Performance-based methodology for assessing seismic vulnerability and capacity of buildings

This paper presents a performance-based methodology for the assessment of seismic vulnerability and capacity of buildings. The vulnerability assessment methodology is based on the HAZUS methodology and the improved capacity- demand-diagram method. The spectral displacement (Sd) of performance points on a capacity curve is used to estimate the damage level of a building. The relationship between Sd and peak ground acceleration (PGA) is established, and then a new vulnerability function is expressed in terms of PGA. Furthermore, the expected value of the seismic capacity index (SCev) is provided to estimate the seismic capacity of buildings based on the probability distribution of damage levels and the corresponding seismic capacity index. The results indicate that the proposed vulnerability methodology is able to assess seismic damage of a large number of building stock directly and quickly following an earthquake. The SCev provides an effective index to measure the seismic capacity of buildings and illustrate the relationship between the seismic capacity of buildings and seismic action. The estimated result is compared with damage surveys of the cities of Dujiangyan and Jiangyou in the M8.0 Wenchuan earthquake, revealing that the methodology is acceptable for seismic risk assessment and decision making. The primary reasons for discrepancies between the estimated results and the damage surveys are discussed.

Experimental study on bed-load sediment transport under irregular wave and current combined flow

Using an irregularly oscillating tray and flume, a series of experiments are completed to evaluate bed-load sediment transport rate under irregular wave -current coexistent field. Testing conditions include three interaction angles 0', 45', 90' and two kinds of median sizes (0.38 and 1.10 mm). The results of transport rate show that the net sediment transport rate can be expressed approximately as the function of the maximum bottom shear stress of waves, mean shear stress of current and the grain size.

A self-designed restrained ring test was applied to investigate cracking of *** cracking total weigh W and cracking control rate K were applied to evaluate anti-cracking performance of *** the above method,the influence of polymer on the shrinkage and anti-cracking performance was *** microstructures of mortar specimens were investigated by means of *** results indicated that the addition of polymer can efficiently reduce the shrinkage of mortar and improve the anti-cracking performance of mortar.

Some problems concerning the ice forces and ice response spectra are studied from both theoretical and practical points of view. On the basis of structural analysis,the analysis method of ice response spectra is proposed, since it plays an important role in the prediction of maximum structural response in cold regions. And it is illustrated that it is easy to study the structural response to ice using the ice response spectra.

Mechanism of local scour around submarine pipelines based on numerical simulation of turbulence model

The mechanism of local scour around submarine pipelines is studied numerically based on a renormalized group (RNG) turbulence model. To validate the numerical model, the equilibrium profiles of local scour for two cases are simulated and compared with the experimental data. It shows that the RNG turbulence model can give an appropriate prediction for the configuration of equilibrium scour hole, and it is applicable to this situation. The local scour mechanism around submarine pipelines including the flow structure, shear stress distribution and pressure field is then analyzed and compared with experiments. For further comparison and validation, especially for the flow structure, a numerical calculation employing the large eddy simulation (LES) is also conducted. The numerical results of RNG demonstrate that the critical factor governing the equilibrium profile is the seabed shear stress distribution in the case of bed load sediment transport, and the two-equation RNG turbulence model coupled with the law of wall is capable of giving a satisfying estimation for the bed shear stress. Moreover, the piping phenomena due to the great difference of pressure between the upstream and downstream parts of pipelines and the vortex structure around submarine pipelines are also simulated successfully, which are believed to be the important factor that lead to the onset of local scour.

Forecast Method of Multimode System for Debris Flow Risk Assessment in Qingping Town,Sichuan Province,china

The Wenchuan Earthquake of May 12,2008 triggered large numbers of *** heavy rain on 13 August 2010 triggered debris flows with total volume of more than 6 million cubic meters and the debris flows destroyed 500 houses and infrastructure built after the Wenchuan *** study area Qingping Town was located in the northwestern part of the Sichuan Basin of china,which needs the second reconstructions and the critical evaluation of debris *** study takes basin as the study unit and defines collapse,landslide and debris flow hazard as a geo-hazard system.A multimode system composed of principal series system and secondary parallel system were established to evaluate the hazard grade of debris flow in 138 drainage basins of Qingping *** evaluation result shows that 30.43% of study basins(42 basins) and 24.58% of study area,are in extremely high or high hazard grades,and both percentage of basin quantity and percentage of area in different hazard grades decrease with the increase of hazard *** to the geo-hazard data from the interpretation of unmanned plane image with a 0.5-m resolution and field investigation after the Wenchuan Earthquake and 8.13 Big Debris Flow,the ratio of landslides and collapses increased after the Wenchuan Earthquake and the ratios of extremely high or high hazard grades were more than moderate or low hazard grades obviously.23 geo-hazards after8.13 Big Debris Flow in Qingping town region all occurred in basins with extremely high or high hazard grades,and 9 debris flows were in basins with extremely high hazard *** model of multimode system for critical evaluation could forecast not only the collapse and landslide but also the debris flow precisely when the basin was taken as the study unit.

