Associations among benign prostate hypertrophy, atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and latent carcinoma of the prostate

Aim： To investigate the frequency of atypical adenomatous hyperplasia （AAH） and its associations with benign prostate hypertrophy （BPH） and latent histological carcinoma of the prostate （LPC） in autopsy material. Methods： Two hundred and twelve prostate specimens obtained from autopsy material were subjected to whole mount analysis in an attempt to investigate the associations among BPH, AAH and LPC. Results： Most histological carcinomas and AAH lesions were found in enlarged prostates with intense hypertrophy. No statistically significant relation was found between BPH and the main characteristics of LPC, such as tumor volume, histological differentiation and biological behavior. Our data regarding multi-focal tumors showed a tendency for multi-focal carcinomas to develop in larger prostates, and a tendency of AAH lesions to develop in larger prostates. No statistically significant relation was found between AAH and LPC. Conclusion： There seems not any causative aetiopathogenetical or topographical relation between AAH lesions and prostate adenocarcinoma. AAH lesion seems to be a well-defined mimicker of prostatic adenocarcinoma, and the reported association of AAH with prostatic carcinoma could probably be an epiphenomenon.

Nowadays, the most prominent risk assessment techniques are founded on the values of measuring and controlling the frequency and the consequences of risks in order to assure an ＂acceptable level＂ of ＂safeness＂ mainly in the lines of environmental, health and hygiene and port product issues. This paper initially introduces risk assessment approaches within the emerging role of ports Thereafter, it qualitatively assesses their potential for ports by discussing issues challenging every safety and security approach within the maritime industry such as proactiveness, organization, transparency, cost-effectiveness and, when possible, calibration to specific experiences. Moreover, an empirical study was conducted in order to provide evidence for formal risk assessment for safety and security in the main Greek port container terminals of Piraeus and Thessaloniki. The empirical research is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with the administrations of container terminals. The results include important findings, regarding the likelihood of appearance of certain risks and their perceived severity in Greek container terminals. The collected answers and their analysis are also important for confirming the suggested theoretical formal risk assessment framework for ports.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of grilling and brining on the sensory properties, the fillet fatty acid composition and the cardio-protective activity of sardine (Sardina pilchardus), studying the in vitro activity against Platelet-Activating-Factor (PAF) induced platelet aggregation. Sensory evaluation of grilled and brined sardine showed that grilled sardine had higher scores for the attributes: grilled fish, marine and fresh fish whereas brined sardine had higher scores for the attributes: salty, iodine, oily and bitter. Grilled sardine exhibited significantly increased fillet fatty acid content while the brined fish sample significantly decreased fatty acid levels. Polar lipids of all specimens (raw, grilled and brined) showed strong inhibitory activity against PAF action indicating that grilling and brining have not diminished the cardio-protective properties of sardine.

Ultra-Wideband Impulse Radio (UWB-IR) technologies, although are relatively easy in transmission but they present difficulties in reception, in fact the reception of such waveform is a quite complicated matter. The main reason is that in fully digital receiver the received waveform must be sampled at a rate of several GHz. This paper focuses on the impact of the Analog to Digital (A/D) conversion stage that is used to sample the received waveform. More specifically we focus on the impact of the two main parameters that affect the performance of the Software Defined Radio (SDR) system. These parameters are the bit resolution and the time jittering. The influence of these parameters is deeply examined.

