Effect of bombesin and neurotensin on gut barrier function in partially hepatectomized rats

AIM： To investigate the effect of regulatory peptides bombesin （BBS） and neurotensin （NT） on intestinal barrier function in partially hepatectomized rats. METHOdS： Ninety male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups： Ⅰ （n = 10）： controls, Ⅱ （n = 20）： sham operated, Ⅲ （n = 20）： partial hepatectomy 70% （PHx）, Ⅳ （n = 20）： PHx＋BBS （30 μg/kg/d）, Ⅴ （n = 20）： PHx＋NT （300 μg/kg/d）. Groups IV and V were treated for 8 days before PHx and 48 h post surgery. At the end of the experiment, on day 10, intestinal barrier function was assessed by measuring endotoxin concentrations in portal and aortic blood. Tissue sections of the terminal ileum were examined histologically and villus density, mucosal thickness, mitotic activity and apoptosis in crypts were assessed. In addition, ileal mucosa was analyzed for dNA and protein content and microbiological analysis was performed in cecal contents. To estimate intestinal oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation was determined on tissue homogenates from terminal ileum. RESULTS： BBS or NT administration significantly reduced portal and systemic endotoxemia observed 48 h after partial hepatectomy. In hepatectomized rats （group Ⅲ）, a trend towards induction of mucosal atrophy was observed, demonstrated by the reduction of villus density, mucosal thickness, protein content and significant reduction of dNA, while these alterations were reversed by regulatory peptides administration. This trophic effect of BBS and NT was accompanied by induction of mitoses above control levels and a significant reduction of apoptosis in intestinal crypts. Intestinal lipid peroxidation was found significantly lower in PHx group and regulatory peptides exerted an antioxidant action, further decreasing this parameter of oxidative stress. Background:Sapindus mukurossi extract(SME)is a kind of natural surface active ingredient with potential applications in cleansing ***,the polyphenols and pigments contained in the extract may cause color browning of the products during storage especially at elevated temperatures,affecting its high level addition in the ***:To explore a decolorization process suitable for industrialization realize the high level addition of SME and explore the potential of SME in the field of controlling sebum *** and Methods:SME was prepared by adsorbing polyphenols on the d301 resin and oxidation decoloring *** its sebum-control efficacy by SZ95 model and clinical ***:The results demonstrate that the d301 resin displays the best adsorption selectivity for polyphenols in SME,and the polyphenol adsorption ratio of d301 resin(5 wt%)can reach 83.6%;The optimal decolorization conditions are pH=7.8,temperature 73℃and decolorization time 5.7 h when H2O2 content is 6%,The prepared SME shows no obvious changes in color and retain stable during the high temperature(50°C)test period of 28 days.4μg/mL of SME decreases the lipid synthesis of SZ95 cells by 24.8%.The clinic efficacy of the shampoo containing 10%SME(by dry extract weigh)is further *** significant changes in the skin moisture content and transepidermal water loss(TEWL)are observed within four weeks after using the product,while the scalp sebum level is significantly ***:In this study,we prepared a light-colored,highly stable SME,enabled its high-level addition in cleansing and care products and found its sebum-control efficacy.

Wireless capsule endoscopy in the investigation of patients with chronic renal failure and obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (preliminary data)

AIM： To investigate the role of wireless capsule endoscopy （WCE） in detection of small bowel （SB） pathology in patients with chronic renal failure （CRF） and obscure bleeding. METHOdS： Consecutive CRF patients with obscure bleeding were prospectively studied. Patients with normal renal function and obscure bleeding, investigated during the same period with WCE, were used for the interpretation of results. RESULTS： Seventeen CRF patients （11 overt, 6 occult bleeding） and 51 patients （33 overt, 18 occult bleeding） with normal renal function were enrolled in this study. Positive SB findings were detected in 70.6% of CRF patients and in 41.2% of non-CRF patients （P〈0.05）. SB angiodysplasia was identified in 47% of CRF patients and in 17.6% of non-CRF patients. Univariate logistic regression revealed CRF as a significant predictive factor for angiodysplasia （P〈0.05）. Therapeutic measures were undertaken in 66% of the patients with the positive findings. CONCLUSION： According to our preliminary results, SB angiodysplasia was found in an increased prevalence among CRF patients with obscure bleeding. WCE is useful in diagnosis of gastrointestinal pathologies and in planning appropriate therapeutic intervention and, therefore, should be included in the work-up of this group of patients.

