Waterbird use of farm dams in south-eastern Australia:abundance and influence of biophysical and landscape characteristics

Background: While agriculture has taken much environmental water in Australia's Murray-Darling Basin, agricultural expansion has resulted in a vast number of farm dams, almost three-quarters of a million in the Murray-Darling Basin ***: Over a summer we studied(1) waterbird abundance and species richness and(2) the influence of biophysical and landscape characteristics across 49 farm dams at a large mixed-enterprise farm in northern Victoria on the southern reach of the Murray-Darling ***: On average, dams were found to host 27.1 ± 71.1 individuals/ha and 1.8 ± 2.9 species per pond. Such densities are comparable to those on natural wetlands. Dam surface area and perimeter and amount of vegetation were positively and strongly correlated with the Rallidae density(birds/ha), but no other parameters were strongly correlated with any other functional group. The landscape in which the dams were embedded had a highly significant effect(p given at our site they supported similar densities of individuals and species to natural wetlands, and given the fact that there are 710,539 farm dams in the Murray-Darling Basin, which hosts much of Australia's waterbird fauna, it is reasonable to suggest that farm dams are overlooked, and possibly very important, avian biodiversity hotspots. It also highlights the importance of a landscape setting, in which dams are situated, on the number of birds using the dams.

Assessing risks from mining-induced ground movements near gas wells

Automatic sub-pixel co-registration of Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager and Sentinel-2A Multi-Spectral Instrument images using phase correlation and machine learning based mapping

This study investigates misregistration issues between Landsat-8/Operational Land Imager and Sentinel-2A/Multi-Spectral Instrument at 30 m resolution,and between multi-temporal Sentinel-2A images at 10 m resolution using a phase-correlation approach and multiple transformation ***-registration of 45 Landsat-8 to Sentinel-2A pairs and 37 Sentinel-2A to Sentinel-2A pairs were *** correlation proved to be a robust approach that allowed us to identify hundreds and thousands of control points on images acquired more than 100 days ***,misregistration of up to 1.6 pixels at 30 m resolution between Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A images,and 1.2 pixels and 2.8 pixels at 10 m resolution between multi-temporal Sentinel-2A images from the same and different orbits,respectively,were *** non-linear random forest regression used for constructing the mapping function showed best results in terms of root mean square error(RMSE),yielding an average RMSE error of 0.07±0.02 pixels at 30 m resolution,and 0.09±0.05 and 0.15±0.06 pixels at 10 m resolution for the same and adjacent Sentinel-2A orbits,respectively,for multiple tiles and multiple conditions.A simpler 1st order polynomial function(affine transformation)yielded RMSE of 0.08±0.02 pixels at 30 m resolution and 0.12±0.06(same Sentinel-2A orbits)and 0.20±0.09(adjacent orbits)pixels at 10 m resolution.

The occurrence of obesity has increased across the whole world. Many epidemiological studies have indicated that obesity strongly contributes to the development of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, liver diseases and other disorders, accounting for a heavy burden on the public and on health-care systems every year. Excess energy uptake induces adipocyte hypertrophy, hyperplasia and formation of visceral fat in other non-adipose tissues to evoke cardiovascular disease, liver diseases. Adipose tissue can also secrete adipokines and inflammatory cytokines to affect the local microenvironment,induce insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, and activate associated inflammatory signaling pathways. This further exacerbates the development and progression of obesity-associated diseases. Although some progress in the treatment of obesity has been achieved in preclinical and clinical studies, the progression and pathogenesis of obesity-induced diseases are complex and unclear. We still need to understand their links to better guide the treatment of obesity and associated diseases. In this review, we review the links between obesity and other diseases, with a view to improve the future management and treatment of obesity and its co-morbidities.

Improved guided bone regeneration by combined application of unmodified, fresh autologous adipose derived regenerative cells and plasma rich in growth factors:A first-in-human case report and literature review

BACKgROUND Novel strategies are needed for improving guided bone regeneration(gBR) in oral surgery prior to implant placement, particularly in maxillary sinus augmentation(gBR-MSA) and in lateral alveolar ridge augmentation(LRA). This study tested the hypothesis that the combination of freshly isolated, unmodified autologous adipose-derived regenerative cells(UA-ADRCs), fraction 2 of plasma rich in growth factors(PRgF-2) and an osteoinductive scaffold(OIS)(UAADRC/PRgF-2/OIS) is superior to the combination of PRgF-2 and the same OIS alone(PRgF-2/OIS) in gBR-MSA/*** SUMMARY A 79-year-old patient was treated with a bilateral external sinus lift procedure as well as a bilateral lateral alveolar ridge augmentation. gBR-MSA/LRA was performed with UA-ADRC/PRgF-2/OIS on the right side, and with PRgF-2/OIS on the left side. Biopsies were collected at 6 wk and 34 wk after gBRMSA/LRA. At the latter time point implants were placed. Radiographs(32 mo follow-up time) demonstrated excellent bone healing. No radiological or histological signs of inflammation were observed. Detailed histologic,histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical analysis of the biopsies evidenced that UA-ADRC/PRgF-2/OIS resulted in better and faster bone regeneration than PRgF-2/*** gBR-MSA with UA-ADRCs, PRgF-2, and an OIS shows effectiveness without adverse effects.

