Heterotic patterns in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) using exotic germplasm for Chinese semi-winter hybrid breeding

Chinese semi-winter rapeseed,genetically differing from winter and spring rapeseed,has been considered to possess strong potential as parent in winter and spring rapeseed hybrid breeding programs. However,no detailed researches have been documented whether winter and spring rapeseed lines have potential for Chinese semiwinter rapeseed hybrid breeding. The objectives of this study are to estimate the potential of winter and spring rapeseed for semi-winter rapeseed hybrid breeding,and to investigate the association of general combining ability(GCA) with adaptation of parental lines by combining with the data in our previous studies. Four winter and four spring male sterile lines were crossed with 14 Chinese semi-winter rapeseed lines to develop 112 hybrids,which were evaluated together with their parents for seed yield under three environments in China. The exotic parental lines were not adapted to local environment as demonstrated by late flowering,low seed weight and poor seed yield per se. However,the hybrids,especially derived from winter rapeseed exhibited strong heterosis for seed yield,indicating that winter rapeseed germplasm has a great potential for rapeseed hybrid breeding in China. Our data suggested a strong association of GCA with their adaptation ability of parental lines,since high to middle correlations were found for local parental lines and low correlations for exotic parental lines under spring,winter and semi-winter eco-growth environments. The hybrid breeding program using exotic germplasm in rapeseed was discussed.

Background: Psychosocial factors attract interest in investigating the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. Design This study aimed to examine the impact of critical life events on the development of myocardial infarction in smokers and ex-smokers. We hypothesized that critical life events increase the risk of the disease. Methods: Data were taken from the Cologne Smoking Study (CoSmoS), a retrospective multicentre case-control study that examines which psychosocial factors may lead to a higher risk for smokers and ex-smokers of suffering from a myocardial infarction. Our sample consisted of n = 278 myocardial infarction participants and control participants. Both groups had a history of smoking. Logistic regression was used in the analysis. Results: The study results of the smoking and ex-smoking participants showed that sociodemographic data like gender and age have an effect on the development of myocardial infarction. Physical activity seems to offer protection aganist myocardial infarction. Final, the unexpected result that the experience of at least one critical life event seems to have a positive effect on health and so lowers the risk of myocardial infarction. Conclusions: Socio-demographic data and physical activity have an effect on the development of myocardial infarction. Participants with experience of critical life events appear to be strengthened after the events and possess adequate resources to protect their health.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs due to the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine *** affects from 5%to 10%of women of reproductive *** levels of matrix metalloproteinase(especially MMP-9)have been observed in women suffering from ***,the aim of this study was to investigate the naturally anti-inflammatory compounds available from an algal source that can target the MMP-9 by various in silico *** target 1L6J(Crystal structure of human matrix metalloproteinase MMP-9)structure was retrieved from the PDB *** compounds such as Eckol,Sargafuran,Vitamin E,Docosahexaenoic acid,Fucoidan and Elagolix were selected based on‘Lipinski’s rule of five’using the PubChem *** pharmacokinetics,ADMET properties and biological activity of these compounds were predicted computationally using databases such as PreADME,SWISS-ADME,pkCSM and *** analysis of the bioactive compounds with the target was performed by AutoDock *** LigPlot v.2.2,the target residues interacting with the compounds were visualised in a 2D *** on the results,Eckol exhibited the highest binding energy value of−7.82 kcal/mol,whereas the Elagolix(control drug)showed a binding energy of−4.88 *** conclude that Eckol can be a potent inhibitor of target MMP-9 with least side effects when compared to the control ***,this compound can be effectively explored by further in vitro and in vivo studies to develop more effective treatments for Endometriosis.

Comparison of high-resolution ultrasound and MR-enterography in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM:To compare the results of high-resolution ultrasound(HR-US) and magnetic resonance enterography(MRE) examinations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS:The reports of 250 consecutive cases with known IBD,who had an MRE and HR-US examination,were retrospectively *** a patient-based approach we evaluated morphological disease features such as affected bowel wall,stenosis,abscess and *** comparison between the two modalities was based on the hypothesis,that any pathological change described in any imaging modality was a true finding,as no further standard of reference was available for complete ***:Two hundred and fifty examinations representing 207 different patients were *** modalities assessed similar bowel wall changes in 65% of the examinations,with more US findings in 11% and more MRE findings in 15%.When the reports were analyzed with regard to "bowel wall inflammation",US reported more findings in 2%,while MRE reported more findings in 53%.Stenoses were assessed to be identical in 8%,while US found more in 3% and MRE in 29%(P < 0.01).For abscess detection,US showed more findings in 2%(n = 4) while MRE detected more in 6%(n = 16).US detected more fistulas in 1%(n = 2),while MRE detected more in 13%(n = 32)(P < 0.001).The most common reason for no detected pathology by US was a difficult to assess anatomical region(lesser pelvis,n = 72).CONCLUSION:US can miss clinically relevant pathological changes in patients with IBD mostly due to difficulty in assessing certain anatomical regions.