Ectopic colonic varices development from liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension is uncommon. They are part of the spectrum of portal hypertensive colopathy. Colonic variceal bleeding remains a rare cause of lower gastrointestinal tract (GI) bleeding. Due to the paucity of cases, there are no well-established conventional treatments for bleeding colonic varices. Different treatments have been reported. Here, we report a case of a 55-year-old gentleman, with a history of alcoholic liver cirrhosis, presenting with severe lower GI bleeding and symptomatic anaemia. An esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed large esophageal varices with high-risk bleeding stigmata requiring endoscopic variceal ligation. A cross-sectional computed tomography scan showed colonic portosystemic shunts. In light of this and that the severe lower GI bleeding seemed out of proportion to the esophageal varices seen on upper endoscopy, an urgent unprepped colonoscopy was performed which revealed possible bleeding diverticula disease which required endoscopic mechanical hemoclip therapy. However, despite this, patient had recurrence of lower GI bleeding prompting a second colonoscopy. This relook colonoscopy showed ectopic ascending colon varices with high-risk bleeding stigmata. High-dose intravenous vasoactive agent somatostatin (500 mcg/hour) and subsequently terlipressin (2 mg every 4 hours) were used. The patient subsequently underwent successful balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (B-RTO) and sclerotherapy. The non-selective beta-blocker (NSBB) carvedilol was started and bridged together with the vasoactive agent until stabilisation of portal hypertension. This difficult case illustrates the dynamic nature of portal hypertensive bleeding. It also highlights the presence of confounding non-variceal pathology complicating diagnosis of portal hypertensive colonic variceal bleeding, and that ectopic ascending colonic variceal bleeding can be treated successfully with B-RTO and scle

Port systems are more prone to being risk oriented. Many specific methods have been found to assess risk in a port area or operation. A review is presented in different approaches on human and environmental risks in port area. On the other hand, there is no specific risk management method or fi＇amework to cope with threats and hazards regarding on port machines or material accidents and port assets damages or losses. This paper presents a risk management methodology, seeking to investigate a process of assessing the assets hazards and damages into the domain of port container terminal, by taking into account its different factors and their mutual influences. This methodology constitutes a decision support framework that will be used to conduct port to port risk evaluations or to assess a whole port＇s and terminal＇s risk level in the critical field of assets damages and losses, in order to facilitate improvement strategies. An empirical study is contacted for the years of 2003-2012, in order to provide evidence for risk assessment and management in an economic effective way, regarding port assets damages and losses, at the Port Container Terminal of Piraeus in Greece.

Amidst the ever increasing demand for the unhindered flow of freight throughout the world, seaport safety is emerging as a critical factor which increasingly dictates the need to establish a proactive approach towards addressing the associated risks rather than the traditional reactive response to port accidents. This paper proposes and presents a proactive methodology for port safety risk assessment （including the techno-economically effective prioritized control） which constitutes an adaptation of the FSA （Formal Safety Assessment） for ships. The ability of the proposed methodology to offer this standardized approach for PRA （Port Risk Assessment） is demonstrated through reference to the container terminal of the Greek Port of Thessalonica, for which an empirical study is contacted utilizing the historical record of encountered accidents with regard to their frequency of occurrence and their impact upon the human and environmental resources of the port.

The aim of the present study is to assess the efficacy of the methods used in a HACCP system by measuring the Total Viable Count (TVC) and Coliforms, after cleaning and disinfecting the surfaces used and also by monitoring TVC and enterobacteriaceae of hot and cold meals. In order to evaluate the appropriateness of the surfaces used, samples were obtained from kitchens of 37 Greek hotels/resorts, all of which operated a documented HACCP safety management scheme, while the samples of hot and cold meals were selected from the menu of a catering unit and collected from the actual point of hot and cold dishes banquette at the start time (time 0) and after 4 hours. The developed colonies were counted. The results showed that only 13.5% of the hotels presented surfaces without any TVC or coliforms and 86.5% of the hotels had surfaces with TVC or coliforms or both above the limits. However, 75.8% of the total surfaces examined were acceptable for TVC and 81.9% of the surfaces examined were coliforms. Our microbiological monitoring of food showed that the TVC content of hot meal samples after 4 hours of display (above 60℃) was not significantly different from the TVC content of the aforementioned samples at time 0, while in cold meals TVC and enterobacteriaceae content had significantly risen after 4 hours of display (below 5℃).Conclusively, insufficient application of disinfection and ineffective surface and equipment cleaning programs were found. Additionally, cold meals are more vulnerable than hot meals in developing TVC and enterobacteriaceae.
