Parkinson's disease(PD)affects gait and postural *** chi(TC)is recommended for PD for management of the condition,however biomechanical understanding to its effects on gait and postural stability is *** study aimed to examine the effects of an online 12-week biomechanical-based TC intervention on gait and posture in people with *** individuals in early-stage PD were recruited(Hoehn&Yahr stages 1-2).The TC intervention program was 60min session,three times weekly for 12 *** pre-and post-intervention test in obstacle crossing,timed-up-and-go(TUG)test,and single leg standing(SLS)with eyes open(EO)and closed(EC)were *** speed,crossing stride length,clearance height of the heel and toe,anterior-posterior(AP)and medial-lateral(ML)displacement and velocity of the center of mass(COM)and separation of the COM-center of pressure(COP)were *** participants significantly improved their ***-TC intervention performance on TUG test(p=0.002).During obstacle crossing,the participants significantly increased crossing stride length of the trailing foot,increased AP COM displacement and decreased ML COM-COP separation(p<0.05);the maximal dorsiflexion angle of the leading limb significantly increased and maximal plantarflexion angle of the trailing limb significantly decreased(p<0.05).A 12-week biomechanical-based online TC training was effective towards improvement of gait and postural stability among people in the early-stage of *** TC program and online training could be applied for management of PD.

This study examined the maximum joint angles and moments,and electromyography(EMG)activity of the lower limbs in an experienced Tai chi(TC)practitioner in performing four dynamic(Repulse Monkey,Wave-hand in Clouds,Brush Knee Twist Step,and Lateral Forward Step)and three static TC movements(Starting Form,Hero Touch Sky,and Push Hand Back)and compared them with the measures from *** EMG(iEMG)and peak EMG of the rectus femoris,adductor longus,tibialis anterior,semitendinosus,erector spinae,gluteus medius,tensor fasciae latae,medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscles were ***-way analysis of variance showed that compared with walking,TC presented 1)significantly larger hip flexion(71.4°vs.42.2°)and abduction angles(11.9°vs.5.3°),smaller knee flexion(45.2°vs.71.1°)and abduction angles(13.0°vs.27.7°),larger ankle dorsiflexion(41.4°vs.11.3°)and abduction angles(8.8°vs.7.2°);2)hip flexion moment and knee flexion and abduction moment were significantly *** dorsiflexion moment were significantly smaller,whereas ankle abduction moment was significantly larger in two TC movements;and 3)the EMG activity of the muscles in TC varied from 10%to 610%of *** knee extensors,hip adductors and abductors had significantly higher peak EMG(430%±40%,240%±30%,and 320%±90%)and iEMG values(610%±30%,311%±30%,and 1.4%±20%),*** findings suggested that these TC movements could be a good option for the improvement of muscle strength and range of motion of the lower limbs.

Effect of Initiation of Basal Insulin Glargine on Glycemic Control in Patients with Diabetes: Real Life Experience from Hong Kong

Introduction: To assess the changes in glycemic control after initiating or switching to a basal insulin analogue in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A retrospective, observational analysis was conducted using electronic data from a Hong Kong regional hospital. Data from adult patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM, respectively) who had been prescribed with basal insulin glargine in 2008-2010, with recorded HbA1c levels at the time of initiation, at 6 and 12 months thereafter, were analysed. Results: Data from 106 eligible patients were analysed. Substantial reduction in HbA1c and fasting sugar levels were reported in both T1DM (Δ HbA1c = 1.5%, Δ FBG = 1.3 mmol/L p chieved HbA1c levels chieved a statistically greater HbA1c reduction (Δ = 1.7%) than those who previous treated with premixed or basal bolus insulin (Δ = 0.3%) (p < 0.05). Percentage of patients experiencing hypoglycaemia reduced from 69% to 62% in T1DM but increased from 26% to 36% in T2DM patients. All hypoglycaemic episodes recorded were either asymptomatic or mild and self-limiting. Only 4% of the patients discontinued treatment at the end of 12 months. Conclusions: In real life clinical practice, a single daily basal insulin analogue therapy provided effective glycemic control with an acceptable risk of mild hypoglycaemia.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a recorded 1-m bidirectional 20.231-Gbit/s tricolor R/G/B laser diode(LD) based visible-light communication(VLC) system supporting signal remodulation. In the signal remodulation system, an LD source is not needed at the client side. The client reuses the downstream signal sent from the central office(CO) and remodulates it to produce the upstream signal. As the LD sources are located at the CO, the laser wavelength and temperature managements at the cost-sensitive client side are not *** is the first demonstration, to our knowledge, of a >20 Gbit∕s data rate tricolor R/G/B VLC signal transmission supporting upstream remodulation.

