Contrasting oxidation states of low-Ti and high-Ti magmas control Ni-Cu sulfide and Fe-Ti oxide mineralization in Emeishan Large Igneous Province

magmatic Ni-Cu-(PGE) sulfide and Fe-Ti oxide deposits in plume-related large igneous provinces(LIPs)are commonly related to low-Ti and high-Ti series magmas, respectively, but the major factors that control such a relationship of metallogenic types and magma compositions are unclear. magma fOcontrols sulfur status and relative timing of Fe-Ti oxide saturation in mafic magmas, which may help clarify this issue. Taking the Emeishan LIP as a case, we calculated the magma fOof the high-Ti and low-Ti picrites based on the olivine-spinel oxygen barometer, and the partitioning of V in olivine. The obtained fOof the high-Ti series magma(FmQ + 1.1 to FmQ + 2.6) is higher than that of the low-Ti series magma(FmQ-0.5to FmQ + 0.5). The magma fOof the high-Ti and low-Ti picrites containing Fo > 90 olivine reveals that the mantle source of the high-Ti series is likely more oxidized than that of the low-Ti series. The results using the ’lambda REE’ approach show that the high-Ti series may have been derived from relatively oxidized mantle with garnet pyroxenite component. The S contents at sulfide saturation(SCSS) of the two series magmas were calculated based on liquid compositions obtained from the alpha melts modeling, and the results show that the low-Ti series magma could easily attain the sulfide saturation as it has low fOwith S being dominantly as S. In contrast, the oxidized high-Ti series magma is difficult to attain the sulfide saturation, but could crystallize Fe-Ti oxides at magma mgO content of ~7.0 wt.%. Thus, contrasting magma fOof low-Ti and high-Ti series in plume-related LIPs may play an important role in producing two different styles of metallogeny.

β-defensins and the epididymis： contrasting influences of prenatal, postnatal, and adult scenarios

β-defensins are components of host defense, with antimicrobial and pleiotropic immuno-modulatory properties. Research over the last 15 years has demonstrated abundant expression of a variety of β-defensins in the postnatal epididymis of different species. A gradient of region- and cell-specific expression of these proteins is observed in the epithelium of the postnatal epididymis. Their secretion into the luminal fluid and binding to spermatozoa as they travel along the epididymis has suggested their involvement in reproduction-specific tasks. Therefore, continuous attention has been given to various β-defensins for their role in sperm function and fertility. Although β-defensins are largely dependent on androgens, the underlying mechanisms regulating their expression and function in the epididymis are not well understood. Recent investigation has pointed out to a new and interesting scenario where β-defensins emerge with a different expression pattern in the Wolffian duct, the embryonic precursor of the epididymis, as opposed to the adult epididymis, thereby redefining the concept concerning the multifunctional roles of β-defensins in the developing epididymis. In this review, we summarize some current views of β-defensins in the epididymis highlighting our most recent data and speculations on their role in the developing epididymis during the prenatal-to-postnatal transition, bringing attention to the many unanswered questions in this research area that may contribute to a better understanding of epididymal biology and male fertility.

A NEW BOUNDARY CONDITION FOR RATE-TYPE NON-NEWTONIAN DIFFUSIVE mODELS AND THE STABLE mAC SCHEmE

We present a new Dirichlet boundary condition for the rate-type non-Newtonian diffusive constitutive models. The newly proposed boundary condition is compared with two such well-known and popularly used boundary conditions as the pure Neumann condition and the Dirichlet condition by Sureshkumar and Beris. Our condition is demonstrated to be more stable and robust in a number of numerical test cases. A new Dirichlet boundary condition is implemented in the framework of the finite difference marker and Cell （mAC） method. In this paper, we also present an energy-stable finite difference mAC scheme that preserves the positivity for the conformation tensor and show how the addition of the diffusion helps the energy-stability in a finite difference mAC scheme-setting.

