A plant is stabilized by its root system. In congested urban cities such as Hong Kong, ground trenching is frequently seen due to the installation of utility lines along the roadside. Soil nailing, which involves soil coring in slopes, is a common solution to improve the slope stability. However, both activities inevitably pose a risk to the integrity of any root sys- tems present, and thus reduce the root anchorage. To prevent or minimize such damage, a careful design of the excava- tion/drilling location is of prime importance. Ground penetrating radar （GPR） provides a non-destructive method for locating roots by examining the contrast between the dielectric properties of the roots and the surrounding soil. To examine the perfor- mance of GPR and promote its use in Hong Kong, a test bed was prepared using local materials to create a controlled envi- ronment in which to conduct a series of systematic tests evaluating the performance of a 900 MHz GPR. The reflected radar- grams were subject to the influence of the following factors： size and depth of roots, horizontal distance between roots, and contrast between the root and soil water content. Correlations between root size and a number of waveform parameters were also explored. Limiting values for root size, root embedded depth, horizontal separation distance between roots, and water content contrast between root and soil were obtained. A significant correlation was found between the root diameter and time travel parameter T2 （p〈0.001, t=0.795）. Because GPR root detection is highly site-specific, this study provides a local refer- ence for GPR performance in the Hong Kong environment. The findings demonstrate that the 900 MHz GPR is applicable in Hong Kong for the detection of main roots.

This paper presents a corrosion assessment of copper spent nuclear fuel disposal canisters in crystalline rock,using hydrogeological modeling.A simplified approach is considered,to avoid complex and time-consuming computer *** simplified case is presented as a base case,with changes in the hydrogeological parameters presented as variant *** results show that in Taiwan’s base case,decreasing the hydraulic conductivity of the rock or decreasing the hydraulic conductivity of dikes results in a shorter transport path for sulfide and an increase in corrosion ***,the estimated canister failure time is still over one million years in the variant cases.

The design of iterative learning controller(ILC) requires to store the system input, output or control parameters of previous trials for generating the input of the current trial. In order to apply the iterative learning controller for a real application and reduce the memory size for implementation, a current error based sampled-data proportional-derivative(PD) type iterative learning controller is proposed for control systems with initial resetting error, input disturbance and output measurement noise in this *** proposed iterative learning controller is simple and effective. The first contribution in this paper is to prove the learning error convergence via a rigorous technical analysis. It is shown that the learning error will converge to a residual set if a forgetting factor is introduced in the controller. All the theoretical results are also shown by computer simulations. The second main contribution is to realize the iterative learning controller by a digital circuit using a field programmable gate array(FPGA) chip applied to repetitive position tracking control of direct current(DC) motors. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed current error based sampleddata iterative learning controller are demonstrated by the experiment results. Finally, the relationship between learning performance and design parameters are also discussed extensively.

Clean label food is a rising consumer trend in the food *** protein concentrate(MPC)and reduced-calcium milk protein concentrate(RCMPC)could serve as natural emulsifiers and increase the total protein content of ice cream *** objectives of this study were to determine and compare the effects of MPC and RCMPC on ice cream composition,mix viscosity,storage stability,meltdown rate,and texture.A base formulation with 3%non-fat dry milk(NFDM)and no added emulsifiers was set as the *** levels of MPC or RCMPC(each powder containing 85%protein)at 1%,2%,and 3%were incorporated by replacing equivalent amounts of NFDM and keeping other ingredients *** ice cream treatments were processed with a target overrun of 70%and hardened at−25℃in a blast *** of MPC or RCMPC at 1%,2%,and 3%corresponded to increases in protein content of ice cream by 15%,30%,and 45%,*** viscosity of the ice-cream mix increased with increasing levels of MPC or *** general,higher protein samples had slower meltdown rate and higher values of hardness and adhesiveness,but the trends were *** shrinkage in volume was observed in any ice cream stored at−25℃after 180 ***,an additional storage stability study revealed that the control showed significant shrinkage after 60 days(−6.5%±1.5%),90 days(−7.1%±1.8%),and 180 days(−7.9%±1.1%)in a typical household-style freezer at−13℃.MPC at 1%also showed significant shrinkage after 180 days,while samples with RCMPC at any levels showed no shrinkage at *** cream manufacturers may consider MPC and RCMPC natural alternatives to synthetic emulsifiers,with RCMPC being more effective than MPC in terms of ice cream storage stability.

Background: Departure decisions and behaviors of migratory birds at stopover sites are expected to maximize fit?ness by trade?offs among avoiding predators, optimizing refueling(energy) capacity, and matching other life?history events. We predict that species with different body sizes and migratory destinations will exhibit different behaviors when departing from the same stopover site. We also predict that with strong time constraint at the final pre?breed?ing stopover site, departure decisions may be less sensitive to exogenous factors, such as wind condition, compared to other stopover or nonbreeding ***: We recorded migratory departures of four shorebird species, i.e. Eurasian Curlew(Numenius arquata), Bar?tailed Godwit(Limosa lapponica), Great Knot(Calidris tenuirostris), and Grey Plover(Pluvialis squatarola), at Yaluji?ang Estuary Wetlands in china, a final pre?breeding stopover site in the northern Yellow Sea, from 2011 to 2014. We compared flock sizes, departure time and departure directions between species, and investigated the effects of tide and weather conditions(rain and ground wind speed and direction) on the departure decision of ***: We found that larger species departed in smaller flocks and were more variable in daily departure time. Departure trajectory of all four species appeared to be influenced by coastal topography. With the east–west coast?line and intertidal mudflat on the south, birds exhibited westward or eastward deflection from the shortest migra?tory routes. Bar?tailed Godwit was the only species that deviated to the southeast and did not climb over the land. Objective:To assess whether the cutaneous features in patients with dengue fever are associated with abnormal blood biochemistry,complications,and poor disease ***:Forty five patients with dengue fever were identified at a medical center in Kaohsiung,Taiwan,from September to November *** cases were exclusively caused by type 1 dengue *** were classified into two groups,based on the presence or absence of skin rash,and their rash was subclassified into maculopapular,morbilliform,and petechial *** symptoms,laboratory data,disease outcome,and complications were compared between the two ***:Thirty two patients with dengue fever developed skin rash(SP group,n=32) while the rest of 13 did not(SN group,n=13).The patient numbers in the maculopapular,morbilliform,and petechial group were 4,21,and 7,*** SP group was younger(P=0.001),experienced more pruritus(P=0.008) and more swollen palms/soles(P=0.015) than the SN ***,the SN group had greater genital mucosa involvement(P=0.008),higher platelet transfusion rate(P=0.003),and lower hemoglobin and hematocrit levels(P=0.030) than the SP *** with morbilliform lesions had a higher incidence of palm/sole swelling,less genital mucosal involvement,and a lower platelet transfusion rate than did patients with maculopapular or petechial ***:Cutaneous manifestations provide an important clue to dengue *** patients with dengue fever,those with skin rash tend to have itching and swelling of the palms/soles,however,those without skin rash tend to have more complications and poor disease outcomes.
