Pollution control structures may be adapted to enhance the removal of nutrients and pesticides from water. Charcoal-like material is known to sorb organic compounds in solution, including atrazine, a herbicide used to control broadleaf weeds, which persists in soils and can migrate from soils to water bodies, ultimately affecting water quality. The primary goal of this study was to investigate if activated charcoal cloths (single-weave, SW;double-weave, DW;and knitted, KT) are more efficient to remove atrazine from aqueous solutions than a cloth without activated charcoal (control) currently used in pollution control structures. The approach consisted of sorption kinetics, flow-through, and desorption/degradation experiments using 50 and 1000μg L-1 atrazine solutions. Results showed that within 30 min of contact time, the control sorbed from 22.6 to 36.1% of atrazine in solution;whereas the activated charcoal cloths sorbed from 76 to 99% of atrazine in solution (SW > KT > DW). The flow-through ex-periments showed that the SW sorbed 88.2, 76.1, and 52.2%of atrazine at the contact time of 0.75, 5, and 10 min, respectively. After 28 days of incubation, previously sorbed atrazine on the SW cloth did not degrade and <2.0% was desorbed. The results showed that activated charcoal cloths are a practical alternative for improving atrazine removal in water in pollution control structures.

To the Editor： In their meta-analysis, Ma et al. aimed to determine the association of mortality with hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 or 0.42 （HES） with HES dose and daily fluid balance in sepsis patients. Sensitivity tests were performed to analyze reasons for heterogeneity in mortality data. These tests focused on ＂risk of bias.＂

I use to say that in science, one cannot say what is right, but one can say what is wrong. And a model is, by definition, wrong, otherwise it is not a modet, it is the truth. Being aware that a model aims to mimic the truth but witl never be the truth, the onty worth questions asking to a model are：（1） How wrong are we？ And （2） Why are we wrong？ The tatter questions the foundations of the model, and is mainty the concerns of A. j. （Tom） van Loon＇s comments （2015, this issue）. The first questions the accuracy of the outcomes, and corresponds more to G. Shanmugam＇s comments （2015, this issue）. I am grad that our paper has aroused so rapidty as much feedbacks and comments, sometimes even before the manuscript is definitely pubtished. We hope this paper witl keep on inspiring various axes of research and opening new avenues in geosciences. Detaited answers to the comments raised by A. j. （Tom） van Loon and G. Shanmugam among others would certainty deserve a book, so my repty witl just focus herein around the two aforementioned questions.

Anti-inflammatory effects of bifidobacteria by inhibition of LPS-induced NF-κB activation

AIM： Different strains of bifidobacteria were analysed for their effects on HT-29 intestinal epithelial cells （IECs） in in vitro models both of the non-inflamed and inflamed intestinal epithelium. METHODS： A reporter gene system in HT-29 cells was used to measure levels of NF-KB activation after challenge with bifidobacteria or after bacterial pre-treatment following LPS challenge. IL-8 protein and pro-inflammatory gene expression was investigated using normal HT-29 cells. RESULTS： None of the bifidobacteria tested induced activation of nuclear factor κB （NF-κB） indicating that bifidobacteria themselves do not induce inflammatory events in IECs. However, six out of eight bifidobacteria tested inhibited lipopolysaccharide- （LPS-） induced NF-κB activation in a dose- and strain-dependent manner. In contrast, NF-κB activation in response to challenge with tumor necrosis factor-α （TNF-α） was affected by none of the tested bifidobacteria, indicating that the inhibitory effect of bifidobacteria is specific for LPS-induced inflammation in IECs. As shown with two of the six inhibitionpositive bifidobacteria, LPS-induced inhibition of NF-κB activation was accompanied by a dose-dependent decrease of interleukin 8 （IL-8） secretion and by lower mRNA levels for IL-8, TNF-α, cyclooxygenase 2 （Cox-2）, and intercellular adhesion molecule 1（ICAM-1）. CONCLUSION： Some strains of bifidobacteria are effective in inhibiting LPS-induced inflammation and thus might be appropriate candidates for probiotic intervention in chronic intestinal inflammation.

