The exfoliation of bulk graphitic carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))into monolayer has been intensively studied to induce maximum sur-face area for fundamental studies,but ended in failure to realize chemi-cally and physically well-defined monolayer of g-C_(3)N_(4)mostly due to the difficulty in reducing the layer thickness down to an atomic *** has,therefore,remained as a challenging issue in two-dimensional(2D)chemistry and physics *** this study,an“atomic monolayer of g-C_(3)N_(4)with perfect two-dimensional limit”was successfully prepared by the chemically well-defined two-step *** atomically resolved monolayer of g-C_(3)N_(4)was also confirmed by spectroscopic and micro-scopic *** addition,the experimental Cs-HRTEM image was collected,for the first time,which was in excellent agreement with the theoretically simulated;the evidence of monolayer of g-C_(3)N_(4)in the perfect 2D limit becomes now clear from the HRTEM image of orderly hexagonal symmetry with a cavity formed by encirclement of three adjacent heptazine *** to bulk g-C_(3)N_(4),the present g-C_(3)N_(4)monolayer showed significantly higher photocatalytic gen-eration of H2O2 and H2,and electrocatalytic oxygen reduction *** addition,its photocatalytic efficiency for H2O2 production was found to be the best for any known g-C_(3)N_(4)nanomaterials,underscoring the remarkable advantage of monolayer formation in optimizing the catalyst performance of g-C_(3)N_(4).

Tidal Forecast for Final Closure of Saemangeum Tidal Dike

The Saemangeum project includes well-developed tidal flats, two estuaries of the Mankyeong and Dongjin rivers, and a chain of small iskands in the outer area off the dike by reclaiming a surface area of 40100 ha. A long sea dike of 30 km has been constructed in the mid-west area of Korea. This paper describes the construction of tidal dikes focusing on the final closure operation performed in April, 2006 employing intermediate technology. Predictive modelling was also carried out to predict the real-time flow fields during the gradual closure operation of the final stage.

Repeat hepatic resection in patients with colorectal liver metastases

AIM:To investigate the survival outcomes of secondaryhepatectomy for recurrent colorectal liver metastases(CRLM).METhoDS:From October 1994 to December 2009,patients with CRLM who underwent surgical treatment with curative intent were *** were divided into two groups:patients who underwent primary hepatectomy(Group 1)and those who underwent secondary hepatectomy for recurrent CRLM(Group 2).RESULTS:Survival and prognostic factors were analyzed.A total of 461 patients were included:406patients in Group 1 and 55 patients in Group *** a median 39-mo(range,3-195 mo)follow-up,there was a significant difference between Groups 1 and 2in terms of disease-free survival(P=0.029)although there was no significant difference in overall survival(P=0.206).Secondary hepatectomy was less effective in patients with multiple recurrent CRLM than primary hepatectomy for initial CRLM(P=0.008).Multiple CRLM and radiofrequency ablation therapy were poor prognostic factors of secondary hepatectomy in multivariate Cox regression analysis(P=0.006,P=0.004,respectively).CONCLUSION:Secondary hepatectomy for single recurrent CRLM is as effective as primary surgical treatment for single recurrent ***,secondary hepatectomy for multiple recurrent CRLM is less effective than that for single recurrent CRLM.

Preliminary Results of the Ground-Based Orographic Snow Enhancement Experiment for the Easterly Cold Fog (Cloud) at Daegwallyeong during the 2006 Winter

The snow enhancement experiments, carried out by injecting AgI and water vapor into orographically enhanced clouds （fog）, have been conducted to confirm Li and Pitter＇s forced condensation process in a natural situation. Nine ground-based experiments have been conducted at Daegwallyeong in the Taebaek Mountains for the easterly foggy days from January-February 2006. We then obtained the optimized conditions for the Daegwallyeong region as follows： the small seeding rate （1.04 g min-1） of AgI for the easterly cold fog with the high humidity of Gangneung. Additional experiments are needed to statistically estimate the snowfall increment caused by the small AgI seeding into the orographical fog （cloud） over the Taeback Mountains.

Size Segregation and Super-Domain Mediated by Dipolar Interactions in 3-D Iron Nanoparticle Assemblies

We report the phenomenon of size segregation and the experimental evidence for the presence of correlated areas mediated by dipolar interactions in three-dimensional Fe nanoparticle *** nanoparticles dispersed in ethanol assemble into tabular whiskers (8 μm × 40 μm in cross section with lengths up to 1 0 cm) due to dipolar *** force microscopy observations on iron nanoparticle compact assemblies prove the local magnetic correlation of the Fe nanoparticles due to dipolar coupling and the formation of domain-like structures in expanded *** measurements show that the coercivity and the low field magnetic susceptibility of the Fe nanoparticle assemblies increase while the saturation magnetization decreases with the increasing interparticle distance.