The computerized LASSI-BC Test versus the Standard LASSI-L Paper-and-Pencil Version in Community-Based-Samples

Proactive Semantic Interference (PSI) and failure to recover from PSI (frPSI), are novel constructs assessed by the LASSI-L. These measures are sensitive to cognitive changes in early Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and preclinical Ad determined by Aβ load using PET. The goal of this study was to compare a new computerized version of the LASSI-L (LASSI-Brief Computerized) to the standard paper-and-pencil version of the test. In this study, we examined 110 cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults and 79 with amnestic MCI (aMCI) who were administered the paper-and-pencil form of the LASSI-L. Their performance was compared with 62 CU older adults and 52 aMCI participants examined using the LASSI-BC. After adjustment for covariates (degree of initial learning, sex, education, and language of evaluation) both the standard and computerized versions distinguished between aMCI and CU participants. The performance of CU and aMCI groups using either form was relatively commensurate. Importantly, an optimal combination of Cued B2 recall and Cued B1 intrusions on the LASSI-BC yielded an area under the ROC curve of .927, a sensitivity of 92.3% and specificity of 88.1%, relative to an area under the ROC curve of .815, a sensitivity of 72.5%, and a specificity of 79.1% obtained for the paper-and-pencil LASSI-L. Overall, the LASSI-BC was comparable, and in some ways, superior to the paper-and-pencil LASSI-L. Advantages of the LASSI-BC include a more standardized administration, suitability for remote assessment, and an automated scoring mechanism that can be verified by a built-in audio recording of responses.

Severe Thyrotoxicosis does Not Accelerate 1a-Hydroxylation of 25-Hydroxyvitamin d3 in dogs. Experimental Study

Two healthy dogs weighing 18 kg and 13 kg each received an intravenous injection of 7 μg/kg 25-hydroxyvitamin d3 (25OHd3). Subsequently, they were blood-sampled in order to determine the plasma levels of 25(OH)d3 over 4-hourly time intervals and for a time period of 24 hours. After a period of 18 days since the last blood sampling, the animals were brought to a hyperthyroid state and the intravenous injection of 7 μg/kg 25OHd3 was repeated. Blood sampling was performed every 4 hours and over a time period of 24 hours in order to determine the levels of 25OHd3. The graphic plotting of plasma levels of 25OHd3 in the euthyroid state did not differ from that in the hyperthyroid state. This finding in dog animal experimentation is indicative that the increased levels of thyroid hormones did not affect the activity of CYP27B1 and CYP24A1 enzymes that are related to the catabolism of 25OHd3 over a minimum of 24 hours period.

Utilization of coal fly ash and municipal sewage sludge in agriculture and for reconstruction of soils in disturbed lands： results of case studies from Greece and China

Coal fly ash （CFA） and municipal sewage sludge （MSS） management is a great concern worldwide. An alternative gaining high interest, is their use in agriculture and for reclamation of degraded lands. The purpose of this paper was to present very briefly the results of some case studies carried out in China and Greece related to land reclamation and agricultural use of CFA and MSS separately or combined. An experiment in Platanoulia area, central Greece showed clearly that CFA applied together with MSS at appropriate rates increased substantially wheat grain and biomass yield and improved soil quality （increased soil pH, organic matter content, total nitrogen, available P and boron）. In a long-term experiment carried out in Huaibei city, Anhui province, China with a reconstructed soil in a subsided land by using CFA, it was found that physicochemical characteristics （infiltration rate, bulk density, total nitrogen, available P and extractable K） tended to be improved over time. In another experiment in Rodia area central Greece, MSS application improved soil quality of limestone mining spoils from bauxite mining activities. Several other experiments with MSS in Greece showed a clear positive effect on cotton and maize yield and on soil quality.
