Effect of biochar application on rice,wheat,and corn seedlings in hydroponic culture

In recent years,biochar has attracted considerable attention for soil quality improvement and carbon sequestration due to its unique physicochemical properties.However,the mechanism by which biochar application negatively affects the growth of crop seedlings has not been fully investigated.In this study,a hydroponic experiment was conducted to evaluate the response of rice,wheat,and corn seedlings to biochar application(CK,0 g/L;BC1,0.5 g/L;and BC2,1.0 g/L).Compared with the CK treatment,the BC1 and BC2 treatments decreased the fresh shoot and root weights of rice and corn seedlings(P0.05).For the contents of nutrient elements in seedlings,both BC1 and BC2 treatments hindered the roots from absorbing Fe and Cu and increased the uptake of Ca and Mn.Compared with the CK treatment,the translocation factor(TF)values of Ca,Mn,and Zn were significantly decreased especially in rice seedlings(35.3%-36.8%,68.7%-76.5%,and 29.8%-22.0%,respectively)under the BC1 and BC2 treatments,while only Mn was significantly decreased in wheat and corn seedlings(P<0.05).Transmission electron microscope(TEM)analysis of root cross-sections showed that nano-sized biochar particles(10~23 nm)were found in the root cells under BC2 treatment conditions.Our findings reveal that a large amount of biochar application can reduce nutrient absorption and translocation,and hinder rice,wheat,and corn seedlings,particularly rice seedling,in hydroponic system.

Deep Global Multiple-Scale and Local Patches Attention Dual-Branch Network for Pose-Invariant Facial Expression Recognition

Pose-invariant facial expression recognition(FER)is an active but challenging research topic in computer vision.Especially with the involvement of diverse observation angles,FER makes the training parameter models inconsistent from one view to another.This study develops a deep global multiple-scale and local patches attention(GMS-LPA)dual-branch network for pose-invariant FER to weaken the influence of pose variation and selfocclusion on recognition accuracy.In this research,the designed GMS-LPA network contains four main parts,i.e.,the feature extraction module,the global multiple-scale(GMS)module,the local patches attention(LPA)module,and the model-level fusion model.The feature extraction module is designed to extract and normalize texture information to the same size.The GMS model can extract deep global features with different receptive fields,releasing the sensitivity of deeper convolution layers to pose-variant and self-occlusion.The LPA module is built to force the network to focus on local salient features,which can lower the effect of pose variation and self-occlusion on recognition results.Subsequently,the extracted features are fused with a model-level strategy to improve recognition accuracy.Extensive experimentswere conducted on four public databases,and the recognition results demonstrated the feasibility and validity of the proposed methods.

Light-sheet fluorescence microscopy(LSFM)has been widely used to image the three-dimensional(3D)structures and functions of various millimeter-size bio-specimen such as zebrafish.However,the sample adsorption and scattering cause shading of the light-sheet illumination,preventing the even 3D image of thick samples.Herein,we report a continuous-rotational light-sheet microscope(CR-LSM)that enables simultaneous 3D bright-field and fluorescence imaging.With a high-accuracy rotational stage,CR-LSM records the outline projections and the fluorescent images of the sample at multiple rotation angles.Then,3D morphology and fluorescent structure were reconstructed with a developed algorithm.Using CR-LSM,zebrafish’s whole-fish contour and blood vessel structures were obtained simultaneously.

Despite the successful application of immune checkpoint therapy,no response or recurrence is typical in lung cancer.Cancer stem cells(CSCs)have been identified as a crucial player in immunotherapy-related resistance.Ferroptosis,a form of cell death driven by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation,is highly regulated by cellular metabolism remolding and has been shown to have synergistic effects when combined with immunotherapy.Metabolic adaption of CsCs drives tumor resistance,yet the mechanisms of their ferroptosis defense in tumor immune evasion remain elusive.Here,through metabolomics,transcriptomics,a lung epithelialspecific Cptla-knockout mouse model,and clinical analysis,we demonstrate that CPT1A,a key rate-limiting enzyme of fatty acid oxidation,acts with L-carnitine,derived from tumor-associated macrophages to drive ferroptosis-resistance and CD8^(+)T cells inactivation in lung cancer.Mechanistically,CPT1A restrains ubiquitination and degradation of c-Myc,while c-Myc transcriptionally activates CPT1A expression.The CPT1A/c-Myc positive feedback loop further enhances the cellular antioxidant capacity by activating the NRF2/GPX4 system and reduces the amount of phospholipid polyunsaturated fatty acids through ACSL4 downregulating,thereby suppressing ferroptosis in CSCs.Significantly,targeting CPT1A enhances immune checkpoint blockadeinduced anti-tumor immunity and tumoral ferroptosis in tumor-bearing mice.The results illustrate the potential of a mechanismguided therapeutic strategy by targeting a metabolic vulnerability in the ferroptosis of CsCs to improve the efficacy of lung cancer immunotherapy.

