This paper re-examines Bagnold’s theorem of sediment transport. Different from the stream power defined by Bagnold, i.e., τoV, this study shows that the total load of sediment-laden flow, gt, is related to near bed energy dissipation rate, i.e., τou*’. An attempt is made to explain the empirical relation. The ratio (=k) of measured total load, gt, to the product of near bed velocity, u*’, and energy dissipation rate, τou*’, is analyzed. It is found that k is independent of the Rouse number, Z, if Z is greater than 2.6, but the coefficient k decreases with the increase of Z when Z < 2.6. An empirical relation between k and Z is developed. A systematic and thorough analysis of 1,458 sets of data collected from 16 rivers and canals confirms that the proposed formula can be used to compute the total load with accuracy.

This paper reports the pH-induced structural changes in the surface immobilized poly（L-lysine）（PLL）***-dimensional（2D） correlation analysis was applied to the Fourier transform infrared（FTIR）spectra of the surface-immobilized PLL film to examine the spectral changes induced by the alternations of the protonation state of the amino group in the side *** spectral changes in the FTIR spectra of the PLL film were observed between pH 7 and *** decrease in the protonation state of the amino group in the side chain induced spectral changes in the amino group as well as conformational changes in the alky]group in the side *** pH 1-8,the spectral changes in the amino and alkyl groups in the side chain occurred before those of the amide group in the main chain of the surface immobilized PLL film.

Spilled gallstones mimicking a retroperitoneal sarcoma following laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become a standard treatment of symptomatic gallstone disease. Although spilled gallstones are considered harmless, unretrieved gallstones can result in intra-abdominal abscess. We report a case of abscess formation due to spilled gallstones after laparoscopic cholecystectomy mimicking a retroperitoneal sarcoma on radiologic imaging. A 59-year-old male with a surgical history of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy complicated by gallstones spillage presented with a 1 mo history of constant right-sided abdominal pain and tenderness. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a retroperitoneal sarcoma at the sub-hepatic space. On open exploration a 5 cm × 5 cm retroperitoneal mass was excised. The mass contained purulent material and gallstones. Final pathology revealed abscess formation and foreign body granuloma. Vigilance concerning the possibility of lost gallstones during laparoscopic cholecystectomy is important. If possible, every spilled gallstone during surgery should be retrieved to prevent this rare complication.

The role of the thermal history of the precursor was studied for amorphous and crystalline calcium carbon- ate phases synthesized from calcium nitrate. The X-ray diffraction patterns of these phases are influenced by their annealing temperature of 0, 300, 400, and 500 ℃. However, the effect of the precursor thermal history on the X-ray diffraction pattern of the resulting calcium carbonate phase is negligible. Transmis- sion electron microscopy indicates that materials annealed at 400 ℃ consist of amorphous aggregates, irrespective of the precursor thermal history. The crystallite size of crystalline calcium carbonate is influ- enced by the precursor thermal history, and ranges from 23 to 26 rim. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements indicate that the annealing temperature plays an important role in determining the local electronic structure. The role of the thermal history of the precursor is also important for the resultinu electronic structure.

We investigated the role of metal atomization and solvent decomposition into reductive species and carbon clusters in the phase formation of transition-metal carbides(TMCs;namely,Co_(3)C,Fe_(3)C,TiC,and MoC)by pulsed laser ablation of Co,Fe,Ti,and Mo metals in *** interaction between carbon s-p-orbitals and metal d-orbitals causes a redistribution of valence structure through charge transfer,leading to the formation of surface defects as observed by X-ray photoelectron *** defects influence the evolved TMCs,making them effective for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions(HER and OER)in an alkaline ***_(3)C with more oxygen affinity promoted CoO(OH)intermediates,and the electrochemical surface oxidation to Co_(3)O_(4)was captured via in situ/operando electrochemical Raman probes,increasing the number of active sites for OER *** with more d-vacancies exhibits strong hydrogen binding,promoting HER kinetics,whereas Fe_(3)C and TiC with more defect states to trap charge carriers may hinder both OER and HER *** results show that the assembled membrane-less electrolyzer with Co_(3)C∥Co_(3)C and MoC∥MoC electrodes requires~2.01 and 1.99 V,respectively,to deliver a 10 mA cm−2 with excellent electrochemical and structural *** addition,the ascertained pulsed laser synthesis mechanism and unit-cell packing relations will open up sustainable pathways for obtaining highly stable electrocatalysts for electrolyzers.

BACKGROUND The human microRNA 375(MIR375)is significantly downregulated in human colorectal cancer(CRC)and we have previously shown that MIR375 is a CRCassociated *** metadherin(MTDH)is a candidate target gene of *** To investigate the interaction and function between MIR375 and MTDH in human *** A luciferase reporter system was used to confirm the effect of MIR375 on MTDH *** expression levels of MIR375 and the target genes were evaluated by quantitative RT-PCR(qRT-PCR),western blotting,or *** MTDH expression was found to be upregulated in human CRC tissues compared to that in healthy *** show that MIR375 regulates the expression of many genes involved in the MTDH-mediated signal transduction pathways[BRAF-MAPK and phosphatidylinositol-4,5-biphosphate-3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha(PIK3CA)-AKT]in CRC *** MTDH expression levels were found to inhibit NF-κB inhibitor alpha,which further upregulated NFKB1 and RELA expression in CRC *** Our findings suggest that suppressing MIR375 expression in CRC regulates cell proliferation and angiogenesis by increasing MTDH ***,MIR375 may be of therapeutic value in treating human CRC.

The neuroprotective function of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF) in ischemic stroke was rarely *** study aimed to investigate the effects of early treadmill exercise on recovery from ischemic stroke and to determine whether these effects are associated with the expression levels of MIF and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) in the ischemic area.A total of 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the ischemia and exercise group [middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)-Ex,n = 10),ischemia and sedentary group(MCAO-St,n = 10),sham-surgery and exercise group(Sham-Ex,n= 10),or sham-surgery and sedentary group(Sham-St,n = 10).The MCAO-Ex and MCAO-St groups were subjected to MCAO for 60 minutes,whereas the Sham-Ex and Sham-St groups were subjected to an identical operation without *** in the MCAO-Ex and Sham-Ex groups then ran on a treadmill for 30 minutes once a day for 5 consecutive *** reperfusion,the hanging time tested by the wire hang test was longer and the relative fractional anisotropy determined by MRI was higher in the peri-infarct region of the MCAO-Ex group compared with the MCAO-St *** expression levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region were upregulated in the MCAO-Ex *** MIF and BDNF levels were positively correlated with relative fractional anisotropy changes in the peri-infarct *** was no significant difference in the levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region between the Sham-Ex and Sham-St *** study demonstrated that early exercise(initiated 48 hours after the MCAO) could improve motor and neuronal recovery after ischemic ***,the increased levels of MIF and BDNF in the peri-infarct region(penumbra) may be one of the mechanisms of enhanced neurological function *** experiments were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee in Asan Medical Center in South Korea(2016-12-126).
