differentially modified biomass responses to elevated CO_(2) in wild and crop *** example,competition reduced CO_(2) stimulation of total biomass(WT)from 27 to 23%in wild species,but by a much greater magnitude,i.e.,from 43 to 32%in *** had no effect on responses of either above-(WAG)or below-ground(WBG)biomass to elevated CO_(2) in wild species,but significantly diminished CO_(2) enhancement of WAG,although not of WBG,in *** variations were found among functional groups in the modification of growth responses to elevated CO_(2) by intraspecific competition,which exerted greater depression on CO_(2) enhancement in C3 than in C4 species and in non-legumes than in *** CO_(2) affected leaf and stem growth of individually grown C3 graminoids and forbs similarly,but increased leaf growth only in C4 graminoids and stem growth only in C4 *** from this synthesis demonstrated that intraspecific competition differentially affected growth responses to elevated CO_(2) in wild and crop *** wildcrop species differences will have important implications for understanding primary production by herbaceous species in both natural and agricultural ecosystems in the future when atmospheric CO_(2) is significantly higher than the current level.

Stop flow lithography synthesis of non-spherical metal oxide particles

Non-spherical micron and hand-sized particles and their composites have become essential in select application areas of optics, wear resistance, personnel protection, chemical mechanical polishing, and biomedicine. In this paper, the synthesis of composite and ceramic non-spherical particles using stop flow lithography is reported. Precursor suspensions of poly（ethylene glycol） diacrylate, 2-hydroxy- 2-methylpropiophenone and SiO2 or Al2O3 are prepared. The precursor suspension flows through a microfluidic device mounted on an upright microscope and is polymerized in an automated process. A photomask patterned with transparent geometric features, which define the cross-sectional shapes of the particles, masks the UV light to synthesize micron sized particles. Particles with axial dimensions ranging from 35 to 167μm were synthesized. Control of device channel depth and objective lens magnification enables the manipulation of the particle size. Composite particles in triangular, square, pentagonal, hexagonal, and circular cross sections were synthesized. Subsequently, the transformation of the composite particles into the corresponding metal oxide particles was achieved through polymer burn-offand sintering.

Cutting the Gordian knot： Complex signaling in African cichlids is more than multimodal

The active transmission of information from sender to receiver is a fundamental component of communication, and is therefore a primary facet in evolutionary models of sexual selection. Research in several systems has underlined the importance of multiple sensory modalities in courtship signals. However, we still tend to think of individuals as having a relatively static signal in consecutive communicative events. While this may be true for certain traits such as body size or coloration, behaviorally modulated signals can quickly violate this assumption. In this work, we explore how intraspecific variation may be an important component of interspecific signal divergence using cichlid fishes from Lake malawi. Behavioral analyses were made using six species of malawian cichlids from two divergent genera. While interspecific differences were found between congeners based on species-level analyses of both acoustic and audiovisual signals, intraspecific variation was of a similar magnitude. Specifically, individual fishes were found to possess highly plastic signal repertoires. This finding was ubiquitous across all species and resuited in a great deal of overlap between heterospecific individuals, despite statistically distinct species means. These results demonstrate that some aspects of courtship in malawian cichlids are more plastic than previously proposed, and that studies must account for signal variability within individuals. We propose here that behavioral variability in signaling is important in determining the communication landscape on which signals are perceived. We review potential complexity deriving from multimodal signaling, discuss the sources for such lability, and suggest ways in which this issue may be approached experimentally .
