Near-infrared double-cable conjugated polymers based on alkyl linkers with tunable length for single-component organic solar cells

The photovoltaic properties of double-cable conjugated polymers are significantly influenced by the length of the alkyl linkers that connect donor backbones and acceptor side units. In this study, a series of 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)malononitrile(IC)-based double-cable polymers with alkyl linkers ranging from C_8H_(16)to C_(16)H_(32)(Px, x = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) were synthesized for single-component organic solar cells(SCOSCs). Among these, the linker length x = 12(P12) is found to optimize the power conversion efficiencies(PCEs) in SCOSCs. Specifically, PCEs increase from P8 to P12 and then decline from P12to P16. Detailed investigations of optical absorption, charge transport, and morphology provide insights into the underlying factors contributing to these PCE variations. The findings indicate that the exceptional photovoltaic properties observed in P12 can be attributed to three key factors: A delicate balance between enhanced charge separation facilitated by the increased spacer length and reduced crystallinity resulting from longer spacers, higher charge mobilities, and well-balanced hole/electron transport characteristics. This study highlights the critical role of linker length in determining the photovoltaic properties of double-cable conjugated polymer-based SCOSCs and offers valuable guidance for the design of novel double-cable conjugated polymers.

resonant Tender X‑ray Scattering of Organic Semiconductors

CONSPECTUS: Organic semiconductors are an important class ofmaterial with application in a wide range of devices including organiclight emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors(OFETs), organic solar cells, and organic thermoelectrics. Theperformance of organic semiconductor devices is strongly linked tothin film microstructure. As such, much research in the field is devotedto controlling and characterizing the microstructure of organicsemiconductor thin films. The microstructure of organic semiconductorthin films in general, however, is challenging to characterize,as they have a level of disorder that often hinders the application ofstandard techniques for structural analysis. As organic materials, theyalso weakly interact with electron and X-ray beams, with thin filmsadditionally having a small volume of material to interrogate. Advances in the development of synchrotron beamlines are nowenabling the utilization of so-called “tender” X-rays for studying complex thin film organic samples. Tender X-rays have energymidway between hard X-rays (>10 keV or wavelength less than 0.1 nm) and soft X-rays (r wavelength longer than ∼1.2nm). Importantly, many heteroatoms found in organic semiconductors such as sulfur, chlorine, and silicon have absorption edges inthe tender X-ray regime, enabling resonant tender X-ray scattering experiments. While resonant soft X-ray scattering (r-SoXS) hasbeen an invaluable technique for the field utilizing the resonant interaction between soft X-rays with organic materials for enhancedscattering contrast (targeting the absorption edges of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen), r-SoXS is limited by the long wavelength ofsoft X-rays and the strong absorption of soft X-rays by organic films. The molecular orientations of conjugated materials on the substrate mainly include edge-on,face-on,and ***-on and face-on orientations have been widely observed,while end-on orientation has been rarely *** in organic solar cells(OSCs)charge transport is along the vertical direction,end-on orientation with conjugated backbones perpendicular to the substrate is recognized as the ideal microstructure for *** this work,we for the first time obtained the preferential end-on orientation in a conjugated molecular dyad that contains a conjugated backbone as donor and perylene bisimide side units as *** was realized by introducing a fused-ring structure to replace linear terthiophenes with conjugated backbones,yielding F-MDPBI and L-MDPBI ***,a shifting trend of the molecular orientation from dominating edge-on in L-MDPBI to preferential end-on in F-MDPBI was *** a consequence,vertical charge carrier mobilities in F-MDPBI are one order of magnitude higher than those with preferential edge-on orientation,so single-component OSCs based on this molecular dyad as a single photoactive layer provided a power conversion efficiency of 4.89% compared to 1.70% based on L-MDPBI with preferential edge-on orientation.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders and anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein positive optic neuropathies

AIM: To describe the clinical characteristics and treatments associated with antibody positive optic neuropathies including anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein(MOG) and anti-aquaporin 4(AQP4), alongside diagnostic modalities, investigations, and outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional single-centre retrospective case series consisting of 16 patients including 12 antiMOG positive patients and 4 anti-AQP4 positive patients. Each of these patients had clinical signs and symptoms of optic neuritis and consisted of all patients who had a positive blood antibody result in our centre. Clinical findings including presence of a relative afferent pupillary defect, colour vision and disc assessment were recorded. Structured clinical exam and multimodal imaging was undertaken sequentially on each. Optical coherence tomography(OCT) scanning was preformed to examine the correlation between ganglion cell layer(GCL) thickness and visual acuity(VA) at presentation and as a determinant of final visual outcome in both groups. Initial and long-term treatment is also summarised. rESULTS: A total of 16 patients were included in the study consisting of 12 anti-MOG and 4 anti-AQP4 positive patients. Nine of the 16 patients were female and the average age of onset was 29.2 y in the MOG group and 42 y in the AQP4 group. There was no statistically significant correlation(Pearson correlation) between GCL thickness and presenting and final VA [r(10)=0.081, P=0.08 and r(10)=0.089, P=0.34 respectively]. The same statistical analysis was performed for the correlation between retinal nerve fibre layer(rNFL) and VA and similar outcomes wereobserved [r(10)=0.04, P=0.22 and r(10)=0.09, P=0.04]. No correlation was seen for initial rNFL thickness and final visual outcome in this group either [r(2)=0.19, P=0.38]. Visual field testing and radiological findings for each group are described.
