Connexin subunits are proteins that form gap junction channels, and play an important role in communication between adjacent cells. This review article discusses the function of connexins/hemichannels/gap junctions under physiological conditions, and summarizes the findings re-garding the role of connexins/hemichannels/gap junctions in the physiological and pathological mechanisms underlying central nervous system diseases such as brain ischemia, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, epilepsy, brain and spinal cord tumor, migraine, neuroautoimmune disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Peli-zaeus-Merzbacher-like disease, spastic paraplegia and maxillofacial dysplasia. Connexins are considered to be a potential novel target for protecting the central nervous system.

Slope spectrum variation in a simulated loess watershed

A simulated loess watershed, where the loess material and relief properly represent the true loess surface, is adopted to investigate the variation in slope spectrum with loess watershed evolution. The evolution of the simulated loess watershed was driven by the exogenetic force of artificial rainfall. For a period of three months, twenty artificial rainfall events with different intensities and durations were carried out. In the process, nine DEM data sets, each with 10mm grid resolution, were established by the method of close-range photogrammetry. The slope spectra were then extracted from these DEMs. Subsequent series of carefully designed quantitative analyses indicated a strong relationship between the slope spectrum and the evolution of the simulated loess watershed. Quantitative indices of the slope spectrum varied regularly following the evolution of the simulated loess watershed. Mean slope, slope spectrum information entropy （H）, terrain driving force （Td）, Mean patch area （AREA_MN）, Contagion Index （CONTAG）, and Patch Cohesion Index （COHESION） kept increasing following the evolution of the simulated watershed, while skewness （S）, Perimeter-Area Fractal Dimension （PAFRAC）, and Interspersion and Juxtaposition Index （IJl） represented an opposite trend. All the indices changed actively in the early and active development periods, but slowly in the stable development periods. These experimental results indicate that the time series of slope spectra was able to effectively depict the slope distribution of the simulated loess watershed, thus presenting a potential method for model- ing loess landforms.

The suspension characteristics of ultrafine powder slurry in the stirred vessel were simulated by using computational fluid *** results show that the Rushton disk turbine impeller is more conducive to maintaining suspended homogeneity and circulation of slurry compared with the pitch blade turbine pumping up impeller and the pitch blade turbine pumping down *** the increase in stirring speed enhances turbulent fluctuation and anisotropic velocity of the fluid at the cost of more power consumption,which improves dispersibility and suspensibility of the ***,the change of impeller clearance has a weak influence on the flow pattern,and the impeller clearance of 0.32T(T is the diameter of the bottom of the reactor)can achieve better dispersivity and suspensibility of the particles with lower power consumption and larger axial *** experiments of surface coating modification of ultrafine titanium dioxide(TiO2)were carried out under the same conditions for those of the simulation *** surface film morphology and photocatalytic properties of the modified TiO2 were analyzed,and the obtained data are well consistent with the simulation results.

Objective To investigate the indigenous lactobacilli from the vagina of pregnant women and to screen the isolates with antagonistic potential against pathogenic microorganisms. Methods The strains were isolated from pregnant women＇s vagina and identified using the API50CH system. The ability of the isolates to produce hydrogen peroxide was analyzed semi-quantitatively using the TMB-HRP-MRS agar. The antagonistic effects of the isolates on pathogenic microorganisms were determined with a double layer agar plate. Results One hundred and three lactobacilli strains were isolated from 60 samples of vaginal secretion from healthy pregnant women. Among them, 78 strains could produce hydrogen peroxide, in which 68%, 80%, 80%, and 88% had antagonistic effects against Candida albicans CMCC98001, Staphylococcus aureus CMCC26003, Escherichia coli CMCC44113, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa CMCC10110, respectively. Conclusion The recovery of hydrogen peroxide-producing lactobacilli decreases with the increasing pregnant age and time. The most commonly isolated species from vagina of Chinese pregnant women are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus crispatus. Most of L. acidophilus and L. crispatus produce a high H2O2 level.

Plants have evolved sophisticated genetic networks to regulate iron （Fe） homeostasis for their survival. Several classes of plant hormones including jasmonic acid （JA） have been shown to be involved in regulating the expression of iron uptake and/or deficiency-responsive genes in plants. However, the molecular mechanisms by which JA regulates iron uptake remain unclear. In this study, we found that JA negatively modulates iron uptake by downregulating the expression of FIT （bHLH29）, bHLH38, bHLH39, bHLHIO0, and bHLHI01 and promoting the degradation of FIT protein, a key regulator of iron uptake in Arabidopsis. We further demonstrated that the subgroup IVa bHLH proteins, bHLH18, bHLH19, bHLH20, and bHLH25, are novel interactors of FIT, which promote JA-induced FIT protein degradation. These four IVa bHLHs function redundantly to antagonize the activity of the Ib bHLHs （such as bHLH38） in regulating FIT protein stability under iron deficiency. The four IVa bHLH genes are primarily expressed in roots, and are inducible by JA treatment. Moreover, we found that MYC2 and JAR1, two critical components of the JA signaling pathway, play critical roles in mediating JA suppression of the expression of FIT and Ib bHLH genes, whereas they differentially modulate the expression of bHLH18, bHLH19, bHLH20, and bHLH25 to regulate FIT accumulation under iron deficiency. Taken together, these results indicate that by transcriptionally regulating the expression of different sets of bHLH genes JA signaling promotes FIT degradation, resulting in reduced expression of iron-uptake genes, IRT1 and FRO2, and increased sensitivity to iron deficiency. Our data suggest that there is a multilayered inhibition of iron-deficiency response in the presence JA in Arabidopsis.

BACKGROUND:Opportunistic infection of Candida albicans(***) has become a serious problem in immunocompromised *** study aimed to explore the mechanism of enterogenous infection of *** in immunocompromised rats under severe acute pancreatitis(SAP).METHODS:Sprague Dawley(SD) rats(n=100) were randomly assigned into 5 groups as the following:blank group,cyclophosphamide+ceftriaxone+SAP group,cyclophosphamide+ceftriaxone group,cyclophosphamide+SAP group,and cyclophosphamide *** rats were sacrificed at 5and 10 days,and their jejunum,colon,mesenteric lymph nodes,pancreas,intestinal content,and blood were quickly collected to detect ***.A region of the 25 S rRNA gene was chosen and amplified by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) to differentiate *** *** amplified products were further sequenced and compared to judge their ***:Compared with the Cyclophosphamide group,the combination of immunosuppressants and broad-spectrum antibiotics significantly increased the colonization of *** in intestine in 5 and 10 *** SAP stress did not increase the opportunistic infection of *** PCR products of *** isolates all belonged to the genotype A family,and sequence alignment showed that the amplified fragments were ***:The damage of immune system and broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents are important risk factors for opportunistic fungal *** tract is an important source for genotype-A *** to translocate and invade into bloodstream.

Human embryonic stem (ES) cells are capable of unlimited proliferation and maintenance of pluripo-tency in vitro;these properties may lead to potential applications in regenerative medicine. However,immune rejection hampers the allogenic application of human ES cells. Over-expression of several specific transcription factors has been used to reprogram human adult cells into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells,which are similar to hESCs in many aspects. The iPS technique makes it possible to produce patient-specific pluripotent stem cells for transplantation therapy without immune rejection. However,some challenges remain,including viral vector integration into the genome,the existence of exogenous oncogenic factors,and low induction efficiency. Here,we review recent advances in human iPS methodology,as well as remaining challenges and its potential applications.
