The effectiveness of different wear indicators in quantifying wear on railway wheels of freight wagons

Railway infrastructure relies on the dynamic interaction between wheels and rails;thus,assessing wheel wear is a critical aspect of maintenance and *** paper focuses on the wheel-rail wear indicator T-gamma(Tγ).Amidst its use,it becomes apparent that Tγ,while valuable,fails to provide a comprehensive reflection of the actual material removal and actual contact format,which means that using only Tγas a target for optimization of profiles is not *** this work,three different freight wagons are evaluated:a meter-gauge and a broad-gauge heavy haul vehicles from South American railways,and a standard-gauge freight vehicle operated in Europe,with different axle loads and dissimilar new wheel/rail *** vehicles are subjected to comprehensive multibody simulations on various *** simulations aimed to elucidate the intricate relationship between different wear indicators:Tγ,wear index,material removal,and maximum wear depth,under diverse curves,non-compensated lateral accelerations(A_(nc)),and *** findings showed a correlation of 0.96 between Tγand wear depth and 0.82 between wear index and material removed for the outer *** the results,the Tγis better than the wear index to be used when analyzing wear depth while the wear index is more suited to foresee the material *** results also show the low influence of A_(nc)on wear index and Tγ.By considering these factors together,the study aims to improve the understanding of wheel-rail wear by selecting the best wear analysis approaches based on the effectiveness of each parameter.

Ni/Carbon Hybrid Prepared by Hydrothermal Carbonization and Thermal Treatment as Support for PtRu Nanoparticles for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell

Ni/Carbon was prepared in two steps： initially cellulose as carbon source and NiCl2·6H2O as catalyst of the carbonization process were submitted to hydrothermal treatment at 200 ℃ and further to thermal treatment at 900 ℃ under argon atmosphere. The obtained material contains Ni nanoparticles with face-centered cubic （fcc） structure dispersed on amorphous carbon with graphitic domains. PtRu/C electrocatalysts （carbon- supported PtRu nanoparticles） were prepared by an alcohol-reduction process using Ni/Carbon as support. The materials were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and tested as anodes in single direct methanol fuel cell （DMFC）. The performances of PtRu/C electrocatalysts using Ni/Carbon as support were superior to those obtained for PtRu/C using commercial carbon black Vulcan XC72 as support.

Artificial intelligence (AI) operates by using algorithms and statistical models based on data, enabling computers to imitate a real form of intelligence. The structure of the data available and the aim of the research define the technique to be adopted, which will be evaluated by its degree of accuracy and its capacity for generalization. In recent years, several applications of artificial intelligence have emerged in the fight against cancer, due to its development, computing power and learning potential. This article presents the current state of AI systems, describing the techniques and innovations that have led to satisfactory results in the fight against cancer. .

The role of metaplasia in stomach cancer is a matter of being debated. A comparative study on intestinal metaplasip of stomach in Chinese and Americans who live in different incidence areas of stomach cancer was performed to explore the relationship between metaplasia and stomach cancer. The intestinal metapIasia of stomach epithelium, especially Type Ⅲof intestinal metaplasia is considered as a precancerous condition, has been supported by its geographic distribution, morphological, histological and histochoemical appearance of gastric biopsies in Chinese and Americans.

Association between the CYBA and NOX4 genes of NADPH oxidase and its relationship with metabolic syndrome in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Brazilian population

Background: Oxidative stress has been implicated in the progression of severe forms of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). NADPH oxidase produces reactive oxygen species. In the present study, we investigated for the first time two single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) in the regulatory region of genes encoding NADPH oxidase 4(NOX4) and p22 phox(CYBA) in ***: A total of 207 biopsy-proven NAFLD patients [simple steatosis(n = 27); nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)(n = 180)] were evaluated. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood cells, and polymorphisms in CYBA(unregistered) and NOX4(rs3017887) were determined by direct sequencing of ***: Associations of CYBA-675 T/A with high-density lipoprotein(HDL)(TT vs TA vs AA; P < 0.01) and triglycerides(TGL)(TT vs XA; P < 0.01) were observed only in NASH patients. For polymorphisms in the NOX4 gene, NOX4(rs3017887) CA + AA genotypes was significant associated with alanine aminotransferase(ALT)(CA + AA vs CC; P = 0.02). However, there was no association of SNPs in the CYBA and NOX4 genes encoding the NADPH oxidase system proteins and the presence of NASH. Regarding the clinical results, it was observed that the most advanced degrees of fibrosis occurred in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus(66.9% vs 37.5%, P < 0.01) and those who were more obese(32.2 vs 29.0 kg/m2,P < 0.01). In addition, serum glucose and insulin levels increased significantly in the presence of ***: There were associations between the presence of the allele A in the NOX4 SNP and a higher concentration of ALT in the NAFLD population; between the presence of the AA genotype in the polymorphism of the CYBA-675 T/A CYBA gene and a higher level of TGL and lower HDL in NASH patients. The presence of metabolic syndrome was associated with advanced degrees of fibrosis in NAFLD patients.