Detrital zircon U-Pb-He double dating: A method of quantifying long- and short-term exhumation rates in collisional orogens

A U-Pb-He double-dating method is applied to detrital zircons with core-rim structure from the Ganges River in order to de- termine average short and long-term exhumation rates for the Himalayas. Long-term rates are calculated from the U/Pb ages of metamorphic rims of the grains that formed during the Himalayan orogeny and their crystallization temperatures, which are calculated from the Ti-in-zircon thermometer. Short-term rates are calculated from （U-Th）/He ages of the grains with appro- priate closure temperatures. The results show that short-term rates for the Himalayas, which range from 0.70 ± 0.09 to 2.67 ± 0.40 km/myr and average 1.75 ± 0.59 （1δ） km/myr, are higher and more varied than the long-term rates, which range from 0.84 ±0.16 to 1.85 ± 0.35 km/myr and average 1.26 ±0.25 （let） km/myr. The differences between the long-term and short-term rates can be attributed to continuous exhumation of the host rocks in different mechanisms in continental collision orogen. The U/Pb ages of 44.0 ± 3.7 to 18.3 ±0.5 ma for the zircon rims indicate a protracted episode of -：25 myr for regional metamorphism of the host rocks at deeper crust, whereas the （U-Th）/He ages of 42.2 ± 1.8 to 1.3 ± 0.2 ma for the zircon grains represent a protracted period of -40 myr for exposure of the host rocks to shallower crustal level. In particular, the oldest （U-Th）/He ages of the zircon grains are close to the oldest U/Pb ages for the rims, indicating that some parcels of the rocks that contain zircons were rapidly exhumed from deep to shallow levels in the stage of collisional orogeny. On the other hand, some parcels of the rocks may have been carried upwards by thrust faults in the post-collisional stage. Effects of live yeast on differential genetic and functional attributes of rumen microbiota in beef cattle

Several studies have evaluated the effects of live yeast supplementation on rumen microbial population;however,its effect on differential microbial genes and their functional potential has not been described. Thus, this study applied shotgun metagenomic sequencing to evaluate the effects of live yeast supplementation on genetic and functional potential of the rumen microbiota in beef cattle. Eight rumen-cannulated Holstein steers were randomly assigned to two treatments in a cross-over design with two 25-day experimental periods and a 10-day wash-out between the two periods. The steers were housed in individual pens and fed 50% concentrate-mix and 50% red clover/orchard hay ad libitum. Treatments were(1) control(CON;basal diet without additive) and(2) yeast(YEA;basal diet plus 15 g/d of live yeast product). Rumen fluid samples were collected at 3, 6, and 9 h after feeding on the last d of each period. Sequencing was done on an Illumina Hi Seq 2500 platform. Dietary yeast supplementation increased the relative abundance of carbohydrate-fermenting bacteria(such as Ruminococcus albus, ***, R. bromii, and R. obeum) and lactate-utilizing bacteria(such as megasphaera elsdenii, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, and D. vulgaris). A total of 154 differentially abundant genes(DEGs) were obtained(false discovery rate mes(KEGG) annotation analysis of the DEGs revealed that 10 pathways, including amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, pantothenate and coenzyme A biosynthesis, glutathione metabolism, beta-alanine metabolism,polyketide sugar unit biosynthesis, protein export, ribosome, and bacterial secretory system, were enriched in steers fed YEA. Treating refractory depression in Parkinson’s disease:a meta-analysis of transcranial magnetic stimulation

Response of nephelometric turbidity to hydrodynamic particle size of fine suspended sediment

Changes in ecosystem carbon stocks in a grassland ash (Fraxinus excelsior) afforestation chronosequence in Ireland

Aims Government policy in Ireland is to increase the national forest cover from the current 10%to 18%of the total land area by *** represents a major land use change that is expected to impact on the national carbon(C)*** the C stocks of ecosystem bio-mass and soils of Irish grasslands and coniferous forests have been quantified,little work has been done to assess the impact of broad-leaf afforestation on C *** In this study,we sampled a chronosequence of ash(Fraxinus excel-sior)forests aged 12,20,27,40 and 47 years on brown earth soils.A grassland site,representative of the pre-afforestation land use,was sampled as a *** Findings Our results show that there was a significant decline(Pm)following afforestation from the grassland(90.2 mg C ha^(−1))to the 27-year-old forest(66.7 mg C ha^(−1)).Subsequently,the forest soils switched from being a C source to a C sink and began to sequester C to 71.3 mg C ha^(−1) at the 47-year-old *** found the amount of C stored in the above-and belowground biomass increased with age of the forest stands and offset the amount of C lost from the *** amount of C stored in the above-and belowground biomass increased on average by 1.83 mg C ha^(−1) year^(−1).The increased storage of C in the biomass led to an increase in the total ecosystem C,from 90.2 mg C ha^(−1) at the grassland site to 162.6 mg C ha^(−1) at the 47-year-old *** a national scale,projected rates of ash afforestation to the year 2020 may cause a loss of 290752 mg C from the soil compared to 2525936 mg C sequestered into the tree *** effects of harvesting and reforestation may further modify the development of ecosystem C stocks over an entire ash rotation.
