Epidemiology of shoulder dislocations presenting to United States emergency departments:An updated ten-year study

BACkGROUND Glenohumeral dislocation is a common injury that may predispose patients to chronic pain and ***,there is a paucity of current data available regarding the epidemiological trends of this *** To provide an updated,comparative assessment of the epidemiology of shoulder dislocations presenting to emergency departments in the United *** also sought to analyze patient demographic risk factors and consumer products associated with dislocation *** Data were obtained from the national electronic injury surveillance system database for glenohumeral dislocations between 2012 and ***,age,sex,and injury characteristics were analyzed using weighted population statistics as well as incidence rates and 95%confidence intervals(CI).RESULTS In total,an estimated 773039 shoulder dislocations(CI:640598-905481)presented to emergency rooms across the United States during the study *** annual incidence rate was 23.96 per 100000 persons and the average patient age at the time of injury was 37.1 *** more male patients sustained dislocations than female patients(537189,69.5%,vs 235834,30.5%,Pk incidence in age group 15-20 years,predominantly secondary to participation in sporting and recreational ***,women experienced a relatively consistent incidence of dislocation throughout their *** age 63,the i

BACkGROUND Epidemiological understanding of acute sternoclavicular(SC)dislocations secondary to sports across the United States is poorly *** To identify and assess epidemiological trends of SC dislocations occurring secondary to sports-related mechanisms across United States over the past two *** This cross-sectional,descriptive epidemiological study evaluates epidemiological trends of SC dislocations from sports that present to emergency departments(EDs)across the United *** were obtained from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database spanning two *** on incidence,patient demographics,mechanisms of injury,dislocation types,incident locales,and patient dispositions were *** 1622 SC dislocations occurred nationwide from 2001 to 2020[incidence=0.262/1000000 people,confidence interval(CI)=0.250-0.275],comprising 0.1%of shoulder/upper trunk *** patients were male(91%,n=1480)and aged 5-17(61%,n=982).Football,wrestling,and biking were the most frequently implicated sports,with contact sports responsible for 59%of athletic injuries(n=961).Recreational vehicle-related sports injuries,such as all-terrain vehicles,dirt bikes,and mopeds accounted for 7.8%of all injuries(n=126),with dirt bikes specifically comprising 3.7%(n=61).Ultimately,82%were discharged from the ED(n=1337),12%were admitted(n=194),and 6%were transferred(n=90).All recorded posterior dislocations were admitted or transferred from the *** sustaining SC dislocations from contact sports had a significantly increased risk of hospital admission or transfer rather than discharge from the ED as compared to patients whose injuries were from non-contact sports(incidence rate ratio=1.46,CI:=1.32-1.61,Pkely comprising a smaller proportion of shoulder dislocations than previously *** sports are a fr

Alpine Taxa Exhibit Differing Responses to Climate Warming in the Snowy Mountains of Australia

The phenologies of plants and animals in snow-covered landscapes are expected to accelerate with global ***,there are few studies that have examined a range of unrelated taxa in alpine environments to determine whether there is commonality in the proximate causes,synchrony in timing,or the direction of any *** for five alpine animal species and two alpine plant species,chosen primarily for their visibility,were examined to determine their temporal response to regional climate *** the 30-year period studied,they showed an array of different phenological *** flowering appeared linked to date of snow melt,whereas animal responses *** having accelerated phenologies,two migratory bird species exhibited contrary changes;one to low-altitude warming regardless of snow conditions in the alpine zone (flame robin) and the other to state of the snowpack regardless of low-altitude temperatures (Richard's pipit).By contrast,the migratory bogong moth arrived significantly later over the years with no apparent explanatory climatic *** bogong moths are not responding to earlier snow melt,insectivorous predators on the ground *** could lead to a serious mismatch in timing at different trophic levels,putting pressure on endangered *** of locally wintering insect species,March flies and Macleay's swallowtails,were not significantly related to measured climatic parameters over the study period.A consequence of the disparate responses to climate warming recorded here is the questionable value of 'indicator species' to examine the impact of climate warming on alpine ecosystems.