Circadian disruption is a risk factor for metabolic, psychiatric and age-related disorders, and non-human primate models could help to develop therapeutic treatments. Here, we report the generation of BMAL1 knockout cynomolgus monkeys for circadian-related disorders by CRISPR/Cas9 editing of monkey embryos. These monkeys showed higher nocturnal locomotion and reduced sleep, which was further exacerbated by a constant light regimen. Physiological circadian disruption was reflected by the markedly dampened and arrhythmic blood hormonal levels. Furthermore, BMAL1-deficient monkeys exhibited anxiety and depression, consistent with their stably elevated blood cortisol, and defective sensory processing in auditory oddball tests found in schizophrenia patients. Ablation of BMAL1 up-regulated transcriptional programs toward inflammatory and stress responses, with transcription networks associated with human sleep deprivation, major depressive disorders, and aging. Thus, BMAL1 knockout monkeys are potentially useful for studying the physiological consequences of circadian disturbance, and for developing therapies for circadian and psychiatric disorders.

AIM： To evaluate blood pressure（BP） changes during phacoemulsification（PC） and femtosecond laser（FSL）-assisted cataract ***： A retrospective chart review was performed for all patients who received traditional phacoemulsification surgery（PC group） and FSL-assisted cataract surgery（FS group） from July 2013 to December 2014. Totally 206 eyes from 133 patients receiving the two types of procedures were *** characteristics（age, gender, and hypertension history）, pre- and post-operative BPs were ***： The pro-operative systolic and diastolic BPs（mm Hg） were 124.89 ±20.48 vs 126.98 ±16.85, and71.88 ±9.81 vs 73.56 ±10.03, in PC and FS groups,respectively. While the post-operative systolic and diastolic BPs（mm Hg） were 130.13 ±22.59 vs 134.77 ±17.52, and 73.41 ±11.62 vs 78.89 ±12.2, in PC and FS groups, respectively. Paired-sample t-tests showed obvious systolic and diastolic BP elevations in FS group after surgery（P =0.001 and 0.007） and no reliability in PC group（P =0.094 and 0.359）. A linear regression model revealed systolic and diastolic BP elevations,which were related to longer surgical times for FS group（P =0.008 and 0.021）. Age, gender, and hypertension history were not correlated with blood pressure elevation in either ***： BP increases but at a limited level after FSL-assisted cataract surgery compared to traditional phacoemulsification

This study presents a silicon-based pressure sensor with temperature compensation. The eight piezoresistors were designed on the polycrystalline silicon membrane and constructed by two concentric Wheatstone-bridge circuits to perform two sets of sensors. The sensor in the central circuit measures the membrane deflection caused by the combined effects of pressure and temperature, while the outer one measures only the deflection caused by the working temperature. From this arrangement, it is reliable and accurate to measure the pressure by comparing the output signals from the two concentric Wheatstone-bridge circuits. The optimal positions of the eight piezoresistors were simulated by simulation software ANSYS. The investigated pressure sensor was fabricated by the micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) techniques. The measuring performance and an indication of the conventional single Wheatstone-bridge pressure sensor is easily affected under variation of different working temperature and causes a maximum absolute error up to 45.5%, while the double Wheatstone-bridge pressure sensor is able to compensate the error, and reduces it down to 1.13%. The results in this paper demonstrate an effective temperature compensation performance, and have a great performance and stability in the pressure measuring system as well.

Influence of Micronized chitosan on Antioxidative Activities in Grape Juice

The antioxidant activity of chitosan before micronization (BMC, average particle size of 1850 ± 26.3 μm) and after micronization (AMC, average particle size of 1.37 ± 0.2 μm) in grape juice was studied. Antioxidant activity was determined, including that of DPPH radicals, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion radicals, as well as ABTS radicals of BMC or AMC in grape juice. AMC exhibits stronger scavenging activity toward DPPH radicals, superoxide anion radicals and hydrogen peroxide than BMC. At a concentration of 1.0 mg/mL, AMC in grape juice exhibited 90.0%, 97.3% and 88.7% scavenging activities toward DPPH radicals, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion radicals, respectively. The TEAC (Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity) values of AMC (3.94 ± 0.19) greatly exceeded those of BMC (2.21 ± 0.10) in grape juice. The in vitro results in this investigation suggest the possibility that AMC can increase the antioxidant activity in grape juice. However, comprehensive studies must be performed to ascertain the in vivo safety of AMC in experimental animal models.