Multi-wavelength observations of the 2014 june 11 M3.9 flare: temporal and spatial characteristics

We present multi-wavelength observations of an M-class flare(M3.9) that occurred on 2014 june *** observations were conducted with the Dunn Solar Telescope(DST),employing adaptive optics,the multi-camera system Rapid Oscillations in Solar Atmosphere(ROSA),the new Hydrogen-Alpha Rapid Dynamics camera(HARDcam) in various wavelengths,such as Ca II K,Mg I b2(at 5172.7 A),and Hα narrow band and G-band continuum *** were re-constructed using the Kiepenheuer-Institut Speckle Interferometry Package(KISIP) code,to improve our image *** observed intensity increases of ≈120%–150% in the Mg,Ca K and Hα narrow band filters during the *** increases for the flare observed in the SDO EUV channels were several times larger,and the X-rays,as recorded by GOES,increased over a factor of 30 for the harder *** a modest delay was found between the onset of flare ribbons of a nearby sympathetic flare and the main flare ribbons observed in these narrow band *** peak flare emission occurred within a few seconds for the Ca K,Mg and Hα *** techniques indicate propagation velocities of ≈60 km s^-1 for the main flare ribbon and as high as300 km s^-1 for smaller regions,which we attribute to filament *** result and delays and velocities observed with SDO(≈100 km s^-1) for different coronal heights agree well with the simple model of energy propagation versus height,although a more detailed model for the flaring solar atmosphere is ***,we detected marginal quasi-periodic pulsations(QPPs) in the 40–60 s range for the Ca K,Mg and Hα bands,and such measurements are important for disentangling the detailed flare-physics.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate relative regional blood volume (rCBV) in meningioma and compare the utility of reconstruction using both gradient-echo sequence and echo-planar-imaging (EPI) *** patients with meningiomas were studied on a Siemens 1.5-T scanner. During the gradient-echo sequence (n=12) and EPI sequence (n=6), a bolus ^(0.2 mmol/kg) of Gd-DTPA was injected mechanically with a flow rate of 5 ml/second. Image processing of dynamic data was performed on a pixel-by-pixel basis. The ratio of tumor rCBV/gray matter rCBV was 3.01±1.18 (3.07 ± 1.39 in gradient sequence and 2.84 ± 0.94 in EPI sequence). The ratio of gray matter/ white matter as the reference tissue had a mean of 2.79 ± 0.76 using the FLASH sequence, and a mean of 3.04 ± 1.31 using EPI. These differences were not statistically signifcant (P>0.5, t-test). According to the ratio of tumor rCBV/gray matter rCBV, a mean value, 14.5 ml/100 g, of rCBV in meningiomas was calculated. Compared with gray matter, increased inhomogeneous rCBV was observed in meningioma. Based on the two different sequences, no bias can be observed in our rCBV reconstruction.

It is now recognized that nanoscale particulate matter(PM)represents a substantial health hazard for our society,including PM from restaurant *** this study,we explored the use of a transient pulsed plasma in conjunction with an applied DC bias to treat oil aerosols that closely resemble restaurant(i.e.,charbroiler)smoke *** polyaromatic olefin PAO-4 and soybean oil,we found that a three-order-of-magnitude reduction in particulates(i.e.,99.9%remediation)could be achieved with this ***,the plasma discharge was produced in a 4-in.-diameter cylindrical reactor with a 5-10 ns high voltage(30 kV)pulse generator together with applied DC bias voltages up to 10 *** distribution of nanoparticle sizes was measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer(SMPS)with diameter centered around 225 ***,the main mechanism of remediation occurs in a two-step process in which the oil nanoparticles are first ionized by the free electrons and free radicals in the plasma and then the charged particles are swept out to the sidewalls of the reactor by the applied DC *** believe this general approach opens up new degrees of freedom in the design of electrostatic oil aerosol pollution control devices.

Bistability theorem in a cancer model

In this paper, I continue the study of the mathematical models presented in [j. C. Larsen, Models of cancer growth, j. Appl. Math. Comput. 53（1-2）（2015） 613-645] and [j. C. Larsen, The bistability theorem in a model of metastatic cancer, to appear in Appl. Math.]. I shall prove the bistability theorem for the ODE model from [Larsen, 2015]. It is a mass action kinetic system in the variables C cancer, GF growth factor and GI growth inhibitor. This theorem says that for some values of the parameters, there exist two positive singular points c＊＋ = （C＊＋, GF＊., GI＊＋）, c＊2- = （C＊-, GF＊, GI＊-） of the vector field. Here C＊- 〈 C＊＋ and e. is stable and c＊＋ is unstable, see Sec. 2. There is also a discrete model in [Larsen, 2015], it is a linear map （T） on three-dimensional Euclidean vector space with variables （C, GF, GI）, where these variables have the same meaning as in the ODE model above. In [Larsen, 2015], I showed that one can sometimes find attine vector fields on three-dimensional Euclidean vector space whose time one map is T. I shall also show this in the present paper in a more general setting than in [Larsen, 2015]. This enables me to find an expression for the rate of change of cancer growth on the coordinate hyperplane C = 0 in Euclidean vector space. I also present an ODE model of cancer metastasis with variables C, CM, CF,GI, where C is primary cancer and CM is metastatic cancer and GF, GI are growth factors and growth inhibitors, respectively.
