Objective:The purpose of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of alvimopan,a novel peripher.l.y acting mu-opioid receptor antagonist,in patients who undergo simple total abdominal hysterectomy. Study design:Women (n = 519)-were randomized (4:1) to receive alvimopan 12 mg (n = 413) or placebo (n = 106)≥2 hours before the operation then twice daily for 7 days (hospital and home). Adverse events were monitored up to 30 days after the last dose of study drug was administered. Efficacy was assessed for 7 postoperative days. results:Over.l.,the most common adverse events were nausea,vomiting,and constipation; rse events. Alvimopan significantly accelerated the time to first bowel movement (hazard ratio,2.33; P rage time to first bowel movement was reduced by 22 hours,with more frequent bowel movement and better bowel movement quality found in the treatment cohort. Conclusion:Alvimopan has a safety profile that is similar to that of placebo and provides significantly improved lower gastrointestinal recovery in women who undergo simple total abdominal hysterectomy.

A procedure for purification of single walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) grown by the chemical vapour deposition(CVD) of carbon monooxide has been developed. Based on the result from TGA/DTA of as prepared sample, the oxidation temperature was determined. The process included sonication, oxidation and acid washing steps. The purity and yield after purification were determined and estimated by TEM. Moreover, for the first time, a loop structure for CVD SWNTs has been observed.

Here, we report a study of ion transport across graphene oxide （GO） membranes of various thicknesses, made by vacuum filtration of GO aqueous solutions. The diffusive transport rates of two charge-equivalent ruthenium complex ions ru（bpy）3^2＋ and ru（phen）32% with a sub-angstrom size difference, are distinguishable through GO membranes and their ratio can be a unique tool for probing the transport-r.l.vant pore structures. Pore and slit-dominant hindered diffusion models are presented and corr.l.ted to experimental results. Our analysis suggests that ion transport is mostly facilitated by large pores （larger than 1.75 nm in diameter） in the r.l.tively thin GO membranes, while slits formed by GO stacking （less than 1.42 nm in width） become dominant only in thick membranes. By grafting PEG molecules to the later.l.plane of GO sheets, membranes with enlarged interlayer spacing were engineered, which showed drastically increased ion transport rates and lower distinction among the two ruthenium complex ions, consistent with the prediction by the slit-dominant steric hindered diffusion model.

Production of heat-shock proteins （Hsps） is a key adaptation to acute heat stress and will be important in determining plant responses to climate change. Further, intraspecifc variation in Hsps, which will influence species-level response to global warming, has rar.l. been examined in natur.l.y occurring plants. To understand intraspecific variation in plant Hsps and its r.l.vance to global warming, we examined Hsp content and thermotolerance in five natur.l.y occurring populations of Chenopodium album l. from contrasting thermal environments grown at low and high temperatures. As expected, Hsp accumulation varied between populations, but this was r.l.ted more to habitat variability than to mean temperature. Unexpectedly, Hsp accumulation decreased with increasing variability of habitat temperatures. Hsp accumulation also decreased with increased experimental growth temperatures. Physiological thermotolerance was partitioned into basal and induced components. As with Hsps, induced thermotolerance decreased with increasing temperature variability. Thus, populations native to the more stressful habitats, or grown at higher temperatures, had lower Hsp levels and induced thermotolerance, suggesting a greater r.l.ance on basal mechanisms for thermotolerance. These results suggest that future global climate change will differentially impact ecotypes within species, possibly by selecting for increased basal versus inducible thermotolerance.

The polyphagous shot hole borer （PSHB）, Euwallacea sp., was first detected in 2003 in los Angeles County, California, USA. recently, this invasive species has become a major pest of many hardwood trees in urban and wildland forests throughout southern California. PSHB is nearly identical in morphology and life history to the tea shot hole borer （TSHB）, Euwallaceafornicatus, an invasive pest of hardwoods in Florida, USA and many other parts of the world. However, molecular studies have suggested that the taxa are different species. We conducted morphometric and chemical analyses of the pheno- types of Euwallacea sp. collected in southern California （los Angeles County） and E. fornicatus collected in Florida （Miami-Dade County）. Our analyses indicated that PSHB has 3 larval instars. The third larval instar was separated from the first 2 instars by head capsule width with 0 probability of misclassification. The body length, head width, and pronotal width of PSHB adult males were significantly less than those of females. Head width and pronotal width of female PSHB were significantly less than those of female TSHB. In contrast, body length, and ratio of body length to pronotal width of female PSHB were significantly greater than those of female TSHB. However, females of these 2 species could not be separated completely by these 4 measurements because of the overlapping ranges. Cuticular hydrocarbons detected in both species were exclusively alkanes （i.e., n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes, and trimethylalkanes）. Cuticular hydro- carbon profiles of PSHB males and females were similar, but they both differed from that of TSHB females. Cuticular hydrocarbons of PSHB were predominantly internally branched dimethylalkanes with backbones of 31 and 33 carbons, whereas cuticular hydro- carbons of TSHB females were dominated by internally branched monomethylalkanes and dimethylalkanes with backbones of 28 and 29 carbons. Complications from Plaque versus Proton Beam Therapy for Choroidal Melanoma: A Qualitative Systematic review

Plaque brachytherapy has been a mainstay of treatment for choroidal melanoma to achieve intraocular tumor contr.l. The most common radioisotopes used for treating smaller sized tumors are Iodine-125 in North America and ruthenium-106 in Europe. Proton beam radiotherapy is available at a few centers and may also be used to achieve local tumor contr.l. Both plaque and proton beam therapy are known to be associated with a range of complications that may affect visual outcome and quality of life. These include radiation retinopathy, optic neuropathy, neovascular glaucoma and local treatment failure, requiring enucleation. While differences in the rates of these complications have not been well established in the literature for patients treated with plaque versus proton beam therapy for choroidal melanoma, certain geographic regions prefer one treatment modality over the other. The purpose of this qualitative systematic review was to compare and contrast reported complications that developed with plaque and proton beam therapy for the treatment of choroidal melanoma in studies published over a ten-year period. reported rates suggest that patients with proton beam therapy had potentially higher rates of complications, including vision loss, enucleation, and neovascular glaucoma compared to those with plaque therapy. The rates of optic neuropathy, radiation retinopathy, and cataract formation were widely variable for the two treatment modalities and rates of metastasis and metastasis-free survival appeared similar with both treatments. The most common reported predictors of ocular complications following both types of therapy were tumor distance from the optic nerve, tumor thickness, and radiation dose, suggesting that inherent tumor characteristics play a r.l. in visual prognosis.