Extended central hepatectomy with preservation of segment 6 for patients with centrally located hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND： In order to preserve functional liver parenchyma, extended central hepatectomy （segments 4, 5, 7 and 8 resection） was proposed for the management of centrally located hepatocellular carcinoma invading the right and middle hepatic veins, reconstructing segment 6 outflow in the absence of the thick inferior right hepatic vein. The present study was to describe our surgical techniques of extended central ***： Between 2008 and 2012, 5 patients with centrally located hepatocellular carcinoma invading or in the vicinity of the right and middle hepatic veins underwent extended central hepatectomy. The thick inferior right hepatic vein was preserved during dissection. Gore-Tex graft was used for segment 6 outflow reconstruction in the absence of the thick inferior right hepatic ***： The mean future remnant liver volume for segments 2 and 3 was 28% versus 45% on segment 6 preservation. The mean tumor diameter was 7.4 cm. The thick inferior right hepatic vein was found in 1 patient. Outflow reconstruction from segment 6 was performed in 4 patients. Postoperative complications included bile leakage （1 patient）, pleural effusion （2） and liver failure （1）. The rate of graft patency was 75%. There was no perioperative ***： Extended central hepatectomy is a safe alternative for extended hepatic resection in selected patients attempting to preserve the functional liver parenchyma.

Mangroves Restoration and Observation in Kaohsiung Jhong-Dou Wetland

The ecosystems of Kaohsiung are rich and diverse. Examples of ecosystems include the tropical rainforest ecology, marine ecology of the coastal forests, and the estuary type ecology of mangrove forests. The Jhong-Dou Wetland Park is situated in the Jhong-Dou Redevelopment Zone, 2.5km from the Lover River Estuary. This area is defined by brackish aquatic environments--a mixture of fresh and salt water, and fulfills the criteria for mangrove restoration. It is expected that the current restoration project will recreate an epitome of the once-diverse, co-existing mangrove species of Kaohsiung＇s past, and improves upon the functions of environmental education. The initial mangrove species planned for restoration are the existing Kandelia obovata, Rhizophora stylosa, Avicennia marina and the Lumnitzera racemosa populations of the Kaohsiung area. These plants will be placed in experimental habitats that correspond to the unique micro-climates required for the growth of each species, and the mangrove-associated plants will also be restored concurrently in the terrestrial environments behind the mangrove forests. The process of restoration will be monitored by academia, as well as providing reference for subsequent mangrove environment restoration efforts. The main purpose of this research in these four mangrove species of this wetland park is to understand their adaptation to the rehabilitating environment, and be able to feedback these information to the design and maintenance team of the park. The research method is to observe and record their growing status, also execute a survey on the nearby mangrove habitation. The observation has started on December 1 st of 2010, and still has been continued carry on since then. From the research result, it shows that the A vicennia marina （Forsk.） Vierh. and Lumnitzera racemosa Willd. are the two species that had been well adapted to this wetland park. Breeding of apple is a long-term and costly process due to the time and space requirements for screening selection ***-assisted breeding utilizes genomic and phenotypic information to increase the selection efficiency in breeding programs,and measurements of phenotypes in different environments can facilitate the application of the approach under various climatic *** we present an apple reference population:the apple REFPOP,a large collection formed of 534 genotypes planted in six European countries,as a unique tool to accelerate apple *** population consisted of 269 accessions and 265 progeny from 27 parental combinations,representing the diversity in cultivated apple and current European breeding material,respectively.A high-density genome-wide dataset of 303,239 SNPs was produced as a combined output of two SNP arrays of different densities using marker imputation with an imputation accuracy of *** on the genotypic data,linkage disequilibrium was low and population structure was *** well-studied phenological traits of horticultural importance were *** found marker–trait associations in several previously identified genomic regions and maximum predictive abilities of 0.57 and 0.75 for floral emergence and harvest date,*** decreasing SNP density,the detection of significant marker–trait associations varied depending on trait *** of the trait,10,000 SNPs sufficed to maximize genomic prediction *** confirm the suitability of the apple REFPOP design for genomics-assisted breeding,especially for breeding programs using related germplasm,and emphasize the advantages of a coordinated and multinational effort for customizing apple breeding methods in the genomics era.

The GP130 cytokine receptor subunit encoded by IL6ST is the shared receptor for ten cytokines of the IL-6 family. We describe a homozygous non-synonymous variant in IL6 ST(p.R281 Q) in a patient with craniosynostosis and retained deciduous teeth. We characterize the impact of the variant on cytokine signaling in vitro using transfected cell lines as well as primary patient-derived cells and support these findings using a mouse model with the corresponding genome-edited variant Il6 st p.R279 Q. We show that human GP130 p.R281 Q is associated with selective loss of IL-11 signaling without affecting IL-6, IL-27, OSM, LIF, CT1, CLC, and CNTF signaling. In mice Il6 st p.R279 Q lowers litter size and causes facial synostosis and teeth abnormalities. The effect on IL-11 signaling caused by the GP130 variant shows incomplete penetrance but phenocopies aspects of IL11 RA deficiency in humans and mice. Our data show that a genetic variant in a pleiotropic cytokine receptor can have remarkably selective defects.
