Introduction:since their development in the late 1970s in Germany,extensive green roofs(EGR)have become increasingly popular as mitigation tools for urban environmental issues around the *** are planted with select species,which ensure consistent cover and performance over *** research presented herein is part of a systematic re-evaluation of EGR technology since the German industry ***:Given the opportunity to access a small sample of old EGRs installed over 20 years ago in south-west Germany,this research surveyed the vegetation and substrate with an interest in describing these parameters with time-through-space ***:similar to previous studies,this preliminary work found correlations between roof age with vegetation(cover abundance and species diversity)and substrate properties(e.g.,depth,organic content,pH,and nutrients).Roof age had positive relationship with soil organic content(Corg),and negative relationships with substrate depth and soil *** soil variables are inter-related,as shallow acidic substrates create unfavourable conditions for decomposition and thereby the accumulation of *** variables correlated with EGR vegetation,suggesting a trend of simplified species composition over ***,Corg had a negative relationship with cover and species diversity of most life forms;only sedum species had positive associations with ***:Considering the dynamics associated with shallow mineral substrates,and the greater floristic diversity of younger roofs,simple sedum-based vegetation may represent a steady state for conventional EGRs.

Effects of historically familiar and novel predator odors on the physiology of an introduced prey

Predator odors can elicit fear responses in prey and predator odor recognition is generally associated with physiological responses. Prey species are often more likely to respond to the odor of familiar ra- ther than alien predators. However, predator na＇ivety in an introduced prey species has rarely been investigated. We examined the physiological response, as shown by changes in ventilatory vari- ables, of an introduced terrestrial herbivore, the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus, in Australia, to the odor of potential predators and to control odors （distilled water and horse）, to explore if res- ponses were limited to historical （cat and fox） predators, or extended to historically novel predators （snake and quoll）. All odors except distilled water elicited a response, with rabbits showing long- term higher respiratory frequencies and lower tidal volumes after introduction of the odors, indi- cating an increase in alertness. However, the intensity of the rabbits＇ reaction could not be directly linked to any pattern of response with respect to the history of predator-prey relationships. Rabbits exhibited significantly stronger reactions in response to both cat and quoll odors than they did to dis- tilled water, but responses to horse, fox, and snake odor were similar to that of water. Our results show that the introduced rabbit can respond to both historical and novel predators in Australia, and suggest that shared evolutionary history is not necessarily a prerequisite to predator odor recognition.

Understanding the greenhouse gas(GHG)emission from rice paddy fields is essential to come up with appropriate countermeasure in response to global ***,GHG emissions from paddy fields in south Korea are not well *** objectives of this study were to estimate the carbon dioxide(CO_(2))and methane(CH_(4))emissions from rice paddy fields in south Korea,under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5(RCP-8.5)climate change scenario using the DNDC(i.e.,DeNitrification-DeComposition)model at 1-km^(2)*** performance of the model was verified with field data collected using a closed chamber,which supports the application of the model to south *** the model predictions and field measurements showed that most(>95%)GHG emissions occur in the cropping period,between April and *** a baseline(assuming no climate change),the national sums of the CO_(2)and CH_(4)emissions for the 2020 s and 2090 s were estimated to be 5.8×10^(6)and 6.0×10^(6)t CO_(2)-equivalents(CO_(2)-eq)year^(-1)for CO_(2)and 6.4×10^(6)and 6.6×10^(6)t CO_(2)-eq year^(-1)for CH_(4),respectively,indicating no significant changes over 80 *** RCP-8.5,in the 2090 s,CH_(4)emissions were predicted to increase by 10.7×10^(6)and 14.9×10^(6)t CO_(2)-eq year^(-1),for a 10-or 30-cm tillage depth,***,the CO_(2)emissions gradually decreased with rising temperatures,due to reduced root *** tillage increased the emissions of both GHGs,with a more pronounced effect for CH_(4)than CO_(2).Intermittent drainage in the middle of the cropping season can attenuate the CH_(4)emissions from paddy *** findings of this work will aid in developing nationwide policies on agricultural land management in the face of climate change.

Clouds are often appealed to when an objection is raised to the rationalist knowledge paradigm of the clear and distinct,as formulated by Rene *** such cases,clouds serve to establish an anti-classically oriented,non-hierarchical and non-determinative,chaos-theoretically informed *** informed by this tendency,this essay proposes to examine clouds as an epistemological challenge,capable of exposing specific tensions in science,philosophy,and art *** fields negotiate questions of perception and representation,hence aesthetic problems,on the basis of which this contribution formulates an“aesthetics from below.”such an aesthetics does not proceed from aesthetic theories,nor is it based on fuzzy concepts;rather,it begins with reflection on perception-based experience and specifically historical artifacts and seeks to lead these toward the work of *** this essay,this is accomplished through an examination of the significance of clouds in siegfried Kracauer’s philosophical reflections on history.

Effects of heavy rainfall on the composition of airborne bacterial communities

Wet deposition scavenges particles and particle-associated bacteria from the air column, but the impact of raindrops on various surfaces on Earth causes emission of surface-associated bacteria into the air column. Thus, after rainfall, these two mechanisms are expected to cause changes in airborne bacterial community composition （BCC）. In this study, aerosol samples were collected at a suburban site in seoul, Korea before and after three heavy rainfall events in April, May, and July 2011. BCC was investigated by pyrosequencing the 16s rRNA gene in aerosol samples. Interestingly, the relative abundance of non-spore forming Actinobacteria operational taxonomic units （OTUs） was always higher in post-rain aerosol samples. In particular, the absolute and relative abundances of airborne Propionibacteriaceae always increased after rainfall, whereas those of airborne Firmicutes, including Carnobacteriaceae and Clostridiales, consistently decreased. Marine bacterial sequences, which were temporally important in aerosol samples, also decreased after rainfall events. Further, increases in pathogen-like sequences were often observed in post-rain air samples. Rainfall events seemed to affect airborne BCCs by the combined action of the two mechanisms, with potentially adverse effects on human and plant health.

A new spherical torus called VEsT （Versatile Experiment spherical Torus） is designed, constructed and successfully commissioned at seoul National University. A unique design feature of the VEsT is two partial solenoid coils installed at both vertical ends of a center stack, which can provide sufficient magnetic fluxes to initiate tokamak plasmas while keeping a low aspect ratio configuration in the central region. According to initial double null merging start-up scenario using the partial solenoid coils, apprdpriate p6wer supplies for driving a toroidal field coil, outer poloidal field coils, and the partial solenoid Coils are fabricated and successfully commissioned. For reliable start-up, a pre-ionization system with two cost-effective homemade magnetron power supplies is also prepared. In addition, magnetic and spectroscopic diagnostics with appropriate data acquisition and control systems are well prepared for initial operation of the device. The VEsT is ready for tokamak plasma operation by completing and commissioning most of the designed components.