CO curing of concrete seems a very efficient process in both absorbing CO and producing quality concrete *** results indicated that a dry pre-conditioning before CO curing was very critical for concrete specimens to achieve desirable strength or degree of CO curing,the strength of concrete mixtures for block manufacture after CO curing was close to that after conventional steam *** specimen pre-conditioned in a moist environment hydrated more than those pre-conditioned in the dry environment during the pre-conditioning ***,much less CaCO formed in the former than that in the latter after the CO ***,the CO curing is mainly contributed by the reactions between CO gas and cement clink minerals.

In many cases,service life of reinforced concrete structures is severely limited by chloride penetration until the steel ***,concrete with high resistance with respect to chloride penetration can be produced by internal hydrophobic *** aim of this study was to fill this gap in regards to reinforced concrete structures inserted in a marine *** indicated the efficacy of the hydrophobic agents in cases where capillary suction is the mechanism of water ***,when the transport mechanism is permeability this product is not ***,it was demonstrated that the chloride diffusion coefficient is reduced by the hydrophobic agents,and the corrosion rate of reinforcement could be well protected in the treated concrete with hydrophobic agents of *** durability of reinforced structures can be considerably increased and can be accurately designed by the application of an appropriate and optimized protective layer.

Considering that the damage of civil structures usually occurs at local areas and the fractal dimension can insight the local irregularity in geometry of an object, a damage detection approach based on Katz’s estimation of fractal dimension （FD） measure for beam structures is proposed in this study. The angle of rotation of the curve over the entire sliding window is first expressed by FD. An FD-based index for damage localization （FDIDL） is further proposed using the difference of the angle of rotation between two successive points. The relationship between the angle of rotation and the modal strain energy is established and then an FD-based index for estimation of damage extent is presented, which can predict the damage extent. Numerical studies are carried out using a simple supported beam. The results indicate that distinct fluctuations on FDIDL curve just appear at damage locations. Therefore, the FDIDL can localize the damage regardless of single damage location or multi-damage locations. Furthermore, the results for estimation of damage extent indicate that the proposed FD-based damage index for estimation of damage exten（tFDIEDE）can quantify damage extent without realizing the accurate damage length.

Rock masses without pre-existing macrocracks can usually be considered as granular materials with only *** the excavation of the tunnels,microcracks may nucleate,grow and propagate through the rock matrix;secondary microcracks may appear,and discontinuous and incompatible deformation of rock masses may *** classical continuum elastoplastic theory is not suitable for analyzing discontinuous and incompatible deformation of rock *** on non-Euclidean model of the discontinuous and incompatible deformation of rock masses,the distribution of stresses in the surrounding rock masses in deep tunnels is fluctuant or *** stress concentration at the tips of microcracks located in vicinity of stress wave crest is comparatively large,which may lead to the unstable growth and coalescence of secondary microcracks,and consequently the occurrence of fractured *** the other hand,the stress concentration at the tips of microcracks located around stress wave trough is relatively small,which may lead to the arrest of microcracks,and thus the non-fractured *** alternate appearance of stress wave crest and trough thus may induce the alternate occurrence of fractured and non-fractured zones in deep rock *** brittle rocks,the dissipated energy of microcrack growth is small,but the elastic strain energy stored in rock masses may be larger than the dissipated energy growths of pre-existing microcracks and secondary *** sudden release of the residual elastic strain energy may lead to *** on this understanding,the criteria of rockburst are ***,the relationship between rockbursts and zonal disintegration in the surrounding rock masses around deep tunnels is *** influences of the in-situ stresses and the physico-mechanical parameters on the distribution of rockburst zones and the ejection velocity of rock fragments are investigated in detail.
