An aqueous extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan alters the labeling of blood constituents with Technetium-99m

The Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is a formula of a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat asthma patients and has been shown to have several important properties,such as antioxidant and free radical scavenging *** influence of an extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m was *** blood(Wistar rats) was incubated with the extract,stannous chloride and technetium-99m,as sodium *** were centrifuged and aliquots of plasma and blood cells were separated and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid,to obtain soluble and insoluble fractions of the blood *** percentage of radioactivity(%ATI) in all the fractions was *** analysis of the results shows that the extract at the highest concentration used(70 mg/mL) decreased significantly(Pm 96.48 ± 1.19 to 54.46 ± 7.38) on blood cells compartment,(from 81.11 ± 4.15 to 61.33 ± 4.74) on insoluble fractions of blood cells and(from 65.91 ± 2.44 to 13.15 ± 3.62) on insoluble fractions of *** conclusion,the results suggest that the substances present on this extract can alter this labeling process,probably due to(i) redox properties(antioxidant and chelator activities) and/or(ii) specific actions in the binding sites where the 99mTc would be bound on the blood *** a consequence,precaution is suggested on the interpretation of the nuclear medicine results from performed with blood constituents labeled with 99m Tc in patients that have undertaken LWDHW,although the current findings were obtained in experimental animal models.

microalgae are widely used in the pharmaceutical and energy industries,therefore the conditions for their cultivation and extraction methods play an important role in the profiling and acquisition of *** efficiency of lipid extraction from microalgae has attracted great interest from industry because of the wide variety of lipids and amounts that can be *** obliquus(Scenedesmus obliquus UTEX 393)was used in this *** was cultivated in Bold 3N medium modified with 75%nitrogen at 25℃,pH 6.8,125 r/min and a photoperiod of 18/6 h and illuminated with white light provided by a Light-Emitting Diode Surface mount Device extensions(LED SmD)with an intensity of 1200μE/(m^(2)·s).The cells were stained with the Red Nile(RN)technique to indicate lipid *** extraction methods were compared,classical,microwave(mW),Soxhlet,and ultrasound(US),using the same solvent proportions(hexane:chloroform:methanol=1:2:3).All samples were analyzed with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR)and Gas Chromatography coupled to mass Spectrometry(GC-mS).The results showed:1)lipid production detected by RN was consistent with microalgal growth;2)the mW technique was the best extraction method,according to the statistical analysis through Randomized Complete Block(RCB)design and performance of 4.6%;and 3)the presence of saturated and unsaturated acids was indicated by FTIR ***-mS was able to identify palmitic and linoleic acids as the likely major constituents of the sample.

mercury in an ultraoligotrophic North Patagonian Andean lake (Argentina): Concentration patterns in different components of the water column

The deep, ultraoligotrophic piedmont lakes of Northern Patagonia （Argentina） are located in pristine and barely impacted areas, along a wide latitudinal range. Several studies have reported moderate to high total mercury （Hg） concentrations and contrasting methylmercury （CH3Hg＋） production in different lake compartments. Sources of Hg for western Patagonian terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are still not clear; while point sources can be ruled out and atmospheric deposition is a plausible source, along with contribution from active volcanic areas of the Andes. In this investigation, we reported a noticeably seasonal, spatial （between lake branches）, and vertical （between water column strata） heterogeneity in the total Hg concentrations found in the pelagic zone of Lake moreno. Sterile water samples taken in a depth profile of the lake showed moderate to high concentrations of CH3Hg＋ in autumn with a decreasing trend with depth. Our results indicated that Hg is largely allocated in the plankton fraction between 10–53 μm; which dominated within the euphotic （epilimnetic） zone of the lake due to the high densities attained by two species of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium. The 53–200 μm planktonic size fraction （comprising rotifers, ciliates and immature stages of crustaceans） and the 200 μm fraction （calanoid copepods and cladocerans） were found to bear strikingly lower total Hg concentrations, suggesting that the magnification of Hg at the planktonic consumer level is negligible.

