Response of Two Inexpensive Commercially Produced Soil Moisture Sensors to Changes in Water Content and Soil Texture

The use of low-cost (<200 USD) soil moisture sensors in crop production systems has the potential to give inference on plant water status and therein drive irrigation events. However, commercially available sensors in this price range vary in sensing methodologies and limited information on sensor to sensor relationship is available. The objective of this research was to test the response of the Watermark 200SS and Decagon 10HS sensors to changes in water content of three dissimilar soils representing common soils in Arkansas row-crop production in nine plastic, 19 L containers under variable environmental conditions. Both sensors were influenced by changes in soil temperature but the magnitudes of the temperature responses were small relative to the moisture responses. Furthermore, the 10HS sensor did not indicate a significant impact of soil texture on estimated volumetric water contents (VWCs). The small sphere of influence on the tested soil moisture parameters coupled with the substantial evaporative demands and temperatures under which this experiment was conducted resulted in suspected non-uniform drying and wetting of the tested containers. Subsequently, non-linear relationships were noted between 10HS estimated VWCs and actual container VWCs and the 200SS predicted lower water potentials than calculated by converting container VWC to soil water potential. The failure of the sensors to accurately predict container VWC highlights the importance of understanding the relatively small quantity of soil on which these sensors rely as well as the potential variability in soil moisture within a very limited volume. The authors caution users of sensors that soil variability may be one of the most important considerations in sensor deployment.

Background:Traumatic pancreatic injuries are rare,and guidelines specifying management are controversial and difficult to apply in the acute clinical *** to sparse data on these injuries,we carried out a retrospective review to determine outcomes following surgical or non-surgical management of traumatic pancreatic *** hypothesize a higher morbidity and mortality rate in patients treated surgically when compared to patients treated ***:We performed a retrospective review of data from four trauma centers in New York from 1990–2014,comparing patients who had blunt traumatic pancreatic injuries who were managed operatively to those managed *** compared continuous variables using the Mann-Whitney U test and categorical variables using the chi-square and Fisher’s exact *** analysis was performed to determine the possible confounding factors associated with mortality in both treatment ***:Twenty nine patients were managed operatively and 32 *** was a significant difference between the operative and non-operative groups in median age(37.0 vs.16.2 years,P=0.016),grade of pancreatic injury(grade I;30.8 vs.85.2%,P value for all comparisons<0.0001),median injury severity score(ISS)(16.0 vs.4.0,P=0.002),blood transfusion(55.2 vs.15.6%,P=0.0012),other abdominal injuries(79.3 vs.38.7%,P=0.0014),pelvic fractures(17.2 vs.0.00%,P=0.020),intensive care unit(ICU)admission(86.2 vs.50.0%,P=0.003),median length of stay(LOS)(16.0 vs.4.0 days,P<0.0001),and mortality(27.6 vs.3.1%,P=0.010).Conclusions:Patients with traumatic pancreatic injuries treated operatively were more severely injured and suffered greater complications than those treated *** greater morbidity and mortality associated with these patients warrants further study to determine optimal triage strategies and which subset of patients is likely to benefit from surgery.

Impacts of Recent Infection Testing Integration into HIV Surveillance in Ekiti State, South West Nigeria: A Retrospective Cross Sectional Study

Background: Timely detection of recent HIV infections is critical in achieving the HIV epidemic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of integrating the Recent Infection Testing Algorithm in HIV surveillance in Ekiti State, South West Nigeria. Method: Data from the Nigeria Medical Records System (NMRS)/National Data Repository (NDR) and Index Testing (IT) Services data capturing tools were abstracted for a retrospective cross-sectional study of 719 newly diagnosed HIV-positive cases who were screened for HIV incident infection using Asante rapid recency test kits between August 2020 and June 2022 at 5 selected recency testing health facilities. The venous blood (10 ml) of all the rapid Asante tested recent patients were collected into an EDTA tube and processed for viral load testing. The plasma level of HIV-1 RNA was quantified using the CAP/CTM and cobas 4800 platform at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital PCR Laboratory Ife. Chi-square was used to characterize the recency status of the patients. A measure of the association was done using Chi-square, while the p-value of 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The median age of the participants was 39 years. The result from the study showed that of the total number of 719 new cases of diagnosed HIV-positive, 626 of them were screened for rapid Test for Recency infection (RTRI) (87%). Overall, we found that 1.8% (11/626) of clients were classified as recent. The investigation also showed that from the index cases of the 11 confirmed recent infections, a total number of 125 additional positive cases were found. Conclusion: This result indicated a rise in the number of cases discovered in the State. Therefore, incorporating recency testing within regular HIV testing programs becomes essential in order to prioritize clients for index testing and provide useful information on transmission clusters.

Objective:Bone metastasis occurs in up to 90%of men with advanced prostate cancer and leads to fractures,severe pain and *** metastases induce a spectrum of types of bone lesions which can respond differently to therapy even within individual prostate cancer ***,the special environment of the bone makes the disease more complicated and incurable.A model in which bone lesions are reproducibly induced that mirrors the complexity seen in patients would be invaluable for pre-clinical testing of novel *** microstructural changes in the femurs of mice implanted with PCSD1,a new patient-derived xenograft from a surgical prostate cancer bone metastasis specimen,were ***:Quantitative micro-computed tomography(micro-CT)and histological analyses were performed to evaluate the effects of direct injection of PCSD1 cells or media alone(Control)into the right femurs of Rag2/gc/male ***:Bone lesions formed only in femurs of mice injected with PCSD1 *** volume(BV)was significantly decreased at the proximal and distal ends of the femurs(p<0.01)whereas BV(p<0.05)and bone shaft diameter(p<0.01)were significantly increased along the femur ***:PCSD1 cells reproducibly induced bone loss leading to osteolytic lesions at the ends of the femur,and,in contrast,induced aberrant bone formation leading to osteoblastic lesions along the femur ***,the interaction of PCSD1 cells with different bone region-specific microenvironments specified the type of bone *** approach can be used to determine if different bone regions support more therapy resistant tumor growth,thus,requiring novel treatments.