Finger compartment syndrome due to a high-pressure washer injury:A case report

BACKGROUND Although the finger compartment syndrome is not common,it compresses the neurovascular bundles in a limited space and blocks blood flow to the fingers,causing necrosis of the *** fasciotomy through unilateral or bilateral midline release of the finger can achieve decompression of the finger ***,we report a case of the compartment syndrome in a finger injury caused by a high-pressure water flow which is commonly used in car washing *** SUMMARY A 60-year-old man injured his right middle finger while using a high-pressure washer at a car washing *** patient complained of severe pain in his middle finger and a 0.2 cm punctured open wound on the volar side of the distal phalangeal joint of the middle *** fingertip was pale,numb,and characterized by severe swelling and a limited range of *** radiography showed that there was no fracture in the *** decompression was performed through finger fasciotomy by bilateral midline *** the second day after surgery,the color of the fingertip returned to pink,swelling was resolved,and the range of motion returned to *** sensation of the fingertip was completely restored,and the capillary refill test and pinprick test were *** The fingertip compartment syndrome can be caused by a high-pressure water flow damage to the fingers when using high-pressure washers at a car washing *** avoid finger necrosis,rapid diagnosis of the finger compartment syndrome and appropriate digital decompression are essential to better outcome.

Milan criteria are useful predictors for favorable outcomes in hepatocellular carcinoma patients undergoing liver transplantation after transarterial chemoembolization

AIM: To evaluate whether the Milan criteria are useful in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who received transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) before liver transplantation (LT). METhoDS: Thirty-six HCC patients who fulfilled the Milan criteria after having received TACE and subsequently underwent LT were included (TACE + LT group) in the study. As controls, 21 patients who also met the Milan criteria and underwent LT without prior treatment were selected (LT group). Post-LT clinical outcomes, such as HCC recurrence, survival rate, and histologic features of explanted livers, were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics were not different between the two groups. Pre-LT maximal tumor diameter in TACE + LT group was similar to that of LT group (2.0 ± 0.6 cm vs 2.3 ± 0.9 cm; P = 0.10). Post-LT histologic findings also revealed similar maximal tumor diameter in the two groups (2.4 ± 1.4 cm vs 2.3 ± 0.9 cm; P = 0.70). Explanted livers showed similar incidence of unfavorable pathologic features. The morality within 60 d after transplantation was not different between the two groups (8.3% vs 9.5%; P = 0.99). Post-LT 5-year survival rate (57% vs 74%; P = 0.70) and cumulative recurrence rate (8.3% vs 4.8%; P = 0.90) were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The Milan criteria are still a useful selec- tion criteria showing favorable outcomes in HCC patientsreceiving TACE before LT.

A dose-dependent bimodal switch by homologous Aux/IAA transcriptional repressors

Combinatorial interactions between different regulators diversify and enrich the chance of transcriptional regulation in eukaryotic ***,a dose-dependent functional switch of homologous transcriptional repressors has rarely been ***,we show that SHY2,an auxin/indole-3-acetic acid(Aux/IAA)repressor,exhibits a dose-dependent bimodal role in auxin-sensitive root-hair growth and gene transcrip-tion in Arabidopsis,whereas other Aux/lAA homologs consistently repress the auxin *** co-repressor(TOPLESS[TPL])-binding affinity of a bimodal Aux/IAA was lower than that of a consistently re-pressing Aux/*** switch of a single amino acid residue in the TPL-binding motif between the bimodal form and the consistently repressing form switched their TPL-binding affinity and transcriptional and bio-logical roles in auxin *** on these data,we propose a model whereby competition between homologous repressors with different co-repressor-binding affinities could generate a bimodal output at thetranscriptional anddevelopmental levels.

Generation of tumor spheroids using a droplet-based microfluidic device for photothermal therapy

Despite their simplicity,monolayer cell cultures are not able to accurately predict drug behavior in vivo due to their inability to accurately mimic cell-cell and cell-matrix *** contrast,cell spheroids are able to reproduce these interactions and thus would be a viable tool for testing drug ***,the generation of homogenous and reproducible cell spheroids on a large scale is a labor intensive and slow process compared to monolayer cell ***,we present a droplet-based microfluidic device for the automated,large-scale generation of homogenous cell spheroids in a uniform *** the microfluidic system,the size of the spheroids can be tuned to between 100 and 130μm with generation frequencies of 70 *** demonstrated the photothermal therapy(PTT)application of brain tumor spheroids generated by the microfluidic device using a reduced graphene oxide-branched polyethyleneimine-polyethylene glycol(rGO-BPEI-PEG)nanocomposite as the PTT ***,we generated uniformly sized neural stem cell(NSC)-derived neurospheres in the droplet-based microfluidic *** also confirmed that the neurites were regulated by ***,this droplet-based microfluidic device could be a powerful tool for photothermal therapy and drug screening applications.
