Contents of Fe, Mn and other elements in four ferromanganese crusts recovered from the central North Pacific are analyzed at high depth-resolution by electron microprobe for reconstructing factors controlling their deposition. Manganese (IV) in hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts is mainly supplied as colloidal precipitates from the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ), which concentrates high amounts of dissolved Mn (II). The iron is derived from carbonate dissolution and silicate particles of eolian dust. An increase in paleoproductivity during cooler climate would potentially lead to a decrease in Mn deposition due to enlargement of the OMZ which has a “temporary storage” effect for Mn. On the other hand, not affected by the OMZ, the iron entering the Fe-Mn crust would likely increase with the eolian dust input and surface productivity at glacial stages. As a result, the increasing Fe/Mn ratio should indicate a cooling climate. This is supported by the following observations. In the profile of the past 1 Ma, the variations of Fe/Mn ratio coincide with benthic oxygen isotope fluctuation in glacial-interglacial cycles. Three episodes with high Fe/Mn ratios, approximately at 2.6, 1.8 and 0.8 Ma, are detected within the past 3 Ma and coincide with major climate transitions and cooling events. The secular evolution pattern of Fe/Mn ratio in the Cenozoic is similar to the Pb isotope evolution which is mainly controlled by eolian dust and related to climate. The Fe/Mn evolution pattern is also broadly consistent with the global deep-sea oxygen isotope records. Therefore, Fe/Mn ratio recorded in the ferromanganese crusts may be a new proxy for climate change.

The Dongying Basin, Huimin Basin, and Zhanhua Basin constitute the Jiyang Depression in Shandong Province. They are major oil and gas exploring districts within the depression. Through reconstructions of the paleotemperature of the three basins facilitated with the chlorite geothermometry, the thermal history of the Paleogene prototype basin in Jiyang Depression and its geologic significance were explored. This study reveals that the Si^(4+) component in chlorites reduces gradually as its buried depth increases, while the AI~Ⅳ component increases accordingly. The chlorite type changes from silicon-rich diabantite to silicon-poor ferroamesite and prochlorite. The prochlorite in this district only appears in the deep buried depth, high temperature, and relatively old stratigraphies; while the diabantite appears in the shallower buried, low temperature, and newly formed strata; the ferroamesite exists in the conditions between prochlorite and diabantite formation. The diagenetic temperatures of the chlorites in these Paleogene basins are 171 — 2.8℃ for the Dongying Basin, 160—2.2. for the Huimin Basin, and 135—180℃ for the Zhanhua Basin. The differences of the chlorite diagenetic temperatures in the three basins were controlled by the duration time of the structural depressing processes. Higher temperature indicates longer depression time. The relationship between the chlorite diagenetic temperature and its buried depth indicates that the average paleogeothermal gradient is about 38.3℃ /km in the Paleogene prototype basin of Jiyang Depression. It was higher than the present geothermal gradient (2.—30℃/km). This phenomenon was attributed to the evolution of the structural dynamics in the depression basin.

A detailed microstructure analysis and LA-ICPMS U-Pb dating have been done for zir- cons of Weishan granite from Hunan Province, South china. The results indicate that the Weishan granite is a multistage batholith formed during the late Indosinian-early Yanshanian time. The intruded time of the late Indosinian granite is 2.1.0±1.6Ma and 2.5.7±1.9Ma (two samples), whereas that of the early Yanshanian granite is 187.4±3.5Ma and 184.5±5.1Ma (two samples). In combination with other geochronological data for Indosinian rocks of South china and the adjacent region, it is inferred that the late Indosinian granites of South china (especially Hunan Province) are probably formed under extension regime as a consequence of post-collision stress relaxation, which is a spontaneous response to intracontinental thickening attributed to the collision and extrusion of two Indosinian seams, namely Qinling-Dabie and Song Ma. Moreover, it is also deduced that the early Yanshanian granites of Hunan Province could not be directly related with the subduction of Paleo-Pacific plate towards Eurasian continent, and they are most likely derivation of the mid- or lower-crustal materials because of decompressional melting under the continuous extension setting.

