Assessment of scapulohumeral rhythm for scapular plane shoulder elevation using a modified digital inclinometer

AIM: To develop a better understanding of scapulohumeral rhythm during scapular plane shoulder ***: Thirteen healthy, college-aged subjects participated in this study. Subjects were free from any upper extremity, neck or back pathology. A modified digital inclinometer was utilized to measure scapular upward rotation of the subject's dominant shoulder. Upward rotation was measured statically as subjects performed clinically relevant amounts of shoulder elevation in the scapular plane. Testing order was randomized by arm position. Scapular upward rotation was assessed over the entire arc of motion and over a series of increments. The percent contributions to shoulder elevation for the scapula and glenohumeral joint were calculated. Scapulohumeral rhythm was assessed and represented the ratio of glenohumeral motion to scapulothoracic motion(glenohumeral elevation: scapular upward rotation). A one-way ANOVA wasused to compare scapular upward rotation between elevation ***: Scapulohumeral rhythm for the entire arc of shoulder elevation was equal to a ratio of 2.34 :1 and ranged from 40.01:1 to 0.90:1 when assessed across the different increments of humeral elevation. Total scapular motion increased over the arc of shoulder elevation. The scapula contributed 2.53% of total motion for the first 30 degrees of shoulder elevation, between 20.87% and 37.53% for 30o-90 o of shoulder elevation, and 52.73% for 90o-120 o of shoulder elevation. Statistically significant differences in scapular upward rotation were identified across the shoulder elevation increments [F(3,48) = 12.63, p = 0.0001].CONCLUSION: Clinically, we must recognize the usefulness of the inclinometer in documenting the variable nature of scapulohumeral rhythm in healthy and injured shoulders.

Mastocytosis is a rare group of disorders with chronic and episodic mast cell release of mediators which can have systemic and cutaneous manifestations. Triggers of anaphylaxis include commonly used medications for anesthesia, analgesia, and muscle relaxation. There is little in the literature regarding local anesthesia in emergent surgery for patients with mastocytosis. This case details the use of a peripheral nerve blockade for multiple surgeries and pain control in a patient with biopsy-proven mastocytosis.

Rice response to water application is necessary for increased productivity;hence,this study was aimed at establishing the agronomic responses of rice crop to differential water supplies.A two-year dry season experiment was conducted on the research farm of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture(IITA),Ibadan,*** upland rice varieties(NERICA 2 and NERICA 4)were planted on a 5 m×5 m plot in a randomized complete block design with four treatments and two replicates based on different water *** scheduling was designed as 100%ET,75%ET,50%ET and 25%ET for the treatments *** parameters such as plant height,root depth,canopy shading(CS),leaf area index(LAI),panicle and tiller configuration,biomass and grain yield in relation to crop water use were obtained and the results were subjected to statistical *** values of highest plant height(89.0 and 100.3 cm),deepest root depth(22.1 and 23.8 cm),panicle diameter(3.9 and 4.5 cm),panicle length(26.1 and 25.7 cm),LAI,3.27 and 3.95,CS,0.22 and 0.99 were obtained for both NERICA 2 and NERICA 4 *** width(1.3 and 1.4 cm),total tillers(14 and 12)and leaf length(36.9 and 38 cm)were also observed for the two varieties *** highest total grain and biomass yields of 1.94 t/ha and 1.95 t/ha were observed in 100%ET treatment for NERICA 2 while the least values of 0.29 t/ha and 1.09 t/ha were observed in 25%ET *** for NERICA 4,the highest values(1.90 t/ha and 2.27 t/ha)were from 100%ET and the least(0.38 t/ha and 2.29 t/ha)in 25%*** result of ANOVA showed significant differences in biomass and grain yield,LAI,CS,plant height and root depth among treatments(pponse of rice.

