The ubiquitous occurrence of plastic nano-and micro-particle contamination has raised concerns about its potential risks and impacts on the global environment,especially in aquatic *** of aquatic species,from different trophic levels,have been affected by this“new”contaminant,which has been reported mainly in their digestive ***,current knowledge about plastic nano-and micro-particle spread and the potential impact on aquatic biota is growing ***,there is a significant lack of understanding of the trophic spread of microplastic contamination and integration of knowledge derived from laboratory assays with that from field research is *** experiments are unable to deal with differentiating between directly and indirectly ingested plastic *** the other hand,laboratory assays evaluating the influence of plastic microparticles and of their adhered or constitutive toxins on representative species cannot satisfactorily simulate the real *** a result,little is known about the effective transfer of plastic particles through the trophic net and the resulting human health *** present review seeks to gather information that can give a more accurate idea of the current situation and future challenges to be faced in mitigating the environmental and human effects of plastic particle pollution in aquatic,particularly estuarine,ecosystems.

Silvery fullerene in Ag102 nanosaucer

Despite the discovery of a series of fullerenes and a handful of noncarbon clusters with the typical topology of Ih-c60, the smallest fullerene with a large degree of curvature, c20, and its other-element counterparts are difficult to isolate experimentally. In coinage metal nanoclusters（Ncs）, the first all-gold fullerene, Au32, was discovered after a long-lasting pursuit, but the isolation of similar silvery fullerene structures is still challenging. Herein, we report a flying saucer-shaped 102-nuclei silver Nc（Ag102） with a silvery fullerene kernel of Ag32, which is embraced by a robust cyclic anionic passivation layer of（KPO4）10. This Ag32kernel can be viewed as a non-centered icosahedron Ag12encaged into a dodecahedron Ag20, forming the silvery fullerene of Ag12@Ag20. The anionic layer（KPO4）10is located at the interlayer between the Ag32kernel and Ag70shell, passivating the Ag32silvery fullerene and templating the Ag70shell. The ~tBuPhS-and cF3cOO-ligands on the silver shell show a regioselective arrangement with the 60 ~tBuPhS-ligands as expanders covering the upper and lower of the flying saucer and 10 cF3cOO-as terminators neatly encircling the edges of the structure. In addition, Ag102 shows excellent photothermal conversion efficiency（η） from the visible to near-infrared region（η = 67.1% ± 0.9% at 450 nm, 60.9% ± 0.9% at 660 nm and 50.2% ± 0.5% at 808 nm）, rendering it a promising material for photothermal converters and potential application in remote laser ignition. This work not only captures silver kernels with the topology of the smallest fullerene c20, but also provides a pathway for incorporating alkali metal（M） into coinage metal Ncs via M-oxoanions.

The retention of dense and well-functioning microbial biomass is crucial for effective pollutant removal in several biological wastewater treatment *** solids retention is often achieved through aggregation of microbial communities into dense,spherical aggregates known as granules,which were initially discovered in the *** granules have since been widely applied in upflow anaerobic digesters for waste-to-energy ***,granular biomass has been applied in aerobic wastewater treatment and anaerobic ammonium oxidation(anammox)*** mechanisms underpinning the formation of methanogenic,aerobic,and anammox granules are the subject of ongoing *** each granule type has been extensively studied in isolation,there has been a lack of comparative studies among these granulation *** is likely that there are some unifying concepts that are shared by all three sludge *** these unifying concepts could allow a unified theory of granulation to be ***,we review the granulation mechanisms of methanogenic,aerobic,and anammox granular sludge,highlighting several common concepts,such as the role of extracellular polymeric substances,cations,and operational parameters like upflow velocity and shear *** have then identified some unique features of each granule type,such as different internal structures,microbial compositions,and quorum sensing ***,we propose that future research should prioritize aspects of microbial ecology,such as community assembly or interspecies interactions in individual granules during their formation and growth.

