The investigation of the interplay between geometry and nonlinearity may open the road to the control of extreme waves. We study three-dimensional localization and dispersive shocks in a bent cigar shaped potential by the nonlinear schro¨ dinger equation. At high bending and high nonlinearity, topological trapping is frustrated by the generation of curved wave-breaking. Four-dimensional parallel simulations confirm the theoretical model. This work may contribute to novel devices based on geometrically constrained highly nonlinear dynamics and tests and analogs of fundamental physical theories in curved space.

Reporter genes produce a protein product in transfected cells that can be easily measured in intact or lysed cells and they have been extensively used in numerous basic and applied research *** the past 10 years,reporter gene assays have been widely accepted and used for analysis of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and related dioxin-like compounds in various types of matrices,such as biological,environmental,food and feed samples,given that high-resolution instrumental analysis techniques are impractical for large-scale screening *** most sensitive cell-based reporter gene bioassay systems developed are the mechanism-based CALUX(Chemically Activated Luciferase Expression) and CAFLUX(Chemically Activated Fluorescent Expression) bioassays,which utilize recombinant cell lines containing stably transfected dioxin(AhR) responsive firefly luciferase or enhanced green fluorescent protein(EGFP) reporter genes,*** the current CALUX and CAFLUX bioassays are very sensitive,increasing their lower limit of sensitivity,magnitude of response and dynamic range for chemical detection would significantly increase their utility,particularly for those samples that contain low levels of dioxin-like HAHs(i.e.,serum) .In this study,we report that the addition of modulators of cell signaling pathways or modification of cell culture conditions results in significant improvement in the magnitude and overall responsiveness of the existing CALUX and CAFLUX cell bioassays.

We present a search strategy for both Dirac and Majorana sterile neutrinos from the purely leptonic decays of W^±→e^±e^±μ ν and μ^±^±e ν at the 14 TeV LHC. The discovery and exclusion limits for sterile neutrinos are shown using both the Cut-and-Count（CC） and Multi-Variate Analysis（MVA） methods. We also discriminate between Dirac and Majorana sterile neutrinos by exploiting a set of kinematic observables which differ between the Dirac and Majorana cases. We find that the MVA method, compared to the more common CC method, can greatly enhance the discovery and discrimination limits. Two benchmark points with sterile neutrino mass m N =20 GeV and 50 GeV are tested. For an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb^-1, sterile neutrinos can be found with 5σ significance if heavy-to-light neutrino mixings ｜U_（Ne）｜^2~｜U_（Nμ）｜^2~10^-6, while Majorana vs. Dirac discrimination can be reached if at least one of the mixings is of order 10^-5.

The study of animal personality has attracted considerable attention, as it has revealed a number of similarities in personality between humans and several nonhuman species. At the same time the adaptive value and evolutionary maintenance of different personalities are the subject of debate. since Pavlov＇s work on dogs, students of comparative cognition have been aware that animals display vast individual differences on cognitive tasks, and that these differences may not be entirely accounted for differences in cognitive abilities. Here, we argue that personality is an important source of variation that may affect cognitive performance and we hypothesise mutual influences between personality and cognition across an individual＇s lifespan. In particular, we suggest that： 1） personality profiles may be markers of different cognitive styles; 2） success or failure in cognitive tasks could affect different personalities differently; 3） ontogenetic changes of personality profiles could be reflected in changes in cognitive performance. The study of such interplay has implications in animal welfare as well as in neuroscience and in translational medicine [Current Zoology 57 （4）： 491-498, 2011].

This paper aims to systematically investigate the cataracting-centrifuging transition in a rotary drum involving spherical and nonspherical particles by using the Multiphase Granular Eulerian Model(MGEM).The effects of drum length and particle shape on the cataracting-centrifuging transition behavior were *** results showed that drum length plays an important role in the cataracting-centrifuging transition,although most related works in the literature do not consider *** particle shape also significantly affects the cataracting-centrifuging transition *** particles required lower rotation speeds than spherical particles to reach the centrifuging *** particle shape was shown to be related to the critical solid fraction(asc)from schaeffer’s model,although further investigations are required to completely correlate particle spherecity with critical solid volume fractions.

Cooling technology of gas turbine blades,primarily ensured via internal forced convection,is aimed towards withdrawing thermal energy from the *** promote heat exchange,the walls of internal cooling passages are lined with repeated geometrical flow disturbance elements and surface *** the heat transfer at the expense of increased pressure loss;the goal is to obtain the highest possible cooling effectiveness at the lowest possible pressure drop *** cooling channel heat transfer problem involves convection in the fluid domain and conduction in the *** coupled behavior is known as conjugate heat *** experimental study models the effects of conduction coupling on convective heat transfer by applying iso-heat-flux boundary condition at the external side of a scaled serpentine *** involve local temperature measurements performed by Infrared Thermography over flat and ribbed slab *** number distributions along the wetted surface are obtained by means of heat flux distributions,computed from an energy balance within the metal *** the flat plate experiments,the effect of conjugate boundary condition on heat transfer is estimated to be in the order of 3%.In the ribbed channel case,the normalized Nusselt number distributions are compared with the basic flow *** the findings with other conjugate and convective iso-heat-flux literature,a high degree of overall correlation is evident.

Half-metallicity(HM)offers great potential for engineering spintronic applications,yet only few magnetic materials present metallicity in just one spin *** addition,most HM systems become magnetically disordered at temperatures well below ambient conditions,which further hinders the development of spin-based electronic ***,we use first-principles methods based on density functional theory(DFT)to investigate the electronic,magnetic,structural,mixing,and vibrational properties of 90 XYZ half-Heusler(HH)alloys(X=Li,Na,K,Rb,Cs;Y=V,Nb,Ta;Z=si,Ge,sn,s,se,Te).We disclose a total of 28 new HH compounds that are ferromagnetic,vibrationally stable,and HM,with semiconductor band gaps in the range of 1-4 eV and HM band gaps of 0.2-0.8 *** performing Monte Carlo simulations of a spin Heisenberg model fitted to DFT energies,we estimate the Curie temperature,T_(C),of each HM *** find that 17 HH HM remain magnetically ordered at and above room temperature,namely,300≤T_(C)≤450 K,with total magnetic moments of 2 and 4 mB.A further materials sieve based on zero-temperature mixing energies let us to conclude 5 overall promising HH HM that remain magnetically ordered at and above room temperature:NaVsi,RbVTe,CsVs,CsVse,and *** also predict 2 semiconductor materials that are ferromagnetic at ambient conditions:LiVsi and LiVGe.
