Experimental and numerical investigation to elucidate the fluid flow through packed beds with structured particle packings

Adsorption of pharmaceutical pollutants on ZnCl_(2)-activated biochar from corn cob:Efficiency,selectivity and mechanism

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in water bodies and drinking water poses risks for the envi-ronment and human health,thus it is necessary to study methodologies that allow the efficient removal of these *** this work,corn cob-derived biochar was obtained by ZnCl_(2)-activation,and subsequent carbonization at 700℃.The effect of contact time,temperature,pH,and initial concentration on the adsorption capacity of acetaminophen(ACE)and amoxicillin(AMX)was determined through batch *** addition,the kinetics,isotherms,and ther-modynamics parameters were *** activated biochar exhibited a maximum adsorp-tion capacity of 332.08 mg/g for ACE and 175.86 mg/g for *** adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm of ACE corresponded to the pseudo-second order and langmuir model,***,pseudo-first-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm model were well-fitted to AMX *** ACE and AMX co-adsorption had a synergistic effect on AMX but an antagonistic effect on ACE removal,achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 193.51 and 184.58 mg/g,*** the other hand,fixed-bed column experiments showed that the adsorption capacity depends on the influent concentration,and the breakthrough curve fits the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson *** mechanism adsorption studies showed that surface inter-actions(hydrogen bonding formation and n-𝜋interactions)are the main driving forces for the adsorption process,and pore filling is the rate-limiting *** this way,the prepared biochar exhibits a high potential for the adsorption of pharmaceutical compounds from water.

Retrospective study of the incidence, risk factors, treatment outcomes of bacterial infections at uncommon sites in cirrhotic patients

BACKGROUND Bacterial infections(BI)negatively affect the natural course of *** most frequent BI are urinary tract infections(UTI),pneumonia,and spontaneousbacterial peritonitis(SBP).AIM To assess the relevance of bacterial infections beyond the commonly recognized types in patients with cirrhosis and to investigate their relationship with other clinical *** We retrospectively analyzed patients with cirrhosis and BI treated between 2015 and 2018 at our tertiary care *** were classified as typical and atypical,and clinical as well as laboratory parameters were compared between the two *** In a cohort of 488 patients with cirrhosis,we identified 225 typical BI(95 UTI,73 SBP,72 pulmonary infections)and 74 atypical BIs,predominantly cholangitis and soft tissue infections(21 each),followed by intra-abdominal BIs(n=9),cholecystitis(n=6),head/throat BIs(n=6),osteoarticular BIs(n=5),and endocarditis(n=3).We did not observe differences concerning age,sex,or etiology of cirrhosis in patients with typical vs atypical *** BIs were more common in patients with more advanced cirrhosis,as evidenced by Model of End Stage liver Disease(15.1±7.4 vs 12.9±5.1;P=0.005)and Child-Pugh scores(8.6±2.5 vs 8.0±2;P=0.05).CONClUSION Atypical BIs in cirrhosis patients exhibit a distinct spectrum and are associated with more advanced stages of the ***,the work-up of cirrhosis patients with suspected BI requires detailed work-up to elucidate whether typical BI can be identified.

Prospective cohort study on facial profile changes in infants with Robin sequence and healthy controls

Intermediate Hip Arthroplasty in Gabon: Blood loss and Risk Factor for Transfusion

Background: Hip arthroplasty is a surgery with a high risk of bleeding. The main objective of this study was to research risk factors for bleeding and transfusion in patients undergoing hip hemiarthroplasty in Gabon. Method: It was a retrospective, monocentric, descriptive and analytical study carried out from June 2011 to June 2021 at the Omar Bongo Ondimba army training hospital. The variables studied were demographic characteristics, biological variables, transfusion and intraoperative data. The primary outcome was intraoperative transfusion. A univariate and multivariate analysis was conducted to identify the factors associated with the occurrence of a transfusion. Results: Of the 97 patients included, the average age was 74.2 years ± 10, male predominance was 73.2%, the average ASA score was 1.9 ± 0.5, and transfusion incidence was 38.1%. The average number of RBCs transfused was 1.2 ± 0.6. Tranexamic acid was used in 11.3% of patients. The average bleeding was 450 ± 453 ml. Preoperative anemia was predictor of transfusion to be significant. Conclusion: The incidence of transfusion is law compared to total hip arthroplasty. The implementation of a patient blood management protocol is difficult given the urgency of bone repair. However, a better use of tranexamic acid could reduce this transfusion incidence.

Spinal cord injury remains a major cause of disability in young adults,and beyond acute decompression and rehabilitation,there are no pharmacological treatments to limit the progression of injury and optimize recovery in this *** the thorough investigation of the complement system in triggering and propagating cerebral neuroinflammation,a similar role for complement in spinal neuroinflammation is a focus of ongoing *** this work,we survey the current literature investigating the role of complement in spinal cord injury including the sources of complement proteins,triggers of complement activation,and role of effector functions in the *** study relevant data demonstrating the different triggers of complement activation after spinal cord injury including direct binding to cellular debris,and or activation via antibody binding to damage-associated molecular *** effector functions of complement have been implicated in spinal cord injury,and we critically evaluate recent studies on the dual role of complement anaphylatoxins in spinal cord injury while emphasizing the lack of pathophysiological understanding of the role of opsonins in spinal cord *** this pathophysiological review,we systematically review the different translational approaches used in preclinical models of spinal cord injury and discuss the challenges for future translation into human *** review emphasizes the need for future studies to dissect the roles of different complement pathways in the pathology of spinal cord injury,to evaluate the phases of involvement of opsonins and anaphylatoxins,and to study the role of complement in white matter degeneration and regeneration using translational strategies to supplement genetic models.