Association between heavy metals and antibiotic-resistant human pathogens in environmental reservoirs: A review

Antibiotic resistance in human pathogens can proliferate under selective pressures. Heavy metals in environmental reservoirs may contribute to selecting antibiotic-resistant strains. To determine the associations between heavy metals and antibiotic resistance, a literature review was conducted to systematically collect and categorize evidence for co-occurrence of resistance to heavy metals and antibiotics within human pathogenic bacteria in water, wastewater, and soil. In total, 42 publications adhered to inclusion criteria. Across the reservoirs, zinc and cadmium were the most commonly observed heavy metals associated with resistance to antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli were the most commonly studied bacteria with reported co-occurrence of resistance to several heavy metals and antibiotic classes. As co-selecting agents, prevalence of heavy metals in the environment can proliferate resistance to heavy metals and antibiotics through co-resistance and crossresistance mechanisms. In comparing different reservoirs, soils and sediments harbor higher heavy metal and antibiotic resistances compared to water environments. Additionally, abiotic factors such as pH can affect the solubility and hence, the availability of heavy metals to bacterial pathogens. Overall, our review demonstrates heavy metals act as co-selecting agents in the proliferation of antibiotic resistance in human pathogens in multiple environmental reservoirs. More studies that include statistical data are needed to further describe the exposure-response relationships between heavy metals and antibiotic resistance in different environmental media. Moreover, integration of culturebased and molecular-based methods in future studies are recommended to better inform our understanding of bacterial co- and cross-resistance mechanisms to heavy metals and antibiotics.

Reforestation Programs in Southwest china:Reported Success,Observed Failure, and the Reasons Why

Ever since the disastrous floods of 1998, the chinese government has used the Natural Forest Protection and Sloping Land conversion Programs to promote afforestation and reforestation as means to reduce runoff, control erosion, and stabilize local livelihoods. These two ambitious programs have been reported as large-scale successes, contributing to an overall increase in china’s forest cover and to the stated goals of environmental stabilization. A small-scale field study at the project level of the implementation of these two programs in Baiwu Township, Yanyuan county, Sichuan, casts doubt upon the accuracy and reliability of these claims of success; ground observations revealed utter failure in some sites and only marginal success in others. Reasons for this discrepancy are posited as involving ecological, economic, and bureaucratic factors. Further research is suggested to determine whether these discrepancies are merely local aberrations or represent larger-scale failures in reforestation programs.

Growth performance, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant capacity,blood biochemical biomarkers and cytokines expression in broiler chickens fed different phytogenic levels

The effects of inclusion levels of a phytogenic feed additive(PFA), characterized by menthol anethol and eugenol, on broiler growth performance, nutrient digestibility, biochemical biomarkers and total antioxidant capacity(TAc) of plasma and meat, as well as on the relative expression of selected cytokines,were studied in a 42-d experiment. A total of 225 one-day-old male cobb broiler chickens were assigned into 3 treatments, with 5 replicates of 15 chickens each. chickens were fed maize-soybean meal basal diets following a 3 phase(i.e., starter, grower and finisher) feeding program. Depending on PFA inclusion level, treatments were: no PFA(PFA-0), PFA at 100 mg/kg(PFA-100) and PFA at 150 mg/kg(PFA-150).Feed and water were available ad libitum. Feed conversion ratio(FcR) during finisher phase was improved quadratically(P creasing PFA level. Overall, increasing PFA level increased body weight gain(BWG) in a linear(P c(P compared with PFA-0. Total tract apparent digestibility of dry matter increased linearly(P cally(P creasing PFA level. The apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen(AMEn) also increased linearly(P creasing PFA level resulted in a linear(P crease in blood plasma TAc. Expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-18(IL-18) was reduced linearly(P creasing PFA level. In conclusion, PFA inclusion at 100 mg/kg diet positively influenced performance, whereas PFA inclusion at150 mg/kg resulted in a stronger improvement in AMEn and plasma TAc. Finally, PFA inclusion resulted in a pattern of reduced pro-inflammatory biomarker IL-18 at spleen. Overall, this study provides evidence for the beneficial role of PFA as a natural growth and health promoter in broiler chickens that needs to be further confirmed in field studies.