Solution for fractional potential KdV and Benjamin equations using the novel technique

In this paper,we find the solutions for fractional potential Korteweg-de Vries(p-KdV)and Benjamin equations using q-homotopy analysis transform method(q-HATM).The considered method is the mixture of q-homotopy analysis method and Laplace transform,and the Caputo fractional operator is considered in the present *** projected solution procedure manipulates and controls the obtained results in a large admissible ***,it offers a simple algorithm to adjust the convergence province of the obtained *** validate the q-HATM is accurate and reliable,the numerical simulations have been conducted for both equations and the outcomes are revealed through the plots and *** between the obtained solutions with the exact solutions exhibits that,the considered method is efficient and effective in solving nonlinear problems associated with science and technology.

Performance of silver nanoparticles in the catalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction in neutral media： Efficiency limitation due to hydrogen peroxide escape

The electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction （ORR） at neutral pH of citrate-capped silver nanoparticles （diameter = 18 nm） supported on glassy carbon （gC） is investigated voltammetrically. Novelly, the modification of the substrate by nanoparticles sticking to form a random nanoparticle array and the voltammetric experiments are carried out simultaneously by immersion of the gC electrode in an air-saturated 0.1 M NaC104 solution （pH = 5.8） containing chemically-synthesized nanoparticles. The experimental voltammograms of the resulting nanoparticle array are simulated with homemade programs according to the two-proton, two-electron reduction of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide where the first electron transfer is rate determining. In the case of silver electrodes, the hydrogen peroxide generated is partially further reduced to water via heterogeneous decomposition. Comparison of the results obtained on a silver macroelectrode and silver nanoparticles indicates that, for the silver nanoparticles and particle coverages （0.035%-0.457%） employed in this study, the ORR electrode kinetics is slower and the production of hydrogen peroxide larger on the glassy carbon-supported nanoparticles than on bulk silver.

Root Plate growth in Sunflower and Its Relevance to Sclerotinia Basal Stalk Rot

Sclerotinia basal stalk rot (BSR) of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is a fungal disease of the roots that causes symptoms of wilt and a basal stem lesion. Evaluating root plate growth could improve our understanding of BSR. Separate studies were conducted to determine the effect of sunflower growth stage or genotype on root plate diameter in North American environments. Root plate diameter of cultivated hybrids at reproductive growth stages was 3 to 4 times larger than vegetative stages. Cultivated hybrids had larger root plate diameter than interspecific lines. These results have implications for artificial inoculation methods that evaluate genotypes for BSR resistance in the field or greenhouse. Disease escapes can occur if field-grown plants are inoculated too far from the root plate and/or too early at vegetative growth stages. Side-dressing mycelium-infested cereal grain closer (i.e., 10 cm) to plants at reproductive growth stages (i.e., R1 - R4) can increase disease pressure and reduce disease escapes. These guidelines for the field can be used to validate results from artificial inoculations in the greenhouse.

Strategies towards statistically robust interpretations of in situ U-Pb zircon geochronology

Zircon U-Pb geochronology has become a keystone tool across Earth science, arguably providing the gold standard in resolving deep geological time. The development of rapid in situ analysis of zircon （via laser ablation and secondary ionization mass spectrometry） has allowed for large amounts of data to be generated in a relatively short amount of time and such large volume datasets offer the ability to address a range of geological questions that would otherwise remain intractable （e.g. detrital zircons as a sedi- ment fingerprinting method）. The ease of acquisition, while bringing benefit to the Earth science com- munity, has also led to diverse interpretations of geochronological data. In this work we seek to refocus U -Pb zircon geochronology toward best practice by providing a robust statistically coherent workflow. We discuss a range of data filtering approaches and their inherent limitations （e.g. discordance and the reduced chi-squared; MSWD）. We evaluate appropriate mechanisms to calculate the most geologically appropriate age from both 238U/206pb and 207pb/206pb ratios and demonstrate the cross over position when chronometric power swaps between these ratios. As our in situ analytical techniques become progressively more precise, appropriate statistical handing of U-Pb datasets will become increasingly pertinent.