Effects of combined cannabidiol(CBD)and hops(Humulus lupulus)terpene extract treatment on RAW 264.7 macrophage viability and inflammatory markers

This study investigates the potential of cannabidiol(CBD),one major cannabinoid of the plant Cannabis sativa,alone and in combination with a terpene-enriched extract from Humulus lupulus(“Hops 1”),on the LPS-response of RAW 264.7 macrophages as an established in vitro model of *** the present study,we could support earlier findings of the anti-inflammatory potential of CBD,which showed a dose-dependent[0-5μm]reduction in nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α)released by LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 ***,we observed an additive anti-inflammatory effect after combined CBD[5μm]and hops extract[40μg/mL]*** combination of CBD and Hops 1 showed effects in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells superior to the single sub-stance treatments and akin to the control ***,cellular CBD uptake increased dose-depend-ently in the presence of terpenes from Hops 1 *** anti-inflammatory effect of CBD and its cellular uptake positively correlated with terpene concentration,as indicated by comparison with a hemp extract containing both CBD and *** findings may contribute to the postulations for the so-called“entourage effect”between cannabinoids and terpenes and support the potential of CBD combined with phytomolecules from a non-cannabi-noid source,such as hops,for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

BACKGROUND Cholesterol is related to improvements in the rate of sustained virological response and a robust immune response against the hepatitis C virus(HCV).APOE gene polymorphisms regulate cholesterol levels modifying the course of the HCV *** relationship between cholesterol,APOE alleles,and the outcome of HCV infection has not been evaluated in the admixed population of *** To investigate the role of APOE-ε2,-ε3,and-ε4 alleles and the metabolic profile in the outcome of HCV *** A total of 299 treatment-na?ve HCV patients were included in this retrospective *** were stratified in chronic hepatitis C(CHC)(n=206)and spontaneous clearance(SC)(n=93).A clinical record was *** tests were assessed by dry chemistry *** genotypes were determined using a Real-Time polymerase chain reaction *** Total cholesterol,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-c),triglycerides,and hypercholesterolemia were higher in SC than CHC patients as well as the frequency of the APOEε4 allele(12.4%vs 7.3%).SC patients were overweight(54.8%).Theε4 allele was associated with SC(OR=0.55,95%CI:0.31-0.98,P=0.042)and mild fibrosis(F1-F2)in CHC patients(OR 0.091,95%CI 0.01-0.75,P=0.020).LDL-c≥101.5 mg/dL(OR=0.20,95%CI:0.10-0.41,PmI≥26.6 kg/m2(OR=0.37,95%CI:0.18-0.76,P<0.001)were associated with SC status;while ALT≥50.5 IU/L was negatively associated(OR=5.67,95%CI:2.69-11.97,P<0.001).CONCLUSION In SC patients,the APOEε4 allele and LDL-c conferred a protective effect in the course of the HCV infection in the context of excess body weight.

Conversion from calcineurin inhibitors to mTOR inhibitors stabilizes diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy after liver transplant

AIm: To investigate if conversion to the mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors(mTORi) improves renal function in diabetic and/or hypertensive liver transplant patients immunosuppressed with tacrolimus or ***: The study included 86 liver graft recipients immunosuppressed with mTORi treatment after orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT), including all liver recipients with worsening renal function before conversion to mTORi(n = 55 patients) and recipients with normal renal function who converted to m TORi for other reasons(n = 31 patients). We identified patients with diabetes mellitus(n = 28), arterial hypertension(n = 27), proteinuria(n = 27) and all three factors(n = 8)(some patients have hypertension and diabetes and no proteinuria). The primary endpoint was evolution in renal function defined as the development in plasma creatinine as a function of diabetes mellitus(Dm), hypertension(HT) or proteinuria. We required elevated serum creatinine for at least two weeks to define renal ***: Only patients that converted because of renal failure with plasma creatinine levels > 1.5 mg/dL showed an improvement of renal function(2.14 to 1.77 mg/dL)(P = 0.02). Patients with Dm showed no improvement of serum creatinine levels(1.31 mg/dL to 1.37 mg/dL) compared with non Dm patients(1.31 mg/dL to 1.15 mg/dL)(P = 0.01), HT patients(1.48 mg/dL to 1.5 mg/dL) with non HT patients(1.21mg/d L to 1.08 mg/dL) and patients with proteinuria(1.44 mg/dL to 1.41 mg/dL) and no proteinuria(1.31 mg/dL to 1.11 mg/dL). CONCLUSION: In OLT recipients with diabetes or hypertensive nephropathy, conversion to m TORi does not improve renal function but stabilizes plasma levels of creatinine. Proteinuria is not a contraindication to conversion to m TORi; it also stabilizes renal function. Conversion to m TORi should only be avoided in patients with diabetes, hypertension and proteinuria.
