Food safety is one of the major concerns in every country regardless of the economic and social development. The frequent occurrence of food scandals in the world has led the chinese government to implement several strategies to fortify the food supply system to a high food safety standard. This relies heavily on laboratory testing services but conventional methods for detection of food contaminants and toxicants are limited by sophisticated sample preparation procedures, long analysis time, large instruments and professional personnel to meet the increasing demands. In this review, we have incorporated most of the current and potential rapid detection methods for many notorious food contaminants and toxicants including microbial agents, toxic ions, pesticides, veterinary drugs and preservatives, as well as detection of genetically modified food genes and adulterated edible oil. Development of rapid, accurate, easy-to-use and affordable testing methods could urge food handlers and the public to actively screen for food contaminants and toxicants instead of passively relying on monitoring by the government examination facility. This review also provides several recommendations including how to encourage the public to engage in the food safety management system and provide optimal education and financial assistance that may improve the current chinese food safety control system.

AIM: To assess the clinical characteristics of Helicobacterpylori(H pylori) negative duodenal ***: Patients with an endoscopic diagnosis of duodenal ulcer between 1996 and 2002 were included in the present study. Patients were considered to be negative for Hpylori, if both histological examination and rapid urease test of biopsy specimens were negative. A comparison was made between patients with H pyloripositive and negative duodenal ***: A total of 1 343 patients were studied. Their mean age was 54.7±0.5 years. There was a male preponderance (M:F = 2.5:1). Three hundred and ninetyeight patients (29.6%) did not have H pylori infection. The annual proportion of patients with H pylori negative duodenal ulcers increased progressively from 1996 to2002. On multivariate analysis, patients with H pylorinegative duodenal ulcer were more likely to be older, have concomitant medical problem, pre-existing malignancy, recent surgery, underlying sepsis, or taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In terms of clinical presentations, patients with H pylori negative duodenal ulcer were more likely to present with bleeding, multiple ulcers and larger ***: The proportion of patients with H pylori negative duodenal ulcers is on the rise because of a continued drop in incidence of H pylori positive duodenalulcers in recent years. Such patients have distinct clinical characteristics and it is important to ascertain the H pylori status before starting eradication therapy.

In recent years,the pharmacological benefits of herbal extracts have been revisited for their potential neuroprotective effects in *** polysaccharides extracted from the fruits of Lycium barbarum L.,or Lycium barbarum polysaccharides,exert their anti-aging effect through reducing oxidative stress,modulating the immune response,enhancing neuronal responses,and promoting *** therapeutic efficacy of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in preserving retinal ganglion cells and their functions was demonstrated in a range of experimental models of optic *** include the acute and chronic ocular hypertension models,the partial optic nerve transection model,and the ischemic-reperfusion injuries *** on these findings,Lycium barbarum polysaccharides appear to be a good candidate to be developed as a neuroprotective agent for treating multifactorial *** review aims to present a comprehensive review on the latest preclinical evidence on the pre-and post-treatment benefits of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in retinal ganglion cell *** possible mechanisms of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides mediating retinal ganglion cell neuroprotection will also be ***,the potential research gaps in the effective translation of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides treatment into clinical glaucoma management will be discussed.

Revisiting the Climatology of Atmospheric Blocking in the Northern Hemisphere

In addition to the occurrence of atmospheric blocking, the climatology of the characteristics of blocking events, including duration, intensity, and extension, in four seasons over the Northern Hemisphere was analyzed for the period 1950-2009. The seasonality and spatial variations of these characteristics were studied according to their longitudinal distributions. In general, there were sharp discrepancies in the blocking characteristics between winter and summer, and these differences were more prominent over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The blocking not only occurred more frequently but also underwent stronger amplification in winter; likewise, the blocking occurred less frequently and underwent weaker amplification in summer. There are very strong interrelationships among different blocking characteristics, suggesting that they are supported by similar physical factors. In addition, the relationship between blocking over different regions and East Asian circulation was examined. Ural-Siberia is a major blocking formation region in all seasons that may exert a downstream impact on East Asia. The impact is generally weak in summer, which is due to its lower intensity and smaller duration. however, the extratropical circulation over East Asia in summer can be disturbed persistently by the frequent occurrence of blocking over the Asian continent or the Western Pacific. In particular, the blocking frequency over the Western Pacific significantly increased during the study period. This climatological information provides a background for studying the impact of blocking on East Asian circulation under both present and future climate conditions.

