Chronic fatigue syndrome with history of severe infection combined altered blood oxidant status, and reduced potassium efflux and muscle excitability at exercise

It is documented that chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) combines enhanced oxidative stress with altered muscle excitability. We hypothesized that these disorders may be accentuated when severe infection preceded the CFS symptoms. This case-control study compared 55 CFS patients to a matched control group of 40 healthy subjects. In twenty-five CFS patients, severe infection was reported within the three to seven?month period preceding the CFS symptoms. The others had practiced sport at high level. Plasma concentrations of potassium, a marker of lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS), and an endogenous antioxidant (reduced ascorbic acid, RAA) were measured. Action potential (M-wave) was evoked in the vastus lateralis muscle to explore the muscle membrane excitability. All subjects performed a maximal incremental cycling exercise. Compared to control subjects, all CFS patients presented an elevated resting TBARS level and, during and after exercise, an altered M-wave configuration. History of infection was associated with marked significant increase in resting TBARS level, enhanced M-wave alterations, and also reduced exercise-induced potassium efflux. The magnitude of exercise-induced M-wave alterations was proportional to the baseline TBARS level. Severe infection preceding CFS seems to constitute a stressor inducing altered blood oxidant status and a reduced muscle excitability at work.

Lagoons of West African countries are seriously threatened by rapid artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) that exposes lagoons to mercury pollution. In this study, the mercury level in the sediments of the Tendo and Aby lagoons in Côte d’Ivoire had been evaluated. A total of 87 samples from 25 stations located on Tendo and Aby lagoons were analyzed by atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The mean Hg concentrations obtained in the sediments of Tendo and Aby lagoons were 0.89 ± 0.26 mg⋅kg-1 and 0.70 ± 0.18 mg⋅kg-1, respectively. Hg concentrations evaluated in the bays of Tendo and Aby during the dry season were 1.38 ± 0.45 mg⋅kg-1 and 1.07 ± 0.31 mg⋅kg-1, respectively. The minimum and maximum total Hg concentrations in the sediments from 25 stations were 0.04 and 3.56 mg⋅kg-1, respectively. Mercury contamination in lagoons during ASGM poses risks of pollution for the lagoon ecosystem and also poses health risks for the population living near these lagoons.

Hyponatremia during a Severe Pneumococcal Meningitis with Renal Salt Wasting: A Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome?

Background: The existence and prevalence of cerebral salt wasting and its differentiation from syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone have been controversial. This controversy stems from overlapping clinical and laboratory findings and an inability to assess the volume status of these patients. Objectives:To present a case of a cerebral salt wasting syndrome secondary to a bacterial mengitis and to emphasize the difficulty to assess the diagnosis. Case report: A 51-year-old male admitted to the ICU for a severe bacterial meningitis who developed, four days later, hyponatremia associated with hypovolemia due to a renal salt wasting. Clinical and biological parameters were collected;electrolytes balances and salt clearances were calculated to best investigate this hydroelectrolytic disorder. Patient's volume status and improvement after fluid and sodium replacement highly suggests the diagnosis of a cerebral salt wasting syndrome. Conclusion: A thorough analysis of this case showed that occurrence of hyponatremia and renal salt wasting after brain agression is not univocal underlying the fact that the diagnosis of cerebral salt wasting should be assessed only after a careful examination of the different determinants of the hydroelectrolytical balance.

Broiler breeder vaccination against IBD is usually based on the injection of at least one inactivated vaccine in oil adjuvant, typically included in a combined vaccine. Priming using one or several IBD vaccine (s) has been the most common way to immunize the breeders so far. In summary, protection against vvIBD challenge in chicks of one commercial genetic line vaccinated in ovo with the HVT-IBD vector vaccine was demonstrated. The parents’ IBD vaccination program, using the HVT-IBD vector vaccine alone, the HVT-IBD vector vaccine plus IBD inactivated vaccine, and inactivated IBD vaccine alone, did not impair their progeny’s in ovo HVT-IBD vector vaccine take and subsequent protection against vvIBD virus challenge. An advantage in terms of immunization of the progeny against vvIBD was shown in the chicks born to breeders vaccinated with the HVT-IBD vaccine as a primer, as compared to breeders vaccinated with the inactivated vaccine alone. High level of IBD maternally-derived antibodies transmitted to the progeny by their parents induces together with an early onset of immunity by in ovo injection of a HVT-IBD vector vaccine clinical protection, as monitored on bursas, after vvIBD virus challenge.

Lake Issyk-Kul is the seventh deepest lake in the world situated inCentral Asiain theTien-ShanMountainsat the elevation of 1607 m above sea level. This area belongs toKyrgyzstan. From 1927 to 1997 the water level decreased by 3.4 m, and increased by 0.93 m from 1997 to 2011. The article analyzes the impact of the global warming on the Lake Issyk-Kul thermal regime and the components of its water balance: river discharge, precipitation, evaporation and lake level variations. It shows that the global warming has entailed the increase of the Lake Issyk-Kul water temperature down to the maximum depths, and river discharge increase due to the glaciers melting and the evaporation from the lake surface. The air temperature increase of 1 ℃ results in river discharge increas and lake level rise of 44 mm/year and surface evaporation increase of 88 mm/year. TheLakeIssyk-Kullevel increase after 1997, which takes place in the situation of global warming, was caused by the activation of the West air masses transport and increase of precipitation in autumn.

Testing Some f(R,T) Gravity Models from Energy Conditions

We consider f(R,T) theory of gravity, where R is the curvature scalar and T is the trace of the energy momentum tensor. Attention is attached to the special case, f(R,T)=R+2f(T) and two expressions are assumed for the function f(T),(a1Tn+b1)/(a2Tn+b2) and a3Inq(b3Tm), where a1,a2 ,b1,b2,n,a3 ,b3,q and m are input parameters. We observe that by adjusting suitably these input parameters, energy conditions can be satisfied. Moreover, an analysis of the perturbations and stabilities of de Sitter solutions and power-law solutions is performed with the use of the two models. The results show that for some values of the input parameters, for which energy conditions are satisfied, de Sitter solutions and power-law solutions may be stables.