BACKGROUND probiotics have shown promise in alleviating symptoms of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome(IBS-D);however,the certainty of evidence is *** randomized controlled dose-ranging trials are warranted on promising single-strain *** To investigate the clinical efficacy of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum(***)Lpla33(DSM34428)in adults with *** This is a randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled,multi-center,and doseranging *** hundred and seven adults,18-70 years of age,with IBS-D,according to Rome IV criteria,were allocated(1:1:1)to receive placebo or *** Lpla33 at 1×10^(9)(1B)or 1×10^(10)(10B)colony-forming units/d over an 8-wk intervention *** primary outcome was the change in IBS severity scoring system(IBS-SSS)total score after 8 wk,while secondary and exploratory outcomes included abdominal pain severity,IBS related quality of life,stool and microbial profile,and perceived *** IBS-SSS was significantly reduced,after 8 wk,in participants receiving *** 1B(-128.45±83.30;pppared to placebo(-58.82±74.75).Further,a dose-ranging effect was observed,with a greater absolute reduction in the *** 10B group(ppain,abdominal distension,bowel habits,and quality of life was observed in both *** groups compared to placebo(pparticipants administered *** 1B and 10B,respectively,were classified as stool consistency responders based on a reduction in diarrheal stool form,as compared to 26.3%in the placebo group(ppla33(DSM34428)is well tolerated and improves IBS symptom severity with a dose-ranging effect and a corresponding normalization of bowel habits in adults with IBS-D.

The novel interleukin(IL)-1 family cytokine IL-33 has been shown to activate T helper 2(Th2)lymphocytes,mast cells and basophils to produce an array of proinflammatory cytokines,as well as to mediate blood eosinophilia,IgE secretion and hypertrophy of airway epithelium in *** the present study,we characterized the activation of human eosinophils by IL-33,and investigated the underlying intracellular signaling ***-33 markedly enhanced eosinophil survival and upregulated cell surface expression of the adhesion molecule intercellular adhesion molecule(ICAM)-1 on eosinophils,but it suppressed that of ICAM-3 and *** addition,IL-33 mediates significant release of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 and the chemokines CXCL8 and *** found that IL33-mediated enhancement of survival,induction of adhesion molecules,and release of cytokines and chemokines were differentially regulated by activation of the nuclear factor(NF)-KB,p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(MApK)and extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK)***,we compared the above IL-33 activities with two structurally and functionally related cytokines,IL-1 B and ***-1β,but not IL-18,markedly upregulated cell surface expression of ***-1βand IL-18 also significantly enhanced eosinophil survival,and induced the release of IL-6 and chemokines CXCL8 and CCL2 via the activation of the NF-κB,p38 MApK and ERK *** efects on the release of IL-6 were also observed in combined treatment withIL-1B,IL-18 and *** together,our findings provide insight into IL-33-mediated activation of eosinophils via differential intracellular signaling cascades in the immunopathogenesis of allergic inflammation.

●AIM:To compare the success rate and complications of adjuvant use of mitomycin C and triamcinoloneimpregnated biodegradable nasal packing(TABp)in endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy(DCR).And to evaluate the efficacy of combining intraoperative mitomycin C and TABp for endoscopic DCR.●METHODS:A total of 198 eyes of 148 patients who underwent endoscopic DCR for acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction were retrospectively *** patients were randomly divided into three groups:Group A included patients treated without intraoperative mitomycin C but with TABp,Group B included patients treated without triamcinolone but with intraoperative mitomycin C and normal saline-impregnated nasal packing,and Group C included patients treated with intraoperative mitomycin C and TABp.●RESULTS:The results revealed no significant difference in the overall success rates between Groups A(86.8%)and B(89.2%;p=0.377).However,Group C(97.5%)showed a significantly higher overall success rate than Groups A and *** incidence of granulomas was significantly lower in group C(5%)than in Groups A(20.8%)and B(15.2%;p=0.009).Other complications,such as crust,synechiae,and revision surgery,did not differ significantly among the three groups.●CONCLUSION:The combination of intraoperative mitomycin C and TABp effectively prevents granulomas and enhances surgical success ***,there is no statistically significant difference observed between the use of mitomycin C or TABp alone.
