Neutron transmission imaging with a portable D-T neutron generator

Purpose A portable fast-neutron imaging system is being developed to provide complementary information to field X-ray *** include inspection of vehicles and infrastructure for corrosion,measurement of material levels in containers,and inspection of munitions and suspicious *** fast-neuron imaging generally provides lower imaging resolution compared to X-rays,fast-neutron interaction cross-sections have a weak dependence on material *** enables imaging of low-Z materials inside high-Z ***,we discuss the limitations and current improvements in fast-neuron *** Limitations in portable fast-neutron imaging systems include low D-T neutron generator output,low light pro-duction in ZnS(Cu)imaging scintillators,low resolution due to scintillator thickness and D-T spot size,and digital-panel darknoise that varies in time and position and that can be 100×larger than the neutron *** have made improvements in these areas through development of a segmented high light yield scintillator,panel noise mitigation techniques,and testing of new high-output,small spot size D-T neutron *** The segmented high light yield fast-neutron scintillator demonstrated 5×increase in light compared to ZnS(Cu).An additional 2×improvement in signal-to-noise was demonstrated with panel-noise mitigation *** MCNP calculations also show good agreement with neutron imaging results Conclusions We have demonstrated improvements in fast-neutron imaging through development of a segmented high light yield neutron scintillator,mitigation of digital panel noise,and preliminary testing with new high-output,small spot size D-T neutron *** have also demonstrated good results modeling fast-neutron images and scatter effects using MCNP.

The value of community science data to analyze long-term avian trends in understudied regions:The state of birds in Türkiye

Recent studies have revealed concerning declines in bird populations in Europe and other parts of the *** understudied but biodiverse regions,especially those that are located along key migratory flyways,there is an unmet need to evaluate the status of resident and migratory birdlife for avian conservation *** is especially urgent at a time when recent regional studies have highlighted the scale of the decline of the European and Palearctic *** growing community science datasets may help bridge the gaps in our understanding of long-term regional avifaunal *** this study,we used eBird data submitted by observers in Türkiye to undertake the first long-term assessment of the state of the country’s birds from 2001 to *** evaluated population trends based on presence-absence data of species to determine if any birds have significantly increased or decreased in the country so far this *** provide a list of trends for 418 bird species that had large enough sample sizes of eBird observations from Türkiye,and highlight which species have significantly declined or *** found that 63 species have significantly declined in detection while 120 have significantly increased during the study *** findings provide a baseline for the future monitoring of Türkiye’s birds and help contextualize population changes of birds in Türkiye against those occurring at the continental(Palearctic)***,we include movement classifications for all of the bird species in this *** also provide a framework to effectively use eBird data to assess long-term avifaunal changes at the country-level in other understudied ***,we highlight ways in which eBirders in Türkiye and elsewhere can strengthen the quality and value of community ornithology data for population assessments and avian conservation ecology.

Longitudinal Changes in Athletic Performance in Competitive Figure Skaters

Purpose To measure changes in strength,power,and agility over consecutive seasons based on competition level in figure *** A total of 197 competitive singles figure skaters(age range=9-25 years old)completed combines with United States Figure Skating on two consecutive seasons between 2011 and *** either remained in the same competitive on-ice level or increased by one level on consecutive *** athletes completed the hexagon agility test,maximal verti-cal jump,timed tuck jumps,push-ups,and bent knee ***-measures analyses of variance separated by sex with Tukey’s post hoc were performed for each dependent variable and Cohen’s d effect sizes were calculated for all significant *** Female skaters who remained in the same level demonstrated improved performance on vertical jump(3.66 cm higher),timed tuck jumps(3.77 more jumps),v-ups(1.59 more v-ups),and hexagon jump(1.17 s faster).There was an interaction for female skaters who remained in the same level(P=0.004),with senior and junior levels outperforming inter-mediate level skaters on the hexagon jump *** skaters who increased level demonstrated improved performance on the vertical jump(2.24 cm higher),hexagon jump(1.16 cm faster),and tuck jump(3.03 more jumps).Male skaters did not demonstrate any changes in performance except v-ups(2.86 more v-ups)for those who increased *** The greatest changes were in lower level female skaters who remained in the same level,supporting the impor-tance of participating in strength and conditioning programs earlier in skating careers to maximize athleticism before reaching the senior level,when changes in off-ice performance plateau.

Pharyngeal trauma: Two unique case reports

The neck is a complex pathway for numerous critical structures and is defined by layers of fascial planes and spaces. Traumatic interruption of these planes can occur with injury to any of the mucosal structures within the head and neck, and is often seen as a consequence of pharyngeal injury. Here, the identification and management of two interesting and unique cases of penetrating oropharyngeal trauma are discussed: oropharyngeal trauma following abuse, and a self-inflicted pharyngeal wound with subsequent foreign body ingestion. We also review the literature regarding diagnosis, treatment, and management of traumatic pharyngeal perforation, and discuss possible complications.

The Feasibility and Economic Potential of Geoduck Aquaculture in Neah Bay, Washington

The geoduck clam, Panopea abrupta, is an economically important species and mainly cultured in the Southern Puget Sound of Washington State. There are no examples of intertidal geoduck aquaculture in Neah Bay. Since 2011, the Makah Fisheries Management (MFM) has started a pilot project supported by the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Business Enterprise Grant (USDA-RBEG). The MFM aquaculture practice and results showed that the Neah Bay beaches are feasible for intertidal geoduck aquaculture, and have the proper conditions to produce high quality geoduck clams. As compared to finfish culture, there is little environmental concern for geoduck aquaculture due to the natural seawater fluctuation (no artificial feeding) and the intertidal nature (no genetic mixing). This advantage provides the opportunity for community members of all backgrounds to partake in the aquaculture process, with low investment costs for establishing a family-based geoduck farming business. Overall, the high market value and the economic potential make geoduck aquaculture an ideal candidate in development of remote and rural areas along the Washington coast.