Interannual and Seasonal Changes in the Ice Cover of Glacial Lakes in the Snowy Mountains of Australia

Seasonal ice cover is uncommon on Australian lakes. In the Snowy Mountains, there are five natural, seasonally ice-covered lakes including Lake Cootapatamba, the highest lake in Australia. Blue Lake is the only one of the five lakes with sufficient volume to be relatively independent of short-term changes in ambient temperature, and therefore is the lake most likely to be of use in tracking long-term regional climate change. Ice forms on Blue Lake near the winter solstice and ice-breakup occurs from late September to November. Timing of breakup is related to spring temperature and, as such, mirrors the timing of general snow thaw in the mountains. The existence of historic photographs taken of the lake at about the time of ice breakup allows for the possibility of reconstructing a history of alpine climate and in 1905 ice breakup was probably as late as mid-December.

Data Science as Political Action:Grounding Data Science in a Politics of Justice

In response to public scrutiny of data-driven algorithms,the field of data science has adopted ethics training and *** ethics can help data scientists reflect on certain normative aspects of their work,such efforts are ill-equipped to generate a data science that avoids social harms and promotes social *** this article,I argue that data science must embrace a political *** scientists must recognize themselves as political actors engaged in normative constructions of society and evaluate their work according to its downstream impacts on people’s lives.I first articulate why data scientists must recognize themselves as political *** this section,I respond to three arguments that data scientists commonly invoke when challenged to take political positions regarding their *** confronting these arguments,I describe why attempting to remain apolitical is itself a political stance-a fundamentally conservative one-and why data science’s attempts to promote“social good”dangerously rely on unarticulated and incrementalist political assumptions.I then propose a framework for how data science can evolve toward a deliberative and rigorous politics of social justice.I conceptualize the process of developing a politically engaged data science as a sequence of four *** these new approaches will empower data scientists with new methods for thoughtfully and rigorously contributing to social justice.

The Contestation of Tech Ethics: A Sociotechnical Approach to Technology Ethics in Practice

This article introduces the special issue“Technology Ethics in Action:Critical and Interdisciplinary Perspectives”.In response to recent controversies about the harms of digital technology,discourses and practices of“tech ethics”have proliferated across the tech industry,academia,civil society,and *** despite the seeming promise of ethics,tech ethics in practice suffers from several significant limitations:tech ethics is vague and toothless,has a myopic focus on individual engineers and technology design,and is subsumed into corporate logics and *** limitations suggest that tech ethics enables corporate“ethics-washing”:embracing the language of ethics to defuse criticism and resist government regulation,without committing to ethical *** these dynamics,I describe tech ethics as a terrain of contestation where the central debate is not whether ethics is desirable,but what“ethics”entails and who gets to define *** approaches to tech ethics are poised to enable technologists and technology companies to label themselves as“ethical”without substantively altering their ***,those striving for structural improvements in digital technologies must be mindful of the gap between ethics as a mode of normative inquiry and ethics as a practical *** order to better evaluate the opportunities and limits of tech ethics,I propose a sociotechnical approach that analyzes tech ethics in light of who defines it and what impacts it generates in practice.

Sustainability Issues Related to the Engineering Geology of Long Linear Developments

The development of long linear structures such as roads, rail roads, tunnels, canals and pipelines often has unique engineering geology challenges. These include geological modeling, the identification of material strength and support factors, stability and risk issues, material excavation characteristics and the proposal of techniques for overcoming geotechnical problems, which are normally assessed as part of the conventional engineering geological investigation. An additional factor that is becoming increasingly important but is seldom included in investigations is the sustainability of the geotechnical inputs, in contrast to the sustainability of the project which is generally included. Sustainability issues revolve around the non-renewable nature of most construction resources and there is no doubt that the injudicious use of these construction materials and construction water is not sustainable in the long term: it is thus essential that the engineering geo-logical investigation should take cognizance of such issues and be adapted to provide the design engineer with the information that will maximize the sustainability options. This will also require a closer on-going relation-ship between the engineering geologist and the design engineer. This paper highlights significant sustainability issues (note that these differ from conventional environmental issues) and suggests some mitigating solutions. The sustainability issues discussed include primarily material and water usage, with some reference to energy conservation (mostly through alternative material usage and processing techniques and transportation).