Dendrite-free Zn deposition initiated by nanoscale inorganic-organic coating-modified 3D host for stable Zn-ion battery

A 3D nanostructured scaffold as the host for zinc enables effective inhibition of anodic dendrite growth.However,the increased electrode/electrolyte interface area provided by using 3D matrices exacerbates the passivation and localized corrosion of the Zn anode,ultimately bringing about the degradation of the electrochemical performance.Herein,a nanoscale coating of inorganic-organic hybrid(α-In_(2)Se_(3)-Nafion)onto a flexible carbon nanotubes(CNTs)framework(ISNF@CNTs)is designed as a Zn plating/stripping scaffold to ensure uniform Zn nucleation,thus achieving a dendrite-free and durable Zn anode.The intro-duced inorganic-organic interfacial layer is dense and sturdy,which hinders the direct exposure of deposited Zn to electrolytes and mitigates the side reactions.Meanwhile,the zincophilic nature of ISNF can largely reduce the nucleation energy barrier and promote the ion-diffusion transportation.Consequently,the ISNF@CNTs@Zn electrode exhibits a low-voltage hysteresis and a superior cycling life(over 1500 h),with dendrite-free Zn-plating behaviors in a typical symmetrical cell test.Additionally,the superior feature of ISNF@CNTs@Zn anode is further demonstrated by Zn-MnO_(2)cells in both coin and flexible quasi-solid-state configurations.This work puts forward an inspired remedy for advanced Zn-ion batteries.

Water pollution caused by global population growth,urban expansion and industrialization development is one of the urgent issues that need to be addressed in the 21st century.Up to now,it was challenging for metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)to be used in the actual water treatment due to that the powder MOFs suffered from difficult reuse,poor water stability and easy corrosion.It is an effective strategy to immobilize MOFs powder onto porous sponge foam carriers for accomplishing large flux,facile recycling,easy processing water treatment setups.In this review article,the fabrication approaches and applications of different MOFs/sponge composites were highlighted,in which the fluorescence detection of pollutants,adsorption and separation of pollutants,catalytic reduction and oxidation of pollutants were included.Finally,the future challenges and opportunities of MOF/sponge for water treatment are proposed,aiming to provide in-depth guidance for the future design and manufacture of the immobilized MOFs onto sponge foams.

Prognostic relevance of ventricular arrhythmias in surgical patients with gastrointestinal tumors

BACKGROUND Individuals diagnosed with gastrointestinal tumors are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.Among which,ventricular arrhythmia is a prevalent clinical concern.This suggests that ventricular arrhythmias may have predictive value in the prognosis of patients with gastrointestinal tumors.AIM To explore the prognostic value of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with gastrointestinal tumors receiving surgery.METHODS We retrospectively analyzed data from 130 patients undergoing gastrointestinal tumor resection.These patients were evaluated by a 24-h ambulatory electrocardiogram(ECG)at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from January 2018 to June 2020.Additionally,41 general healthy age-matched and sexmatched controls were included.Patients were categorized into survival and non-survival groups.The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality,and secondary endpoints included major adverse cardiovascular events(MACEs).RESULTS Colorectal tumors comprised 90%of cases.Preoperative ambulatory ECG monitoring revealed that among the 130 patients with gastrointestinal tumors,100(76.92%)exhibited varying degrees of premature ventricular contractions(PVCs).Ten patients(7.69%)manifested non-sustained ventricular tachycardia(NSVT).The patients with gastrointestinal tumors exhibited higher PVCs compared to the healthy controls on both conventional ECG[27(21.3)vs 1(2.5),P=0.012]and 24-h ambulatory ECG[14(1.0,405)vs 1(0,6.5),P35/24 h to all-cause mortality,and NSVT was associated with MACE.However,neither PVC burden nor NSVT independently predicted outcomes according to multivariate analysis.CONCLUSION Patients with gastrointestinal tumors exhibited elevated PVCs.PVCs>35/24 h and NSVT detected by 24-h ambulatory ECG were prognostically significant but were not found to be ind

There has been increasing demand for high-energy density and longcycle life rechargeable batteries to satisfy the ever-growing requirements for nextgeneration energy storage systems.Among all available candidates,dual-ion batteries(DIBs)have drawn tremendous attention in the past few years from both academic and industrial battery communities because of their fascinating advantages of high working voltage,excellent safety,and environmental friendliness.However,the dynamic imbalance between the electrodes and the mismatch of traditional electrolyte systems remain elusive.To fully employ the advantages of DIBs,the overall optimization of anode materials,cathode materials,and compatible electrolyte systems is urgently needed.Here,we review the development history and the reaction mechanisms involved in DIBs.Afterward,the optimization strategies toward DIB materials and electrolytes are highlighted.In addition,their energy-related applications are also provided.Lastly,the research challenges and possible development directions of DIBs are outlined.

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in highly myopic eyes with implantable collamer lens

AIM:To investigate the clinical characteristics,treatment methods and outcomes of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD)in highly myopic eyes with implantable collamer lens(ICL).METHODS:High myopia patients who received treatment for nontraumatic RRD after ICL implantation surgery at the Retinal Department of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center from Jan 2018 to Dec 2022 were reviewed.Comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations including visual acuity measurement and digital fundus photography were performed in each patient.RESULTS:A total of nine RRD eyes from nine patients who received V4c-ICL implantation were included.The mean time from ICL implantation surgery to the diagnosis of RRD was 32.44±22.56mo(range,1-60mo).At the initial visit for RRD,giant retinal tear(GRT),horseshoe tear,simple round hole,and horseshoe tear combined with round hole were detected in 3,3,2,and 1 eye(s),respectively,with maculaoff in eyes.Eight patients received surgical treatment,and one patient was treated by retinal laser photocoagulation alone.The ICL was preserved in 7 eyes.At the last followup,the mean best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)improved significantly from 1.76±1.06 logMAR at presentation to 0.81±1.01 logMAR(P=0.035),and no case of recurrent retinal detachment was found.CONCLUSION:The morphological presentation of retinal breaks is diverse in this study.The ICL can be preserved in most cases during the course of retinal detachment repair surgery in our data,companied with acceptable visual and anatomical outcomes.
