Protective behaviors regarding coastal flooding risk in a context of climate change

The physical vulnerability of coastal areas due to rising sea level and the flooding risk consequent,does not guarantee the implementation of protective behaviors by these risk zones’*** study aims to establish the link between the willingness to carry out protective behaviors and physical and perceived indicators of vulnerability.A typology of coastal flooding vulnerability,uses various physical indicators and their perceived counterparts which have been collected from 490 inhabitants of Cartagena(Colombia,declared world heritage of humanity by UNeSCO in 1984),resident in areas of coastal flooding *** item-response theory(IRT)approach has been *** results reveal that the implementation of protective behaviors is more related to perceived indicators,such as distance to the sea,than to actual physical *** observe that physical vulnerability is linked to the intention to carry out protective *** presence of a defensive structure against coastal flooding could be considered as a visual cue and be a good predictor of the willingness to carry out protective *** the contrary,people in the most vulnerable situation(single-storey house)do not demonstrate a higher level of willingness to carry out protective behavior,as well of participants who lived in residential buildings which have demonstrated lower level of willingness to carry out such ***,vulnerability of the house is not seen as a criterion that encourages participants to better protect themselves.

The ever-increasing need for sustainable development requires advanced battery techniques beyond the current generation of lithium ion *** all candidates being explored,lithium-sulfur batteries are a very promising system to be commercialized in the near *** this end,the development of lithium sulfide(Li_(2)S)nanocrystal-based cathodes has received tremendous effort and witnessed multiple *** from the focus on performance improvement in previous reviews,this review summarizes the research progress in line with the approaches of materials synthesis and electrode *** key chemistry,operation procedure,materials characterizations and performance assessments are all given a balanced ***,all approaches are collectively analyzed along the lines of six criteria towards practical applications,i.e.,electrode performance,materials quality,resources sustainability,production cost,operation procedure,and consumed ***,some perspective viewpoints on the future research directions are offered.

A rationale for the development of thermally stable nanostructured CeO_2-ZrO_2-containing mixed oxides

CeO2-ZeO2 solid solutions are extensively used as oxygen storage promoters in the current automotive three-way catalysts. High thermal stability of the textural properties is one of the most important requirements for practical application since temperatures up to 1273 K are easily experienced by these materials under real working conditions. In the present paper, we investigated how hydrothermal treatments applied to cakes of doped and undoped ZrO2-rich CeO2-ZrO2 precursors might improve the thermal stability of the final CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution. A rationale was developed that allowed to correlate the morphology of the hydrothermaUy treated cake with the thermal stability at 1273 K of the final product, which did not depend on the composition of the mixed oxides.

Comparison of properties of traditional and accelerated carbonated solidified/stabilized contaminated soils

The investigation of the long-term performance of solidified/stabilized （S/S） contaminated soils was carried out in a trial site in southeast UK. The soils were exposed to the maximum natural weathering for four years and sampled at various depths in a controlled manner. The chemical properties （e.g., degree of carbonation （DOC）, pH, electrical conductivity （eC）） and physical properties （e.g., moisture content （MC）, liquid limit CLL）, plastic limit （PL）, plasticity index （PI）） of the samples untreated and treated with the traditional and accelerated carbonated S/S processes were analyzed. Their variations on the depths of the soils were also studied. The result showed that the broad geotechnical properties of the soils, manifested in their PIs, were related to the concentration of the water soluble ions and in particular the free calcium ions. The samples treated with the accelerated carbonation technology （ACT）, and the untreated samples contained limited number of free calcium ions in solutions and consequently interacted with waters in a similar way. Compared with the traditional cement-based S/S technology, e.g., treatment with ordinary portland cement （OPC） or envirOceM, ACT caused the increase of the PI of the treated soil and made it more stable during long-term weathering. The PI values for the four soils ascended according to the order： the envirOceM soil, the OPC soil, the ACT soil, and the untreated soil while their pH and eC values descended according to the same order.

Probiotic bacteria change escherichia coli-induced gene expression in cultured colonocytes:Implications in intestinal pathophysiology

AIM: To investigate the change in eukaryotic gene expression profile in Caco-2 cells after infection with strains of escherichia coli and commensal probiotic bacteria. MeTHODS: A 19 200 gene/expressed sequence tag gene chip was used to examine expression of genes after infection of Caco-2 cells with strains of normal flora e. coli,Lactobacillus plantarum,and a combination of the two. ReSULTS: The cDNA microarray revealed up-regulation of 155 and down-regulation of 177 genes by e. coli . L. plantarum up-regulated 45 and down-regulated 36 genes. During mixed infection,27 genes were up-regulated and 59 were down-regulated,with nullification of stimulatory/inhibitory effects on most of the genes. expression of several new genes was noted in this group. CONCLUSION: The commensal bacterial strains used in this study induced the expression of a large number of genes in colonocyte-like cultured cells and changed the expression of several genes involved in important cellular processes such as regulation of transcription,protein biosynthesis,metabolism,cell adhesion,ubiquitination,and apoptosis. Such changes induced by the presence of probiotic bacteria may shape the physiologic and pathologic responses they trigger in the host.

Prime waterfront real estate： Apple snails choose wild taro for oviposition sites

While difficult to prevent introductions, scientific research can help guide control efforts of exotic, invasive species. South American island apple snails Pomacea insularum have quickly spread across the United States Gulf Coast and few control measures exist to delay their spread. Usually occupying cryptic benthic habitats, female apple snails crawl out of the water to de-posit large, bright pink egg clutches on emergent objects. To help identify the most likely place to find and remove clutches, we conducted four lab experiments to investigate what specific object qualifies （i.e. material; shape and height; plant species; natural and artificial） attracted P. insularum females to lay clutches. In our fourth experiment, we specifically examined the relationship between female size and reproductive output. To further understand reproductive output, we quantified experimental clutch chara-cteristics （height above water, dimensions, mass, approximate volume, number of eggs, hatching efficiency）. Pomacea insu-larum females laid more clutches on plant material, chose round over flat surfaces and failed to differentiate between tall and short structures. In comparison to a common native plant in the eastern US, Pontederia cordata, snails clearly preferred to lay clutches on a widely distributed exotic, invasive plant （wild taro, Colocasia esculenta）. Unexpectedly, smaller snails showed higher overall total fecundity as well as more eggs per clutch than larger snails. Therefore, hand removal efforts of large fe-males may not be enough to slow down clutch production. Collectively, our results indicate that conservationists and managers should search emergent plants for P. insularum clutches carefully to guard against established populations [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 630-641, 2011].

为利用特定诱导因子Oct4、Sox2和SV40T的体外转录mRNA实现安全的成纤维细胞重编程,本研究成功构建了特定诱导因子Oct4、Sox2和SV40T的mRNA体外转录载体,并对体外转录mRNA进行了5′和3′端加工修饰;进行了诱导因子mRNA的293和IMR90细胞转染试验,利用免疫细胞化学、免疫荧光和Real-Time PCR分别检测了Oct4、Sox2、SV40T和Nanog的表达情况。结果显示,以上2种细胞以Oct4∶Sox2∶SV40T=2∶1∶1的mRNA比例转染后均表达这3种特定诱导因子,且相应蛋白都正确地定位在细胞核上。转染细胞中Oct4和Nanog的表达都特异性地增高。结果提示,3种诱导因子的体外转录mRNA能够在体内协同作用,激活细胞内源性干性标志基因Nanog的表达,为开启重编程过程奠定了坚实的基础。
