Since the d.scovery of Systemin in tomatoes in 1991, many ad.itional peptid. hormones have been d.scovered.in plants. Plant peptid. hormones typically start as small precursor pro- teins （-100a.a.）, which includ. N-terminal secretory or anchor sequences, and.are post-translationally processed.into a smaller hormonally active peptid. （on the range of 5-18 a.a.）. To d.te, peptid. hormones have been shown to have d.verse functions in plants, includ.ng nearly every aspect of d.velop- ment and.morphogenesis. here, we d.scuss recent reports regard.ng the CLV3/ESR-RELATEd.（CLE） and.ROOT GROWTH FACTOR （RGF） families of peptid. hormones.

d.ar Ed.tor, The plant hormone ind.le-3-acetic acid.（IAA） has long been used.in plant culture med.a for practical applications and.sci- entific inquiries. The use of IAA is complicated.by the fact that IAA is a photo-labile compound. In Murashige and.Skoog （MS） plant med.a （Murashige and.Skoog, 1962）, the concen- trations of salts and.mineral nutrients are known to hasten the photod.grad.tion of IAA und.r white light （d.nlap and.Robacker, 1988）. This d.grad.tion can be virtually eliminated.by the use of a yellow-colored.light filter that removes UV, violet, and.some of the blue wavelengths from the incid.nt light （Stasinopoulos and.Hangarter, 1990）. However, the use of yellow light clearly affects the quality of light that the plants und.r stud. receive. In ad.ition to applications in plants, IAA has been used.in human health applications.

Vitamin B6 （vitB6） serves as an essential cofactor for more than 140 enzymes. Pyrid.xal 5＇-phosphate （PLP）, active cofactor form of vitB6, can be photolytically d.stroyed.by trace amounts of ultraviolet-B （UV-B）. How sun-exposed.organisms cope with PLP photosensitivity and.mod.late vitB6 homeostasis is currently unknown. We previously reported.on two Arabid.psis mutants, rusl and.rus2, that are hypersensitive to trace amounts of UV-B light. We performed.mutagenesis screens for second.site suppressors of the rus mutant phenotype and.id.ntified.mutations in the ASPARTATE AMINOTRANSFERASE2 （ASP2） gene. ASP2 encod.s for cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase （AAT）, a PLP-d.pend.nt enzyme that plays a key role in carbon and.nitrogen metabolism. Genetic analyses have shown that specific amino acid.substitutions in ASP2 overrid. the phenotypes of rusl and.rus2 single mutants as well as rusl rus2 d.uble mutant. These substitutions, all shown to resid. at specific positions in the PLP-bind.ng pocket, resulted.in no PLP bind.ng. Ad.itional asp2 mutants that abolish AAT enzymatic activity, but which alter amino acid. outsid. of the PLP-bind.ng pocket, fail to suppress the rus phenotype. Furthermore, exogenously ad.ing vitB6 in growth med.a can rescue both rusl and.rus2. Our d.ta suggest that AAT plays a role in vitB6 homeostasis in Arabid.psis.
