Analysis of Cartilage Creep Recovery Using a Highly Dynamic Closed-loop Test System

The aim of this study was to analyze cartilage creep and creep recovery after static and cyclic loading. Up to now technical limitations have hindered the measurement of creep recovery. For this reason, we developed a closed loop micro creep and creep-recovery indentation test system with active force control. Bovine osteochondral explants were tested under static （110 kPa） and cyclic （100 cycles, 350 kPa/35 kPa, 1 Hz） loading conditions and subsequently creep recovery was measured. The cartilage thickness was determined using needle indentation. For static loading, the creep and creep-recovery rates were significantly different during the first 60 seconds （p 〈 0.05）. Cyclic loading was assessed for the medial and lateral patella and resulted in a physiological patellar cartilage strain of 7.7% ± 2.6% and 8.2% ± 2.7%, respectively. We recorded a creep recovery of 97.8% ±2.1% for the medial and 98.3% ± 2.4% for the lateral patella. The advantage of this study over earlier in vitro studies is that we recorded creep-recovery profiles with an actively controlled setup. This allowed us to analyze creep recovery immediately after removing the creep load, in contrast to MRI-based in vivo studies. In future, the presented method will enable us to quantify spatial variations within articular joints.

Rationality of quotients by linear actions of affine groups

In this paper we study the representation theory of G and in particular the question of rationality for V/G, where V is a generically free G-representation. We show that the answer to this question is positive (Theorem 6.1) if the dimension of V is sufficiently large and V is indecomposable. We explicitly characterize two-step extensions 0 → S → V → Q → 0, with completely reducible S and Q, whose rationality cannot be obtained by the methods presented here (Theorem 5.3).

The oxidative pentose-phosphate pathway （OPPP） represents a central branch of cellular metabolism emanating from glucose-6-phosphate （G6P） to provide reductive power （NADPH） and sugar phosphates for anabolic biosyntheses. In plant cells, the oxidative OPPP branch is found in the cytosol and in plastids, consisting of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase （G6PD）, 6-phosphogluconolactonase （PGL）, and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase （6PGD）. These enzymes are encoded by small gene families in the nuclear genome, which, in Arabidopsis, comprise six G6PD, five 6-PGL, and three 6-PGD isoforms （Kruger and von Schaewen, 2003）. Specific targeting motifs at the C-terminus of 6-PGL and 6-PGD isoforms suggested that the OPPP may also occur in peroxisomes （Reumann et al., 2004）.

The effects of artificial surface temperature on mechanical properties and player kinematics during landing and acceleration

Background: Artificial turf is considered a feasible global alternative to natural turf by many sports governing bodies. Consequently, its ability to provide a safe and consistent playing surface regardless of climate becomes essential. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of artificial surface temperature on:(1) mechanical properties of the turf and(2) the kinematics of a turf-sport related ***: Two identical artificial turf pitches were tested: one with a cold surface temperature(1.8°C–2.4°C) and one with a warm surface temperature(14.5°C–15.2°C). Mechanical testing was performed to measure the surface properties. Four amateur soccer players performed a hurdle jump to sprint acceleration movement, with data(contact time, step length and hip, knee and ankle kinematics) collected using CODASport(200 Hz).Results: The temperature difference had a significant influence on the mechanical properties of the artificial turf, including force absorption,energy restitution, rotational resistance, and the height where the head injury criterion was met. Both step length(p = 0.008) and contact time(p = 0.002) of the initial step after the landing were significantly longer on the warm surface. In addition, significant range of motion and joint angular velocity differences were ***: These findings highlight different demands placed on players due to the surface temperature and suggest a need for coaches,practitioners, and sports governing bodies to be aware of these differences.