AIM: To investigate oxaliplatin-induced severe anaphylactic reactions (SAR) in metastatic colorectal cancer in a retrospective case series analysis and to conduct a systemic literature review. METhoDS: During a 6-year period from 2006 to 2011 at Kaohsiung Veterans General hospital, a total of 412 patients exposed to oxaliplatin-related chemotherapy were retrospectively reviewed. Relevant Englishlanguage studies regarding life-threatening SAR following oxaliplatin were also reviewed in MEDLINE and PubMed search. RESULTS: Eight patients (1.9%, 8 of 412 cases) were identified. Seven patients were successful resuscitated without any sequelae and one patient expired. We changed the chemotherapy regimen in five patients and rechallenged oxaliplatin use in patient 3. Twenty-three relevant English-language studies with 66 patients were reported. Patients received a median of 10 cycles of oxaliplatin (range, 2 to 29). Most common symptoms were respiratory distress (60%), fever (55%), and hypotension (54%). Three fatal events were reported (4.5%). Eleven patients (16%) of the 66 cases were rechallenged by oxaliplatin. CONCLUSION: SAR must be considered in patients receiving oxaliplatin-related chemotherapy, especially in heavily pretreated patients. Further studies on the mechanism, predictors, preventive methods and management of oxaliplatin-related SAR are recommended.

A 10-year-old chinese boy who had a history of congenital thrombocytopathy presented with severe iron deficiency anemia secondary to chronic gastric inflammation and duodenal ulcerations. Subtle oculocutaneous albinism led to the finding of diminished dense bodies in the platelets under electron microscopy, hence the diagnosis of Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS). Biopsies from the stomach and duodenum revealed a lymphocytic infiltration in the submucosa, but H pylori infection was absent. The gastroduodenitis responded to the treatment with omeprazole while iron deficiency anemia was corrected by oral iron therapy. HPS is a rare cause of congenital bleeding disorder with multisystemic manifestations. Upper gastrointestinal involvement is rare and should be distinguished from a mere manifestation of the bleeding diathesis.

Supercapacitors have been recognized as one of the promising energy storage devices in the future energy *** this perspective,rapid progress is made in the development of fundamental and applied aspects of *** techniques have been developed specifically to estimate the specific *** efforts have been made in the literature to increase the specific capacitance of electrode ***,researchers pay more attention on designing supercapacitors of asymmetric type with extending cell voltage and dissimilar materials with complementary working *** try to increase the specific energy of asymmetric supercapacitors(ASCs).Conversely,it is still a challenge to find a suitable operation conditions for ASCs in various designs,especially for the one with battery type *** this review,we describe our recent research works and other reports on the preparation of various nanostructured electrode materials and the performances of both symmetric and asymmetric ***,we demonstrate effects of charge balance on the capacitive performances of ASCs which consist of one electrode material of the battery type and one capacitive *** also demonstrate how to evaluate the charge capacities of both positive and negative electrode materials for this ASC application.

In 2021,there are approximately 537 million adults ageing 20-79 years affected by diabetes worldwide and the number is rising rapidly,hence it is important to manage and control diabetes mellitus and its associated *** is one of the key factors in preventing and combating diseases such as *** as a food and an herbal medicine,Polygonum multiflorum(PM)has been used as an anti-aging tonic,for hair darkening in traditional chinese medicine for several *** recent research effort of PM has been focused on antioxidant,anti-ageing and anti-tumor *** the present study,we utilized the traditional processing of harvested raw PM,and identified several stilbene components and then evaluated the potential anti-diabetic effects of the processed PM extract(PME).PME(0.075%)was given to diabetic mice(KK CgAy/J)in drinking water and after 7 weeks,PME-treated mice had significantly lower glucose levels than mice in the diabetic control group(P<0.01).The mechanism was explored with ELISA and Western blotting and results suggested that the effect was through maintainingβ-cell function.

Myriad evidence attests to the health-promoting benefits of tea *** there are multiple factors of tea influencing the effective biological properties,tea polyphenols are the most significant and valuable *** chemical characterization and physical characteristics of tea polyphenols have been comprehensively studied over the previous *** the emergence of new chemistry in tea,particularly the property of scavenging reactive carbonyl species(RCS)and the newly discovered flavoalkaloid compounds,has drawn increasing *** this review,we summarize recent findings of a new class of compounds in tea-flavonoid alkaloids(flavoalkaloids),which exist in fresh tea leaves and can be generated during the process of post-harvesting,and also postulate the formation mechanism of flavoalkaloids between catechins and theanine-derived Strecker ***,we detail the up-to-date research results of tea polyphenols regarding their ability to trap RCS and their in vivo aminated metabolites to suppress advanced glycation ends products(AGEs).We further raise questions to be addressed in the near future,including the synthetic pathways for the generation of flavoalkaloids and AGEs in fresh tea leaves before processing and the concentrations of tea polyphenols that affect their RCS scavenging capability due to their pro-oxidant *** intensive research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms of action underlying the biological activity of flavoalkaloids and the pharmacological application of tea polyphenols in scavenging RCS and impeding detrimental AGEs.