Cenxi Permian basalts are the late Palaeozoic island-arc type basalts first found in South china. REE and trace element characteristics and distribution patterns show that this volcanic formation, which has been isotopically dated at 2.1 MaB.P. by the 39Ar/ 40Ar method, is of an active continental marginal island arc type, and that the tectonic environment at that time was an island-arc marginal sea or minor ocean basin related with the paleo-Tethyan tectonic belt in western Guangdong-eastern Guangxi.

The source mechanism of underground nuclear explosions is remarkably different from that of earthquakes in both spatial radiation pattern and source time-function (STF). Small underground nuclear explosions can be used as empirical Green’s functions (EGF) to isolate the source-time spectrum of a large suspected earthquake occurred in a Nuclear Test Site (target area) by the spectral division method. As this study shows, with high-quality data, the quotient spectrum can be transformed to the time domain, yielding the apparent far-field source-time function of the large suspected event. The relative source time-function (RSTF) of a nuclear ex-plosion is usually a simple pulse with a duration of about 1 s., while an earthquake’s is more complicated with a series of pulses and a longer duration. The RSTF can be used as a nice dis-criminant to distinguish the nature earthquakes from underground nuclear explosions in target areas.

In the eastern Nanling Range there exists the early Yanshanian syenite-granite assemblage. A representative example is the Pitou-Tabei complex composed of the Tabei syenite pluton and the Pitou syenogranite pluton in southern Jiangxi Province. U-Pb zircon dating yields ages of 188.6±2.2.Ma for the Tabei pluton and 186.3±1.1 Ma for the Pitou pluton. The Tabei syenite is characterized by relatively low SiO2.content (62.40% - 68.75%), high alkalis (K2.+Na2. = 10.56%-11.96%), low percent K2./Na2. ratios (0.56-0.93), metaluminous fea- ture (A/CNK = 0.80-1.00), enrichment in LILE (Rb, Ba, K) and HFSE (Th, U, Nb, Ta, Zr, and so on), weakly negative to positive Eu anomalies (δ Eu = 0.63-1.82., relatively low (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.70412.0.70543), and relatively high ε Nd(t) (3.14-3.52.. The Pitou syenogranite is charac- terized by high silicon content (SiO2.= 71.06%-76.2.%), relatively low alkalis (K2.+Na2. = 8.10%-9.80%), high percent K2./Na2. ratios (1.2.-1.94), metaluminous feature (A/CNK = 0.94-1.07), enrichment in Rb, Th (U), K, depletion in Ba, Nb, Ta, Sr, P , Zr, Ti, high ΣREE (av- eraging 451.03 μg/g), strong negative Eu anomalies (δ Eu = 0.2.-0.33), relatively high (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.70805-0.70912., and relatively low ε Nd( t ) (?5.35-?6.2.). The Tabei syenite and Pitou syenogranite both have the characteristics of A-type granites. The former is considered to be from the asthenosphere mantle, and the latter was the product of the crust-mantle mixture. They both were probably formed in a rifting setting.

This paper describes for the first time the cornute stylophorans (Echinodermata) in china. The new material came from the Guole Formation of the Furongian (Late Cambrian) in the Guole area of Jingxi, Guangxi Province, South china. These new cornute specimens are preserved in situ and found along with well-preserved trilobites and brachiopods. One new species, Phyllocystis jingxiensis sp. nov., is proposed to accommodate these unusual materials. The new species is defined by the small, heart-shaped theca with the frame composed of ten narrow, smooth and thick marginal plates, three adoral plates and distinctive zygal and aulacophore. Both supracentrals and infracentrals are polygonal-outlined. The marginal plate M1' on the inferior face extends posteriorly to form zygal that possesses a broadened proximal end and the proximal portion joining with the con{2.ction between M4 and M5 on the inferior face. Aulacophore comprises ten segments at its proximal part and is conical at the middle part (named stylocone). Its distal portion is rather long and bears conspicuous ambulacrum grooves. Tectals are horizontally arranged on superior face and obliquely arranged on inferior face. Both cothurnopore and anal pyramid are vaguely seen on the right anterior corner and the extremity of theca's superior face.