Long-term results of an anatomically implanted hip arthroplasty with a short stem prosthesis (MiniHip^(TM))

AIM To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcome nineand ten years after short-stemmed, bone preserving and anatomical hip arthroplasty with the MiniHip^(TM) system. METHODS In a prospective study, 186 patients underwent hip arthroplasty with a partial neck preserving short stem(MiniHip^(TM), Corin). Elderly patients were not excluded from this study, thus the mean age at the time of surgery was 59.3 years(range 32 to 82 years). Surgery and the follow-up assessments were performed at two Centers. Up until now, the mean follow-up was 112.5 ± 8.2 mo. The Oxford Hip Score(OHS) and the Hip Dysfunction Osteoarthritis and Outcome Score(HOOS) was assessed pre-and each year after surgery. The clinical follow-up was accompanied by standardized a.p. and axial radiological examinations. Periprosthetic lucencies, hypertrophies within the Gruen zones one to fourteen were assessed. A subsidence of the stem was investigated according to Morray and heterotopic ossifications were assessed according to *** The OHS and HOOS improved from 18 ± 3.3 to 46 ± 2.0 and from 30 ± 8.3 to 95 ± 4.6 points, P 0.05). Two stems were revised due to a symptomatic subsidence four and twelve months postoperatively. Thus, the survivorship for aseptic loosening at nine to ten years was 98.66%. Including one stem revision due to a symptomatic exostosis, bursitis and thigh pain as well as one revision because of a septic stem loosening, the overall survival for the stem with revision for any reason was 97.32%. Besides one asymptomatic patient, radiological signs of a proximal stress-shielding, such as bone resorptions within the proximal Gruen zones, were not noticed. Findings suggesting a distal loading, e.g., bony hypertrophies or bone appositions of more than 2 mm, were also not detected. Metabolic activity of Streptococcus mutans biofilms and gene expression during exposure to xylitol and sucrose

The objective of the study was to analyse Streptococcus mutans biofilms grown under different dietary conditions by using multifaceted methodological approaches to gain deeper insight into the cariogenic impact of carbohydrates. S. mutans biofilms were generated during a period of 24 h in the following media： Schaedler broth as a control medium containing endogenous glucose, Schaedler broth with an additional 5% sucrose, and Schaedler broth supplemented with 1% xylitol. The confocal laser scanning microscopy（CLSM）-based analyses of the microbial vitality, respiratory activity（5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride, CTC） and production of extracellular polysaccharides（EPS） were performed separately in the inner, middle and outer biofilm layers. In addition to the microbiological sample testing, the glucose/sucrose consumption of the biofilm bacteria was quantified, and the expression of glucosyltransferases and other biofilm-associated genes was investigated. Xylitol exposure did not inhibit the viability of S. mutans biofilms, as monitored by the following experimental parameters： culture growth, vitality, CTC activity and EPS production. However,xylitol exposure caused a difference in gene expression compared to the control. Gtf C was upregulated only in the presence of *** xylitol exposure, gtf B was upregulated by a factor of 6, while under sucrose exposure, it was upregulated by a factor of *** with glucose and xylitol, sucrose increased cell vitality in all biofilm layers. In all nutrient media, the intrinsic glucose was almost completely consumed by the cells of the S. mutans biofilm within 24 h. After 24 h of biofilm formation, the multiparametric measurements showed that xylitol in the presence of glucose caused predominantly genotypic differences but did not induce metabolic differences compared to the control. Due to the recent system developments for the electromagnetic characterization of the subsurface, fast and easy acquisition is made feasible due to the fast measurement speed, easy coupling with GPS systems, and the availability of multi-channel electromagnetic induction（EMI） and ground penetrating radar（GPR） systems. Moreover, the increasing computer power enables the use of accurate forward modeling programs in advanced inversion algorithms where no approximations are used and the full information content of the measured data can be exploited. Here, recent developments of large-scale quantitative EMI inversion and full-waveform GPR inversion are discussed that yield higher resolution of quantitative medium properties compared to conventional approaches. In both cases a detailed forward model is used in the inversion procedure that is based on Maxwell＇s equations. The multi-channel EMI data that have different sensing depths for the different source-receiver offset are calibrated using a short electrical resistivity tomography（ERT） calibration line which makes it possible to invert for electrical conductivity changes with depth over large areas. The crosshole GPR full-waveform inversion yields significant higher resolution of the permittivity and conductivity images compared to ray-based inversion results.