Circulating insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3 as prognostic biomarker in liver cirrhosis

AIM: To investigate the prognostic significance of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3(IGFBP-3) in patients with ***: Prospective study that included two cohorts: outpatients with stable cirrhosis(n = 138) and patients hospitalized for acute decompensation(n = 189). Development of complications, mortality or liver transplantation was assessed by periodical phone calls and during outpatient visits. The cohort of stable cirrhosis also underwent clinical and laboratory evaluation yearly(2013 and 2014) in predefined study visits. In patients with stable cirrhosis, IGFBP-3 levels were measured at baseline(2012) and at second re-evaluation(2014). In hospitalized subjects, IGFBP-3 levels were measured in serum samples collected in the first and in the third day after admission and stored at-80 ℃. IGFBP-3 levels were measured by ***: IGFBP-3 levels were lower in hospitalized patients as compared to outpatients(0.94 mcg/mL vs 1.69 mcg/m L, P < 0.001) and increased after liver transplantation(3.81 mcg/m L vs 1.33 mcg/mL, P = 0.008). During the follow-up of the stable cohort, 17 patients died and 11 received liver transplantation. Bivariate analysis showed that death or transplant was associated with lower IGFBP-3 levels(1.44 mcg/mL vs 1.74 mcg/m L, P = 0.027). The Kaplan-Meier transplant-free survival probability was 88.6% in patients with IGFBP-3 ≥ 1.67 mcg/mL and 72.1% for those with IGFBP3 < 1.67 mcg/mL(P = 0.015). In the hospitalized cohort, 30-d mortality was 24.3% and was independently associated with creatinine, INR, SpO_2/FiO_2 ratio and IGFBP-3 levels in the logistic regression. The 90-d transplant-free survival probability was 80.4% in patients with IGFBP-3 ≥ 0.86 mcg/mL and 56.1% for those with IGFBP3 < 0.86 mcg/mL(P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Lower IGFBP-3 levels were associated with worse outcomes in patients with cirrhosis, and might represent a promising prognostic tool that can be incorporated in clinical practice.

Synthesis and characterization of nano-hydroxyapatite added with magnesium obtained by wet chemical precipitation

Biogenic hydroxyapatites from mammalian bones naturally contain traces of ions, like Mg, which play a vital role in the bone remodeling process. In this way, synthetic hydroxyapatites should include this kind of mineral. In this work, hydroxyapatite added with Mg was synthesized by wet precipitation using（NH;）H;PO;, Ca（NO;）;.4 H;O,and Mg（NO;）;.6 H;O（0, 0.032, 0.061, and 0.123 M）. Inductively coupled plasma and X-ray diffraction evidenced the Mg inclusion in the hydroxyapatite lattice in the same levels reported for natural hydroxyapatites. The calcination at 600℃ was performed to remove the reaction by-products, but it also gave rise to physicochemical changes as the coalescence and crystals recrystallization. It produced, in turn, an improvement in the crystalline quality, according to Raman analysis. Despite those physicochemical changes, all the samples remained nanometric according to scanning electron microscopy imaging.

The Potential Role of Environment in Structuring the Microbiota of <i>Camponotus</i>across Parts of the Body

Several studies have attempted to understand what may influence the bacterial community of a host, but studies examining whether different bacterial species are found in different parts of the body of insects are limited. In the present study, we address the following questions: 1) How are bacterial communities distributed across different parts of the body (head, mesosoma, gaster) of Camponotus and 2) Is the diversity found explained by the environment in which these ants were collected? Our results were able to differentiate the bacterial communities present in the different parts of the body and can be explained in the following way: each part of the body has unique organs with different functions;and the complex proventriculum of Camponotus may be acting as a filter and structuring the bacterial community found in the gaster. In addition, an unexpected finding of the present study was the high diversity found associated with the head and mesosoma, and our findings were able to confirm that this diversity is associated with the environment where the ants were collected. Knowing more about the factors that can influence bacterial communities may reveal more about the importance of these associations in nature.

The Exchange Processes in the Patos Lagoon Estuarine Channel,Brazil

Investigation of process controlling the estuarine-shelf interaction in the Patos Lagoon estuarine channel is accessed using a two-dimensional numerical model. Results obtained suggest this approximation provides good precision level to investigate the advective transport of oceanic waters near the estuarine mouth. The introduction of coastal waters in synoptic time scales is dominated by advection in sub-superficial layers. This process results from the competition between flood currents driven by remote wind effects and gravitational circulation controlled by the intensity of the freshwater discharge. The short term exchange processes follow one most energetic cycle of 8 days and intense flood events occur during periods of low continental discharge and higher intensity winds. Very stratified salinity profiles are found during periods of moderated freshwater discharge. The salt transport is inversely related to the freshwater discharge intensity. It presents a mean rate of the 105 ***-1 transported landward during flood events.

Health production and risk of obesity among Chilean adolescents: Understanding health related behaviors in youth

Background: Adolescent obesity is associated with high cardiovascular and metabolic risk. Western diet and reduced physical activity are strong environmental determinants. The “Health Production” model posits that individuals born with a certain amount of health stock, which depreciates over life, but can be augmented by individual behaviors, including exercise and dieting. Objective: To study the association between health production and obesity in a random sample of 1692 Chilean adolescents (14.8 ± 0.7 years old), and to study the effect of gender and socioeconomic characteristics on health production. Method: We used an indicator that considered the quality of food intake and physical activity, establishing three categories: good (GHP), intermediate (IHP) and poor health producers (PHP). Multivariate analysis was used to study the odds of obesity and good health production. Results: There was 31% of GHP, 32% of IHP and 38% of PHP. Obesity (Adj. OR: 1.59;95%CI: 1.04 - 2.42) and abdominal obesity (Adj. OR: 2.24;95%CI: 1.35 - 3.40) were significantly higher in the PHP group, compared to the GHP and IHP group. Health production was significantly associated with socioeconomic factors and gender. Female sex and coming from a less wealthy household significantly reduced the odds of good health production. Conclusions: Poor health production in adolescence, as defined by food intake and physical activity, depreciates individuals’ “health stock”, increasing the risk of obesity. In our sample, health production was strongly associated with socio-economic factors and gender.
