Between 1853 and 1858, the militia and hired braves of Luhe county, Jiangsu, distinguished themselves by successfully defending against Taiping attack when surrounding counties and cities all fell. The historian Xu Zi （1810-62） served as a militia leader, commanding a company of troops and working to raise funds to pay for provisions. At the same time, he was writing his history of the Southern Ming Courts： Annals of a Fallen State, With Appended Annotations （Xiaotian jinian fukao）. In his history, Xu Zi included anecdotes of his wartime experiences, writing the Taiping War into the history of the Southern Ming. What does history do？ Xu Zi hoped it could help establish and maintain the coherence of the forces fighting the Taiping. To that end, he presented exemplary figures from the past for people of his own time to emulate, and he narrated those stories to his fellow soldiers. At the same time, his work suggests that the practices of the historian--including investigation of sources, expressions of emotion, and evaluation of policy--could provide avenues for defeating the Taiping. By writing himself into his history of the Southern Ming, he showed how the past could become a tool of war.

Molecular evolution of the rice miR395 gene family

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are 20-22 nucleotide non-coding RNAs that play important roles in plant and animal development. They are usually processed from larger precursors that can form stem-loop structures. Among 20 miRNA families that are conserved between Arabidopsis and rice, the rice miR395 gene family was unique because it was organized into compact clusters that could be transcribed as one single transcript. We show here that in fact this family had four clusters of total 24 genes. Three of these clusters were segmental duplications. They contained miR395 genes of both 120 bp and 66 bp long. However, only the latter was repeatedly duplicated. The fourth cluster contained miR395 genes of two different sizes that could be the consequences of intergenic recombination of genes from the first three clusters. On each cluster, both 1-duplication and 2-duplication histories were observed based on the sequence similarity between miR395 genes, some of which were nearly identical suggesting a recent origin. This was supported by a miR395 locus survey among several species of the genus Oryza, where two clusters were only found in species with an AA genome, the genome of the cultivated rice. A comparative study of the genomic organization of Medicago truncatula miR395 gene family showed significant expansion of intergenic spaces indicating that the originally clustered genes were drifting away from each other. The diverse genomic organizations of a conserved microRNA gene family in different plant genomes indicated that this important negative gene regulation system has undergone dramatic tune-ups in plant genomes.

Integrating mobility and security in the network layer has become a key factor for Future Internet Architecture(FIA). This paper proposes a secure mobility support mechanism in e Xpressive Internet Architecture(XIA),a new FIA currently under development as part of the US National Science Foundation's(NSF) program. Utilizing the natural features of ID/locator decoupling and versatile routing in XIA, a general mechanism to support host mobility is proposed. Exploiting the self-certifying identifier, a secure binding update protocol to overcome the potential threats introduced by the proposed mobility support mechanism is also given. We demonstrate that our design in XIA outperforms IP based solutions in terms of efficiency and flexibility. We also outline our initial design to illustrate one derivative benefit of an evolvable architecture:mobility support customizability with no sacrifice of architectural generality.

Previous studies on haze formation focused mainly on the various chemical components in aerosol particles and their physicochemical effects on particle behaviour(e.g.,generation,growth,and agglomeration).This paper describes the measurement of the charging state on atmospheric aerosol particles,which could be affected by meteorological conditions.A series of experiments on particle charging state and meteorological factors was undertaken on the roof of the west 4th building on the Qujiang Campus at Xi'an Jiaotong University(China).Measurements were conducted approximately 20 m above ground level,Our results showed that most atmospheric particles carried net negative or positive charge and that the electric charge on the particles varied diurnally and *** average amount of charge on particles was higher in winter than in *** number concentration of charged particles was higher during the day than *** difference in the average charge of aerosol particles was found between sand-dust days and haze days.A strong relationship was found between the PM2.s concentration,charge amount on particles,and *** findings show that particle formation and growth could partly be attributed to variation in particle charging state,which is related to meteorological conditions including atmospheric humidity.

Polyethylene （PE） pipe, particularly high- density polyethylene （HDPE） pipe, has been successfully utilized to transport cooling water for both non-safety- and safety-related applications in nuclear power plant （NPP）. Though ASME Code Case N755, which is the first code case related to NPP HDPE pipe, requires a thorough nondestructive examination （NDE） of HDPE joints. However, no executable regulations presently exist because of the lack of a feasible NDE technique for HDPE pipe in NPP. This work presents a review of current developments in NDE technology for both HDPE pipe in NPP with a diameter of less than 400 mm and that of a larger size. For the former category, phased array ultrasonic technique is proven effective for inspecting typical defects in HDPE pipe, and is thus used in Chinese national standards GB/T 29460 and GB/T 29461. A defect- recognition technique is developed based on pattern recognition, and a safety assessment principle is summa- rized from the database of destructive testing. On the other hand, recent research and practical studies reveal that in current ultrasonic-inspection technology, the absence of effective ultrasonic inspection for large size was lack of consideration of the viscoelasticity effect of PE on acoustic wave propagation in current ultrasonic inspection technology. Furthermore, main technical problems were analyzed in the paper to achieve an effective ultrasonic test method in accordance to the safety and efficiency requirements of related regulations and standards. Finally, the development trend and challenges of NDE test technology for HDPE in NPP are discussed.
